The American Motors Corporation was known for building reliable, lower-priced cars targeted towards families and those seeking basic transportation. But when you combine a lightweight economy car with a potent V8, you have the recipe for an outstanding performer. This was the case with the 1969 Hurst SC/Rambler, a car built in conjunction with Hurst Performance to be a drag strip terror and look cool doing it! The SC/Rambler boasted a 315 HP 390 cube V8, a T10 4-speed, 3.54:1 gears, and other performance tricks like a complete lack of options, subframe connectors, rolled fender lips, staggered shocks, and Thrush mufflers. This little Super Car rocked and advertised 14.2 in the quarter @ 100+ mph, all for less than $3000.00. Quite a package.

I was working at the local AMC dealership in high school when one of these showed up on the tiny showroom floor. Days earlier, this car was just a grocery-getter and nothing more. This thing was a rocket, pure and simple. Those were some crazy times; glad to have been there. Later, AMC came out with a Rebel in the same trim and performance package.
Still amazes and amuses me that when the Rambler Boys showed up it still pisses off the guys from the big three. When this car got an actual competitive carberator on it, it took something really special to reel it in. The 390 with even minor mods was such a beast! Wanna make America great again?? Well here u are...

Thank you, interestingly in May 1970, I passed BUYING, on 70 Challenger RT/ * Loaded/4 speed/ MAgnum/SE, SUPER LOADED/ triple Green (?), buying Coronet500 / Loaded (*except a/ C)/383/ 330H/4 BBL @+3100*** full Delivered price, **My first new car Buy.. Anyhow, the , SYRACUSE INDIANA, Dodge/ AMC Dealer was next Door to Pharmacy where I worked after GRADUATING, ETC. They had a plethora of cars through trying to sell , ......seems like there were a few AMC/ Dodge Dealers/ transfers , and arrangements around to 1970, etc.interestingly,they had one or more, *RED,WHITE blue / AMC Rebel on display in 1969-70? ..Have a Memory of my 70 CORONET had no Window Sticker , also!! Ps, frankly I was not much interested in buying the 1970 SUPERBIRD , or the TRICOLOR AMC”s in those days: to dramatic ( & Plymouth to long,etc)......
The SC / Ramblers DID have a cabin heater. I had one. Bought it when I returned from vietnam where I was a Huey pilot. Best and most fun car I ever owned, ...and I've owned plenty in my 62 years of driving. Thank You for calling out great memories.

THanks for your service. Still get blown away at documentaries at what you guys went through...the show on Tubi around tunnel rats was beyond intense. No wonder so many had ptsd how could one not?

In 1969 my dad and grandfather (who passed a year later) picked up a gold 1969 Rambler in East Hanover, NJ. No air or radio, and a bulb on the floor for squirting fluid onto the windshield. The wipers changed speed with acceleration. Straight six that even a newbie like me could do simple work on. $1999. I drove it from 1976 until I passed it off to my younger brother in 1981. Put shag carpeting and a Pioneer cassette deck/radio in it. It was a beauty. My dad cried when they finally hauled it away many years later - one of the few times he ever did. I remember one of these Scrambers screaming right next to us as we picked up the car. LOUD! Quite an impression on this 10 year old.

An AWESOME car of the ERA, Low price, cool look, faster than many others. Always liked the Dashboard and instrument cluster more than Chevy.

my Dad test one, mashed the pedal and I was pinned in the seat and it was up to 100mph in a blink.
I think the very first image of a car i saved on my harddrive was this tiny 300x400 image of a black Rambler. I am not american and know very little of actual cars, but this thing always spoke to me somehow. The small, barebones, lightweight and almost "cute" look and power always spoke to me. 'Rambler' is also a really fucking cool name.
I prefer the b scheme.
Enjoyed this video - it was fun to see something different! I'm old enough to remember a lot of Ramblers, but not many cool rides like the Hurst Scrambler or the AMX!

