Where's The Simpsons Hit and Run? It's easily one of the most memorable Simpsons games, but for some reason we all remember it as SIGNIFICANTLY better than it was. In fact it feels like a laggy, bug-filled, unfinished science project made by a six year old who just learned how to tie their own shoes.
Games that should be on this list: I'm Going In - controls would be bad today, Red Alert 1 and 2 - omg those pixels, StarCraft 1 and WarCraft 1 and 2 - not as good as WarCraft 3 and StarCraft 2

I amused me greatly that Jane went full eldritch horror, but I do remember how weird and bizarre those controllers felt, so it kinda makes sense. Me and my friends joked that they were designed for people with 3 hands. Although I do have to wonder if the overall shape would be more ergonomic for a race of beings who have dozens of tentacles.
It was some fool breaking there N64 controller that released Jane to begin with!
So when Ellen is drawing Pikachu she is actually drawing the ones from Pokemon Red and Blue, it all makes sense now :P

It's been a long time since I last played any Pokémon. Does it make a difference in the game if you catch a male or a female? Or maybe you can breed if you have both?
Ironically, some of these games are still among the most popular in speedrunning.

And the double irony would be that people love speed running them so much because they are so boring to actually play as intended so they want to get them over with as fast as possible.

@@rizkyanandita8227 Rizky Anandita PONYBOYonline's example is an example of irony (in one instance though, not doubly as they suggested) as there is a situational/comedic irony to the idea that speedrunning games is due to them being boring to play.
Otherwise nothing about the link between the games mentioned in the video and speedrunning really suggests irony. It's not ironic that the games are popular with speedrunners, thats just a coincidence. If the video was 'games that you never want to play again because they're so slow' then that might be ironic

@@LithiaSinclair I revisited Blue (as that was my first introduction to the series). Granted, the lack of running shoes was kind of annoying but I still enjoyed the game.
I still replay red & blue on a regular basis & actually prefer them to the newer genrerations

It's a QR code. It goes to an app that sends your phone's GPS data to Jane - and her earthquake machine in case you don't comply with her demands.
I just played through the original Tomb Raider. Rough around the edges sure, but still playable.
Mac Schlosser same, i thought it was even better because it forces you to slow down and think. chess not checkers like modern games

The part when you're debating whether to open the door to release the bear, only for it to open a trap door and fall into the water below, used to get me every time.

Jack Burton Golden Eye was a bit harder to get used to again. Tony Hawk much easier.
@@pinut187 My brain is hard wired to left hand movement and right hand aiming. The best Goldeneye config was opposite that.

I imagine with the upcoming Life is Strange 2 it will only go more downhill from here. He may be already lost...and we will have to accept that
In the Tomb Raider games as a kid I never played the levels. I would just explore the mansion, and trap the butler in the freezer, and jump off the roof to my death. 😎
Butler and mansion were in Tomb Raider 2. The first game didn't even have them, just dropped you into the game.

The mansion was in the first game but you only had access to indoor rooms and there was no butler. There's a clip of the mansion in TR1 at 0:21 .
I would just go swimming and then run around the mansion...that was the total extent of my tomb raider playing experience

I still regularly go back and play the older Pokemon games. Gives me that good hit of nostalgia.

yeah but gen 1 Pokemon isn't the actual first gen, they screwed up. they did a quick google search and saw gen 1 and said yes this must be first... but no Pokemon red and Pokemon blue came out in 1998, Pokemon green came out in 1996 they missed the gen 0 game. probably because there was never an English release they figured screw it not worth mentioning.

@@stonferen584 Actually Pokemon Green did popularize it, with Pokemon Red which both came out on the same day in Japan in 1996. Those two games were extremely popular in Japan and they lead to everything else including the international versions Blue and Red which, as @Funkopedia said, are virtually identical apart from the language and cultural translations.
Let's be honest, the reason we don't play the original pokemon games is that most of the cartridges can't hold saves anymore. It was a sad day when I learned this.
You might be able to fix it with a new battery. Worked for my copy of Silver.
@@jonathandavies1716 yeah, that won't always fix it obviously, but it's the problem more often than not! definitely worth a try, if you can get your hands on a battery (you can usually find them online for a couple bucks) and some solder to put it in with!

