  • How to Protect Furniture During a Move - How to Professionally Protect Sofas and Couches When Moving!
In this video Sean teaches you how to professionally pad, wrap, and protect your couches and sofas when moving. You will need three tools for this job. The tools include five moving pads, two medium rubber bands, two small rubber bands, and plastic wrap. Links to all of those tools can be found listed in the discretion below. To protect the couch first use four moving pads to pad wrap the couch. Next, use the rubber bands to secure the pads in place. Finally, use the plastic wrap to wrap the couch. The plastic wrap will hold everything in place and also keep the couch protected against dirt and liquids. This was a very brief overview of the video, so please watch it for detailed instructions.

Outstanding presentation!!!! My 90" LEATHER couch is going in to a pod for transport and 3 months of storage in a climate controlled facility. Could you provide a link to the paper pads I should use for the first layer? What materials (paper, plastic wrap, blankets) and in what order for leather? Also, what orientation do you recommend it be placed in the pod (ie can it be on its back or just on the legs? Once in container/truck, what is a safe amount/type of other items (if any) to pack on top of a sofa?

This is a fantastic question! You're 90 inch leather sofa is on the larger side, so being placed in the "POD" makes it difficult to load it correctly. Typically sofas and couches are loaded standing up with the knees facing into the load and the back facing out. The legs should be touching the wall of the truck. This creates a gap in which you can load items around the sofa. Typically we will have two sofas during a move. One is placed on the left side of the truck and one on the right side of the truck, legs to the walls. They should be standing up with their backs facing away from the load. You'll be left with a gap, fill in between with washers, dryers, or refrigerators. Excess space can be filled with smaller items that will not puncture or damage the sofa. You can load on top of the sofas with other OS (overstuffed) furniture, and fill in spaces as necessary. This is how couches and sofas are moved by professional movers. Sofas are okay like this for short period of time, such as during a point to point move, but should not be stored in this way for longer than a week or two at the most.
We've been trying to work on a video explaining this process. This process is much easier explained in video format. It's really something you need to see to understand. As for storing it at a pod for 3 months, you run the risk of damage no matter what you do. Sofas are not meant to be on their side for that length of time, and they're also not to meant to have things loaded on top of them for that length of time. We have a storage facility of our own, and when sofas are brought into our storage facility they are placed onto sofa racks. This keeps them on their feet, air is able to circulate around them, and nothing gets stacked on top of sofas. This ensures no damage. I realize you have a different situation all together. You just have to realize that you run the possible risk of damage by leaving a sofa stacked in a POD for 3 months in an unknown involvement.
As for how to wrap and protect your leather sofa for a long period of time in storage, It depends upon the region that you will be storing the sofa in. Not all climate controlled storage facilities are made the same. You have to ask yourself these questions; is it humid in my area? Is it a moist environment? Is it a hot environment? Is the facility only heated or is it air conditioned as well? The main thing you want to make sure is that paper pads, plastic wrap, or pads do not stick to the leather and leave a residue. Making sure the sofa can breathe will prevent this. Leather needs to breathe or it will sweat. The sweat will cause moisture to build up and untimely cause the protective material to stick to the sofa. By leaving the sofa bottom open and free of stretch wrap, you will be able to allow air to circulate. This will help reduce moisture in humid areas. For the reasons I've given you above, I'm going to refrain from giving you advice on how to wrap your leather sofa in storage. I don't know where you live or where you plan to store this. For those reasons I cannot give you proper advice. I can only say what we do in our area to protect sofas in storage.
Finally, the paper pads you talked about are typically used for overseas shipments. They are used in lieu of traditional moving pads because the movers will not be getting their pads back when a shipment is sent across the world. You can use paper pads on leather no problem at all. It is the same process as we've shown in this video except, replace the moving pads with paper pads and do not wrap the bottom of the sofa with stretch wrap.

I realize this was a very long answer to your question, but the moving industry is not as simple as some people think. It takes a lot of hard work, education, and experience to ensure the safety of furniture during a move. Through our channel we are attempting to educate individuals on professional moving techniques. We are also trying to add transparency to the moving industry. Thank you for watching!

That's a great option for some people. However, if you spend several thousand dollars on a couch it's much more economical to protect the one you already have. Taking the time to professionally protect a couch will save you money in the long run and give you peace of mind that it will be moved without being damaged.