@@davidstella847 Nobody really knows for sure which one was the fastest. I know the quickest car tested by a magazine in 1970 was a Hemi Cuda with a 4 speed and 3.55 gears. It ran a 13.10 1/4 mile. Not sure about 1969 though. But you can't really go by those magazine tests. Many of those test cars sent to different magazines were modified first by the manufacturer to perform better than a regular stock version would

I'll never forget driving past the Marshall AMC/Rambler Dealership and seeing one of these parked right out in front, on the concrete and the sidewalk. I stopped in and looked at it, needless to say, the Salesman greeted me and said I could trade my '69 Z/28 in on it but I couldn't bring myself to do it. The car was sharp but I kept mine and just admired the "SC Rambler". Thanks for sharing this video with us, I really enjoyed it.
Had a 70 javelin when I was 18. Back in the early 80’s. 390 t10 4 speed, 3.54 twin grip. Prostitute red black bucket interior. 10k miles on it. Still sitting on original tires. Man what a car. A torque monster and damn quick. Sold it for $1500 when I enlisted in the military to a guy who had a couple AMX’s. Love to see it today.

i loved sitting by dad up front as he'd open it up from many a light dusting whatever was beside him
my eldest brother was given the keys and once he blew the shift taking off in 3rd instead of 1st but....
that sc/rambler didn't stall or hesitate and laid rubber while the front end was trying to lift

Was never a big AMC fan but this is definitely an awesome car. Sounds great too. The Rebel Machine and Hornet S/C 360s we're pretty cool too

The only AMC I ever had was in 85 Eagle station wagon. It was an awesome car. I regret ever getting rid of it. MC was an absolute American version of fortitude and efficiency and power my goodness they were awesome. I wish they were still in existence by all means they should be
In 1977 I bought and was the third owner of an SC Rambler. It had been in a bad hail storm, all over the hood, roof and trunk was large marble size dents. I had a friend who did great body work on the side. He looked at it and just shook his head as he would not touch it. I then thought, long term restoration. I stored it in a neighbors garage, took the seats out to have them recovered. A year went by and they still weren't done. The guy had been in drugs and walked away from the shop, I went to reclaim the seats and everything was gone. I could not find the seats. 1980 I got married, had a house built. 1982 we started a family, by 1988 we now had 4 sons and the car still sat. A friend I knew had a brother that wanted an SC Rambler. I struck a deal to get rid of it for $700.00, with no seats. We worked all day digging it out of storage, winched it onto a trailer, watched him drive off to Detroit. He said he would send some pictures when he was done with it. That was almost 30 years ago, never heard from him since.
That's quite a story Ed, thanks for sharing it and sorry you had to let the car go. There are far more stories about "the one that got away" than the other way around. Mine was a '69 Ram Air GTO. I feel your pain!
Outstanding video! AMC had some bright talent behind the scenes. Their dabble into Trans Am & other racing showed promise. The few musclecars they produced were stunning.
Next AMC should be the Hornet SC 360

I’ve been involved with an AMC car club and a couple hundred AMC car shows for the past thirty years, and have never heard of that. I know Ford did a special Canadian Sprint edition Mustang, pinto, and maverick in 1972, but I question AMC doing that.

Mom worked for an AMC dealership in Sarasota, back in the '60s-'70s, so I grow up owning AMC products, such as several American's, Classic's and an Ambassador, while both of my parents had Javelins.
If I had the cash this AMC scrambler or a 70 Buick GS would be the one's I would buy I love the underdogs. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

Excellent video. At some car shows I have seen a sleeper version of a Rambler Rogue with all the same SC performance features, minus the hood scoop, but with cool air induction via a snorkel behind the grill. Reminds me of the 1969 Dart 440 GTS: small, light weight, big engine. Nothing flashy, just lots of GO.
Back in the early 80s..we would go to a friend's house and he had one of these sitting in a garage with the motor out.. everyone sitting around talking car shit...hot outside, crusing and hitting houses of friends, riding in a 70 challenger 340 pistol grip RT/SE not knowing it would be worth that much later.
The S/C in the driveway was mine, unfortunately I sold it. Nice to see it again
Neighbor had a Hurst Hornet sc360. Slightly modified and very quick. Havent seen another. I remember seeing 85 on the speedo on our very short probably 1/8 mile street.
I have a 68 Javelin SST and had a 74. I see a SR/rambler at our AMC shows. I love the car. I’m quite familiar with the design my friend has a Rouge since new. Great video and great job. Reb Floyd
My buddy and his brother went down to the AMC Dealer in '69, our last year of High School and my Buddy bought a BRAND SPAKIN NEW Javelin and his brother bought the S/C Rambler as a package deal !! SWEET, FUN cars !!! ( I was stuck driving my '62 Chevy Impala with a 283 2bbl auto .... girls liked it tho !! "wink wink" ) LOL !!
I had a green one back then. 199 six automatic. Bottom of the barrell cheap at $2050 brand new, and it had a radio and heater....
I remember these cars! I had a '66 Rambler American that was an excellent car, so I always followed what AMC was doing.
Still a big fan of the '74 -'78 Matador, especially the fully loaded ones with the special trim packages.