If you have a "new" 3ds, 3ds xl, or 2ds xl you can get any gameboy or gameboy color pokemon game digitally. Just not on the regular 2ds.
Original pokemon isn't bad because of the sprite (though it doesn't do it any favors) it's bad because no run button, not key item pocket, and manual box switching.
I can't play any of the old games since discovering you can play at double speed or higher on an emulator. They're all so slow in hindsight.
you forgot all the weird glitches, wrong coding (like psychic being immun to ghost instead of ghost being super effective), broken move conditions (like wrap or rage), no physical/special split, broken crit chances, ...
gen 1 was a mess. a beatiful mess.
as well as the endless amount of glitches, the lack of many mechanics which are hard to go back to not having ie abilities, natures, no physical/special split and worst of all, feraligatr didn't exist!
Ah, I'm not too spoiled by all the new games. I still like the OG Red and Green. It may be missing things that we now have, but it's a call back to 'simpler' times, when computers didn't control everything, and life could end by dysentery at anytime.
I'd still play the crap out of Pokemon Red.
With Goldeneye, you can still play it decently if you use “legacy” on modern games. Changing the stick layout from default to legacy, switches the turning and strafing from one stick to the other; which is the most similar to Goldeneye. I’ve been using legacy on all modern games that support it, and can switch between default and legacy on a dime. It takes practice, but anyone can do it.

Old games should be played forever. I still go back and play classic tomb raider, tony hawk, and donkey kong country all the time. They shouldnt just be left on the shelf and "remembered fondly"
If you liked that game, dust it off and play it again. And they are ABSOLUTELY 100% still fun to play!
I think they mean if you played for the first time they might be a bit clunky for new players compared to their sequels. (GTA III to GTA V, THPS1 to THPS3 etc)
Dude that reaction, whilst well intended you've implied they will give the enjoyment of a modern game which isn't true imo. I love GTA 3 & Tony Hawk (better than any Skate) and I'd agree they are still good but that's because they are arguably the most refined of these choices which impede your nostalgia the least, making them easier to slip back to from modern games. What a gamer really wants is challenge that's not from the controls or the graphics aka refinement (Not mechanic choices like no map as that could be conceived as fair difficulty.
Most of the rest require you recreate playstyles to conquer iffy controls/ eye bleeding graphics. Ultimately that's unfair difficulty which will probably taint the memories of these games. That's my opinion (No swearing needed) but to each their own.
@@rossisnoble7049 Tomb Raider,Goldeneye,Metroid,GTA3 etc. are definitely more fun than many of the games that come out today,though they are definitely designed differently, and Tony Hawk is a good game to start with in the series and can be beaten in just a couple hours fully,Tony Hawk 2 -4 are much better and much more challenging though the simple design of 1 is fun as a warmup or start to the series. Controls that take skill to master and work well once you do are a legitimate form of challenge,Tomb Raider actually has really precise controls compared to a lot of 3d games at the time,once you get used to the animations and timing and realize it is working on a grid system like Prince of Persia.They don't make FPS games based on exploring a level like Goldeneye anymore,and the way the shooting works with the animations makes it still feel good,emulators can make it run at a better fps if the slowdown bothers you.
@@aaronhackett6626 I know what they mean, and it's still false. I recently played the original Ghost Recon, which is incredibly clunky and hard to look at .. but it was still a ton of fun to play and one of the more interesting games I've played this year.
Players should not be turned away from old classics.
@Nick930 I love retro games as well, even if they look as good as a punch to the stomach feels lol. But in my opinion a lot of the games on the list are well, lacking compared to their sequels. Goldeneye, while still a classic and one of the most influential games ever, isn’t as good as its spirtual successor, Perfect Dark. My same thoughts with Pokemon Red and Blue compared to Pokemon Gold and Silver, GTA III compared to GTA: San Andreas. Not saying those are bad far from it, just their sequels greatly outshine them.

