  • As my custom titanium bike frame is being fabricated, let's take a look at the new wheels that hopefully will insure I can clear my target bike weight. Not only is it my lightest wheels yet, but it's also the cheapest carbon wheels I've bought this far...

    My cycling journey was very similar: carbon (rim then disc), Ti (disc then rim), steel (disc then rim), vintage steel rim. Steel is a very nice place to be. Vintage steel and modern steel, can be very svelte compared to carbon, especially modern carbon, visually and ride feel.

    Exciting to see a new pair of wheels, and with Carbon TI Hubs non the less! I have a pair and I love them, but I must say out of the box the hub's ratchet does make themselves known on group rides...
    I would love to see a video on how to make the ratchet silent, and if I know you well enough, I am certain you may already be looking into ways of silencing them!

    Very light and a nice ride quality, weigh 240&245 gr.s on my scale.
    I like the fact that at 65-70 psi on a 19 mm inner width rim they measure 27.5 mm, my ti frame only has room for 28 max, so this is a very good size for me.

    Galfer disks are great for almost everything but racing and long and twisty European descents. They chew brand new L05 pads before the week is over. Despite their flimsy look the Centerlock versions didnt warp on me though. RT-CL800 and the previous Dura-Ace\Ultegra\XTR generations are the best for consistency.

    Absolutely love my Carbon Ti hubs. Weight is great, sure, but the bearings are just amazing. They contactless seals and I feel they work. Not even ceramic but spin as good or better than customers hubs with ceramic bearings installed.
    Really like my Galfer discs as well. Super light rotors and a lot cheaper. Very well made too, they come from motorcycles so gotta be good right?
    I would love to know how you get on with these rims. Considering these for my gravel wheels but wanna know how they hold up over time. Curious about how they ride on the road too.

    Thanks - Fun Intro, as usual.👌(... Don't we all love our tables? ;P ...)
    Tires - When weight above width, plus they roll just soooo fine:
    RenéHerse 700C x 28 Chinook Pass, extralight casing 225g. (RH weight dates are rather exact in my experience.)
    or maxing out your Ti frameset - 700C x 32 Stampede Pass, 254g.
    But since you know your Bon Jon Pass and Panaracer, this won't be news for you.
    Btw: Tubeless or superlight TPU tubes?

  • @josh33172
    @josh33172 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I know it would have ended up being slightly heavier, but the Challenge Criterium 700x27 come in at around 255. I feel like the extra 30g is worth the ride quality of the Challenge tires...to the point that I don't know if you'd notice 1mm for a faster more comfortable tire. I know its not exactly "slayer of grams" but then you also get the beautiful tan sidewall.
    Also, the Galfers are the way to go. So much better braking over Shimano rotors.

    For my lightweight Endurance Ti bike; I chose V brake rim brakes, the shorter TRP CX 8.4’s work well on my Vision KOM rims and Campag record levers. Finding a “cross” V brake fork and using 32mm Clement (Donnely’s) with TPU tubes, could go bigger yet it is Plush and balanced.

  • @pmcmpc
    @pmcmpc ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Loved the intro. Probably your best. Take care with those super short expanders tho ...
    Re: Extralite Hyper spokes ... I assume those are Alpina Hyperlites? If so, I'm heavier than you and use them on pretty rough gravel descents. Had no issue. But then I'm on fairly deep rims, laced to CarbonTis ... I guess they'd be much more likely to break on a super shallow rim due to the additional flex and forces, and maybe also more so on Extralites due to the 3x lacing.
    Re: the Galfers. I gave up ... they warp like crazy. Fade also way worse than XTR / new DA / Hope etc.

    When ppl quote weight for disc wheels it needs to include rotor weight. Rotors are like rim brake tracks on rim brake wheels. They're the breaking surface of the wheel.

    • @AlexLPs99
      @AlexLPs99 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure, but different rotors have different weights, so isn’t it easier to separate them from the wheels then?
      For my part, I like to know how much the wheels themselves weigh, because one might apply different rotors to them, so it makes the comparison between wheelsets simpler