TODAY January 12, 2018.....Two "A' paint scheme AMC SC /Ramblers sold for 50K, and 60K at MECUM Auction in Kissimmie, Fla.
I was at Mecum and it was the first time to see a "Machine". Quite a treat for me. Great to see these cars getting some respect now. Awesome car

It escapes most folks nowadays, but the $2995 cost of these back then would be right around $90,000 in today's money! Minimum wage back then was $1.50 / hr ! If wages had kept up with inflation, minimum wage today would be right at $45 / hr !

Mr. Thomas, the particular Hornet I experienced was a basic S/C 360 with a 3-speed and open rear end 3.15, not much in the option department. The owner had sold his Boss 302 on finding out he was a father. He wanted $1500 for it in '73. There was one enticement that was substantial. The original engine seized early and the only engine they could replace it was a 401. Yeah a 401. He said OK and while you're at it throw that Crane cam in there and add those headers. He gave me a "ride" in it and it was like a lost time incident that people who get abducted by aliens experience. I don't recall what happened after my ride, suffice to say I didn't get the car.
Hell yea! AMC is my favorite and to me the best most reliable cars u could have! I have a 1980 spirit gt, not even close to the power the sc rambler had but she has been an amazing car, i think all amc cars look good even the bullied pacer! From a big time amc fanatic i say thanks for this video but more importantly... AMC LIVES ON!!!!
If you were to dyno that car, you'd find it produces 330-340 HP...well above the 315 HP listed.
AMC was never interested in a "horsepower" battle with GM, Ford and Chrysler. Smoking some
GTO or 396 Chevelle (with a Rambler, no less), would always make for great fun...with "only"
315 horses!
God it was joyful to have the Rambler boys spoil a Big-3 party. There are still haters - no beautiful losers bwahahahahaha!
These cars were so light that even with "only" 315 horsepower they could still compete with just about anything on the street in those days. But we all know they really made more power than that. All those cars power ratings were at low rpm to keep the insurance premiums down and sell more cars
My favorite AMC muscle car ever made other than a 70 Rebel Machine or 70 Javelin Trans Am. All the 390/401 AMX and Javelin's and the Hornet S/C 360 were really cool cars too. I'd like to drop a 390 or 401/4 speed in a Gremlin so I could take it right to the drag strip and embarrass some Mustang's and Camaro's lol

One dollar in 1969 = $7.05 in 2020. So, if this car cost less than $3,000 in '69, that would be about $21,000 today, or a bit less! However, if you find one of these SC/Ramblers in like new condition to purchase now, you'll pay upwards of 50 Grand! Lol. Wouldn't it be a blast to drive one of these babies on the street today!? Hell yes it would!

The way he drove it, this car looks faster than most muscle cars. The others weren't driven as hard so look quite slow. This seems to be the most fun to drive.