while it's not my fave (vice city takes that title) I also love it and go back to quite often. I prefer it over 4 and 5(as much as I loved gta 5 it just seemed a bit overhyped at the time)

I know right? I revisit all the sixth gen era GTA games every year twice each and have a lot of fun with them every time, but I haven't felt like touching GTA 5 again once I finished the story mode.
I can’t even recall how many times I’ve gone back to Tony Hawk Pro Skater and beaten it. Incredible replay ability.

See, Zelda for NES still controls well and isn't too hard to jump back to after playing later entries in the series. Hence why it's not mixed in with all of these games that can't say the same.
I find it way more playable than say, Metroid or Kid Icarus. That being said, with a guide. Zelda is actually possible for me. Metroid and Kid Icarus, just no.
I still find OG Zelda playable.
Lara was a pain to control even back in the day. I couldn't even get past the first level without getting killed by bats.
...Then again, maybe I was just bad at video games.

There was a remake to, I think Tomb Raider Anniversary, and the reboot is great by the way
... We all understand. After all, TR1 Lara does have the habit of overkilling (just to clarify: classic TR does auto-aiming, and in TR1, sometimes Lara aims at one enemy and just ... continues on aiming at that enemy, even when the said enemy is offscreen/dead. Being ambushed by multiple enemies is ... hard).
If you think the Red and Blue sprites look bad, check out the original sprites from Pokemon Green.
Also I think Pokemon is still totally playable but to each their own. I personally love tubby Pikachu.
I actually like the sprites in Red and Blue, it's the fact that they don't explain what any of the pokemon moves do as you level up that is the real problem.

They're definitely still playable. I actually very recently charged my old Gameboy SP up and booted up Pokemon Crystal for the first time in a decade atleast, I haven't been able to put it down since!
Old style pokemon looked like biologist's sketches of actual wild creatures. Modern pokemon look like mascot characters.
I forget that Red and Blue were black and white as I played them on the SNES attachment, where you play Gameboy games on the console. You can add colors to the game, though it's limited.
Weird that this came up today. I completed THPS1 tonight and enjoyed the hell out of it.
The list was fine, but really, is “Pokémon look weird” the best you could come up with for Red and Blue? Not the countless bugs with the type system, the slow gameplay, the fact that some types were really unbalanced, the glitch where opponents would spam moves that don’t do damage just because they’re a type that would be super effective, the potential for Missingno to corrupt the cart permanently. Nope. Geodude’s face is weird

It was the only one on the list I disagreed with them on. That being said, they were only talking about red and blue. From that perspective I guess I can agree that if I’m going to play one of the originals, it might as well be yellow.

@@capnkilgz I honestly never played Yellow till a couple years ago. I grew up with Blue, my wife played Yellow, and after seeing her play Yellow I can't really think of any reason to go back. I'm not an expert on either game but I think Yellow is a strictly better upgrade.
Pokemon RB. Is still very playable. Its a handheld so the graphics can suck. And yeah it there was a lot of bugs. But nothing that stops u from getti ng the badges and beatinf the e4

@@Gooner333333333 i still play Pokemon blue, and a play the first Pokemon game Pokemon green, been looking for a good android rom for blue but they all seem a bit buggy... still emerald was and still is my favorite.
The secret to low poly count graphics is to view them on era appropriate crt display of the smallest possible size. Then you won't be complaining about the game at the very least.
Or on a Pi with the right filters applied (smoothing and scanlines).

As someone who never owned an N64 and only played it much later in life, I actually loved how Goldeneye controlled and how the old controller feels. Goofy as hell, but it almost, ALMOST, feels like shooting an actual gun. No idea why I feel that way, but damn it, I do 😂
I mean... wierd sprites are the least of the problems of the unbalanced Pokemon Red and Blue. No game where a slowbro with amnesia is a powerhouse should be allowed.

