In the song "It Was a Very Good Year," the key moments from a man's life flash in front of us like scenes in a movie, organized like vintages of wine. Ervin Drake, wrote the words and music. He wrote the song in about 10 minutes -- although he had been mulling over the concept of life as wine for some time. Gordon Jenkins, conducting here provides a gorgeous arrangement. The song won Grammys in 1966 for both Sinatra and Jenkins. My favorite Sinatra recording. It is Iconic in lyric, music and of course performance by Mr. Sinatra. Absolutely beautiful.

Was Gordy Jenkins conducting? He was like a tic-tac man at the races.....yet it was the whole package of the song, the arrangement, the top class musicians, and the one and only man himself Francis Albert Sinatra ,altogether making a dramatic vignette of a song of quiet introspection made possible by a singer's onstage magnificence transported to the recording studio.Any up and coming singers today?......follow that and just sigh with your impotence!

Tony Soprano and Frankie are on the Stugots drinking Martinis telling Sammy Davis to keep the F*****in thing straight.

Songs like this were America's lieder and they have outlived the culture from which they emerged.
As Benny Green said, no one is likely to write songs like this again because the music culture has changed.