Saw a brand new one 1 at the local dealer, stopped, looked, drooled and moved on. Since that day, I have seen 1 more on the road, but that could have been a fake. Pretty cool car.
I have a rambler 66 six cylinder and race a mustang and beat it with a passing gear after 75 mph was fun!
So did I (was my moms car). 232 2V was a good motor!
Great video. You don't see Ramblers that often anymore and SC Ramblers are really rarely seen. I saw one a year ago on Craigslist but had too much going on to buy another project.
hell, they were rare even in 1976. Back in those days, way before the internet, i was an amc fan but the only info on other amc's i could get was thru magazines. I happened upon a pretty beat up scRambler in san diego and thought it was a souped up rambler american. I was 15 at the time and was so excited i took a picture of it. I've since learned that they ran the scRambler in the baja 500 and wondered it it was one of those participated in the race because the car looked like it was lifted and had some offroad lights on it.
I have seen just one of those in my life time I always wanted one they are too cool

No heater! Lol. That alone tells you that this was a no nonsense car that meant business! I love AMC's! There just had to be some true sons of the South working there with all of the Rebel tags they had! Even today with Jeep being the only remnant of AMC still alive, the Jeep Renegades have tail lights that look like Rebel X's!
I had a 72 AMX with a 304, the previous owner added a performance carburetor, intake manifold. headers, flex fan and I think it might have had a different distributor. It only lacked positive traction, if it were not for that it would have been really quick. It was surprising how a few simple mods brought so much power from a little V8. Some people laughed at AMC, but just like the rest, they could be competitive with just a little work..
If this car had no heater why are there heater controls on the dash near the drivers left leg and two heater hoses going into the fire wall?
Guy in my town bought one new, he would wear a aviator cap, goggles and long white scarf looking for a race. Crazy times
Great video, just great voice over, you do justice here. My Hurst Rambler had the heater but no radio, how could you listen to it anyway? The "A" scheme paint does the job. Sadly I sold it many years ago, it was a fast car in the day. Last new car I bought for myself before getting married was, the 1973 Javelin AMX. 401 engine with the 4-speed manual and optional 390 rear gears. I still own this car today. The only non stock part on it is the 1970 Rebel Machine intake manifold. I just love the under dog.
Ed Hein-,I bought an 86 Jeep CJ7 in the early nineties with the owner telling me it had the venerable 304 V8 under the hood.After driving it ,noticing it had waaay more power than a 304 should,I discovered it in fact had a 401 someone had transplanted.Needless to say,that thing was ungodly fast,a real screamer.The 401 is one of The most underrated,and underappreciated engines of the muscle car era.

Those years I had a used model of the same car in Tehran Iran, there they called it smugglers car because they were so fast cops were not able to chase them. Those years American military families were living in Tehran block after block and even Iranians assembled this car in Tehran. Good old days

Hurst was always known for go loud and go proud, his partnership cars were always garish, but solid performers.
Sorry AMC but when I had my '67 Mustang GT with the 390 engine 4 speed I had two races with two different 'A' S/C Ramblers they were no match for my 'Tang. By the way, the drag races were done on Telegraph road near Dearborn Michigan.
AMC didn't have the money of the big 3 but instead jazzed up what they had with basically one engine and they pulled it off nicely with the AMX The Machine and the SCrambler and the Javelin .......
Mine was purchased for 2,998 dollars. It has a factory heater, and a factory AM radio.
I like Reverse is off of first gear. You will not hit Reverse when you power shift from
First to Second.

I've always liked obscure performance cars. I saw a new Ford hatchback that I liked the other day... 43,000 dollars!
Seeing any of the AMC cars feels like seeing a ghost. So rare on the road these days.
The one thing that looks like an (awful) add on is that hood scoop. A fiberglass hood with a molded in scoop would have looked nicer....but, looks were apparently not important, only 0-60 was.
My grandpa has one and he put racing seats in it and gave the actual seats to my dad
Thrush rep at Summit Motorama said Thrush still made the original "round can" style glasspack muffler, but I didn't find it on their site. What a shame that this is their 50th anniversary and don't offer the original Thrush. I would have bought a pair just because that was one of my first mods to my first car in the late 70's. Gardner Exhaust took a low mile SC and reproduced the Thrush but it isn't painted with Thrush trademark. What a shame.
I learned to drive in my mom's '68 Rambler American with a 199/automatic. The version I always wanted was the '67-only Rogue 343/4-speed. This car was cool, but the paint job was too over-the-top for me.
Could have bought a roller sans engine from a local wrecking yard back in the early 80's. I wish I would have bought it.
It reminds me of a "box Nova" except Chevy didn't have the balls to put 396 in one until they made the bigger 1968 Nova.