The arcade version may look outdated but the gameplay still has something good in it - if it was to talk about early polygon-based games, Star Wing/Starfox is a much better (and more known) example.

I miss the original Xbox 1st controller. Only due to the fact that I have saquatch hands and that was the only controller that fit comfortably in my hands. Lol
@@kjw51687 It always goes with when you got into gaming, I was a teenager when the NES and Master System was released(and had played the Atari, Intellivision and Colecovision before them), so I got used to those small controllers, everything after that wasn't an issue for me.

I see alot of people talking about they can still play these games. Im pretty sure they mean it like these games may not live up to our nostalgia so its best to leave them in our memories for various reasons.

I've played through three of these in the past year. I guess I'm stuck in the past but I'm good with it.
GTA VC was my favorite. That soundtrack, stealing a car, putting in cheat codes, going on a rampage, dying, over and over again without playing a single mission. Good times

You could have really simplified the title for this one by calling it "Good Games That Feel Dated Now"
Oversoul Gaming the only ones I think no one should play are golden eye(the controller) and GTA3(bad story in comparison to the rest of the series)
I’d add shenmue to that list because of it’s innovative ideas that where implemented better latter, had better stories(which is to say better than awful) and did have you waiting for things to happen.
Well several of these it was more about being the popular game rather than the only game at the time doing that kind of thing just because they got enough elements right enough that people liked it. Some of them weren't even the first to do those kinds of things as claimed. Kingsfield for example was doing a 3d environment stuff from a first person perspective for example but it was firmly in the RPG genre but it also predates Tomb Raider by over a year. People also forget that back in the day Tomb Raider was seen as primarily a PC game even though it was made available to consoles. Controls to work on the consoles were secondary in thought structure to the PC controls.

I recently played through Need for Speed: Underground for the first time. Always heard it was a great game. It's alright, but where are the lootboxes with upgrade cards? I didn't play Daggerfall as a kid. If I did, I'm sure I would agree it's not as good as remembered.
Though, as someone who did go backwards in time and play them all; Daggerfall is a great old school dungeon crawler, if you like those kind of games.
I don't think Redguard was regarded as decent even in its own time. Morrowind would have deserved a place on this list, breaking ground for RPGs on Xbox and saving Bethesda from a financially difficult spot, but the previous games never achieved anywhere near the same legendary status or success as the entries showed. Oblivion was probably the jump that spoiled us all forever.

Slash on Persian. IIRC, crit chance was a factor of speed in the first game, so stupid high speed meant high chance to crit anyway, add in Slash's higher than normal chance and you'd basically perma-crit with that combo.
But yeah, Psychic was the OP type, part due to the broken Special stat and part due to the fact its two weaknesses, Ghost and Bug, hads no decent moves. If you could get Alakazam, you could sweep pretty much everything.
tpbloomfield actually Ghost had no effect on Psychic back then. Because of glitches. There are a LOT of those in the old games.
...Which is why I'm going to replay them. Not for nostalgia, but to have fun with the glitches. Makes it a totally different experience.
Winged Mirage gets it. If you haven't exploited the game to have a team of super cool Pokemon and steamrolled Sabrina by critting her Pokemon with a Jolteon or something every hit, you haven't really experienced Gen 1.

I played the game normally for a while, but it's so bland compared to later entries. The move sets actually suffer the most, with a very poor selection and Pokémon learning very little via level up. So many of my Pokémon had Tackle or other weak moves simply because there was little to replace them with.
I do think, however, that this is actually a great game to start on. With the least amount of Pokémon, types, and moves, it makes it simpler and easier to understand, and isn't too hard or long. And the games only get better from there :)
Hearing gameplay audio from Goldeneye really took me back. Keep up the killer content chums!
The way I see it, if you haven't played them in a while, then it's great to jump back and experience these games (which are usually the start of their respective franchises) from the start and make your way up. But if you play a more modern game and then go back, then yeah you're going to find a lot to be desired.
I've been going back to Goldeneye every couple years since it was initially released-- and it's still very fun, with incredible replay value.
That Virtua Racing segment gives me an idea for Mike's next Challenge of the Week.

I played Goldeneye 007 quite recently, first time actually playing through the whole first difficulty. I enjoyed it more than most current shooters, and find the N64 controller fairly comfortable, haha.

I remember the original Might and Magic game was made of about 20 overworld and countless dungeon maps, each 16x16. The game came with a special pad of paper with a grid for you to draw your own maps on.

I've been playing the first Legend of Zelda game without a manual, by drawing out each screen and using labels and arrows to show how each screen connects. A lot of people hate how it doesn't have a propper mini-map but i've been feeling like a true adventurer. I did the same thing for the Lost Woods in Ocarina of Time when I was a kid. I love the feeling of figuring the map out on my own.

Doom Guy, Link, Red or any MC in a Pokemon title, Chrono, Joker for P5, countless others from JRPG titles, Morgan from Half Life, First two MC from the Bioshock series. And I could go on and on. And I also have no idea how you or anyone can identify with him. Unless your a psychopath who enjoys murdering people and doing a bunch of other criminal acts. Not saying you can't like him but can't argue that he's a good character at all.
C'mon guys, silent protagonist, despite the occasional in-game joke about "this guy doesn't say much" was really video game shorthand for "there's probably some dialogue here, the player can fill it in." Claude isn't literally a mute murderer. It just means you have to do the work to role play his reaction. It also means he's never obnoxiously annoying, like every single other character. That's why we relate to silent protagonists more.

Phlebas most of the games on the list I still play. 007 could use a remake but if you played the n64 then it’s still playable and great mechanics for its time.

RE actually plays surprisingly well, it only takes little bit to get used to the tank controls and once you do you're golden.
Mr. Futago That is true, but from an artistic standpoint, it hasn't aged all that fluidly. RE2 and RE3 are still perfectly playable today, but the first, not so much. You're just better off with the remake now.

I’m going to be honest, I much prefer Golden Eye/Perfect Dark single control stick over modern dual stick systems. That might just be a side effect of being left handed, so being asked to aim with my right thumb means I can’t hit anything...

Just map the buttons to a xbox or ps controller. Z trigger is right trigger and right stick is camera buttons leaving everything else as it was. Also there is an extensive mod called Goldfinger 64 which recreates the whole Goldfinger movie and is well worth a play.

Any time anyone calls out GoldenEye for this "lack of modern features", I love to point out the fact that the game actually did have a dual analog mode, and in fact it was the only way I used to play the game unless I was playing multiplayer because the best way to speed run was using the control modes that used dual analog.
And yes dual analog meant that you had to use two separate controllers one in each hand, but once you got used to it it really worked.

GTA 1 is the sort of 2D one right? The driving in that is horrendous. Rockstar driving is still bad (GTA IV, LA Noire etc.) but it's so much better

I'd agree with the exception of going back to Kanto in HG/SS. Making Red tougher is fine, as he's a bonus boss, but I think the level gap of the trainers/gym leaders shifted too much between the original and remake.
I agree. Im not even a huge pokemon fan. Didn't watch the show much, but I still love red/blue and play it on my phone all the time. One of the best rpgs ever made.

+IcyLucario Whether a game is a broken mess or not, if it's fun it's fun. I used to be a major critic of Gen 1 Pokemon but over the past 3 or 4 years I've come to really enjoy it, there's a lot of charm to it and despite being messes the games are fun to play. Exploiting glitches to get yourself things like Rhyhorn or Chansey early on, duplicating your TMs and just messing around with the sort of things you can do makes for a fun, different experience to other Pokemon games.
And anything is better then the current state of Pokemon games, to be fair.

I liked that Claude was a silent protagonist. It made him a blank slate that you could easily plaster any backstory over. There wasn't a lot of roleplay opportunities in GTA 3, but any boost to immersion was welcome.
