    1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 4-Speed Muscle Car Of The Week Video #45
    Here's one for the Buick fans... a 1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 4-Speed in Saturn Yellow! Buick made 678 of these luxo-rockets in 1970, and they were certainly out of character for the Buick brand. Producing 360 horsepower and 510 ft. lbs. of torque, these capable street brawlers were running with the fastest Muscle Cars from any manufacturer. In fact, Motor Trend Magazine clocked a Stage 1 car running the quarter mile in 13.35 seconds @ 105.5 mph in '70, fast enough to be called their quickest test of 1970. The Brothers Collection never disappoints, and it certainly appeals to all Muscle Car brands.
    In this episode, we take a look at the history of the Buick GSX, along with 1970 Buick GSX 455 Stage 1 specs.

    From 1997 to 2017 I had the privilege of owning the documented highest optioned GSX ever built.
    It was a ‘70 Stage 1 with nearly every option that was available that year.
    Of my 5 GS cars, it was certainly the best one.

    To this day I regret trading my GS STAGE 1 4spd. in '78. My dad got it for me in '74. All I did was install Camaro radials on it & fed it SUNOCO 260 despite my dad advising against it, my mufflers were gone by l8 75. I wanted a Trans am, but, dad knew I'd be dead in no time. I had power steering,& brakes,front disc I did not understand why a 4spd had no console & bench seat. A/C ,room for 6ppl, brown with black vinyl top & interior. Gr8 car to travel. I couldn't find much aftermarket performance parts. But, I loved it. AWESOME MASTERPIECE.

    I think the 455 Buick engine was very underrated . Several years back I had a customer that raced the 455 and it was one of the fastest cars out there . But , he wouldn't spend the money for a set of good rods and they continually broke between the rod nut and the center of the cap . Never seen one come apart anywhere else . They were definitely torque monsters . The GSX is a very unusual car , I saw a picture once at the Buick Nationals of 10 or 12 of the yellow ones lined up side by side , thing of beauty .

    Beautiful car. Thanks for all the great information on it. I wish you could give that much detailed information on the majority of the other cars. Production numbers are always great to hear. Which of course will cause in some instances controversy. The more information the better. In 1991, I received a call from a friend that Charlie Sheen wants to look at my 1970 Superbee 440, 6 pack, and possibly make an offer. So, I told him to call them back and come on over. Someone had seen the car, parked at my friends paint shops display window. I lent it to him for a few weeks prior to being moved back to my garage. A couple hours later, Charlie pulled up to my driveway in 70 Buick GSX. He had people from Barrett-Jackson with him and his posse. I had just recently bought the car. So I was not exactly motivated to sell it. When it comes to cars. They are like my children to a point. There is always a number that will separate me from one of my cars. And if he was willing to meet that number. I was more than willing to sell it. So, after having his representatives look over the car and asked some questions and check documentation. I got to speak with Charlie. He was very down-to-earth. It was just two car guys talking. So that's my big brush with fame.

It was a saturn yellow non stage one with the turbo auto trans. It was a radio delete car but had the dealer install a am radio. As a young kid I drove the car to death and it never let me down.It held its own to most street racing. Sold the car about 1975. And like everyone I sold it for what a hood would cost now. $1200.

    The spoilers were functional on the car. The cars were tested extensively for best rear spoiler design. Both give best down force at speed. Only the Corvette handled better. The front spoiler also has a horizontal baffle that reduces engine compartment pressure at speed. The car returned better gas mileage and top end than regular GS's.

    That "360 hp" rating for the Stage-1 was bogus, just like many of the HP ratings by the auto-makers back in the day. Most folks who knew these engines well, have stated that the Stage-1 made in 1970 ( all later years lost power due to the government regulations ), made AT LEAST 420hp. If ya consider how heavy these cars were, and the fact the magazine testers got slightly faster or near equal times to the Hemi's and the LS6, which both made far more hp than Buick's factory claim of only "360 hp" for the Stage-1 made in 1970.......you would have to conclude that they truly DID make much more hp than advertised.

    • @twoeightythreez
      @twoeightythreez 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thats good, because the gross hp rating was a big overrating as it was. Buick's rating was more realistic. That makes the 700 to 1000hp modern day monsters even more impressive :)

      @@twoeightythreez Yeah. Engine and car technology has continued to advance throughout the time of the car. You can't compare the early muscle cars to today's version...... Crazy stuff is happening in the car world.

    • @DONDIVA1969

      swasey1952
      That’s not true. Kenne-Bell who specialized in Buick racing parts exclusively back then found that the best shift point for the Stage 1 engine was 5500 rpm. It could do 13.90’s straight off the showroom with no tuning at all. Most muscle car racing back then was done on the street stop light to stop light and the Stage 1 option was optimized for that. On the street with similar gears it would destroy Hemi’s and LS6’s because they had to be rev’d up to get in the power band. Stage 1 was strong just off idle. On the track the cars were pretty even in stock form but the GS usually had the edge because it stayed in tune longer with the milder hydraulic cam.

    • @DONDIVA1969
      @DONDIVA1969 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      swasey1952 Everybody knows the LS6 was a pig off the showroom floor. You might run mid 14's with it stock. You had to dyno tune it and run open headers to get it to run decent. That big cam was choked up with the stock manifolds and mufflers. Stage 1 was one of the very few cars that could run in the 13's pure stock. Easy target for a Stage 1 both of them in stock condition.

      swasey1952 The AHRA ASA Class record-holding Chevelle LS6 for the 1970 season posted a best of season trap speed of 106.76 mph, so your 121mph is either complete BS or relies on a hell of a lot of performance bolt-ons you have chosen not to mention.

Even Hot Rod magazine (I forget the year and month) put out an article of how the Buick GSX stage1 was a hemi killer. I still regret ever selling the car. Because it was a Buick, everyone thught of it as being just a mild mannered muscle car. But in reality when you stomped on the throttle it became a real beast.

    • @V8TV
      @V8TV  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The '66 GS 340 had big stripes, but not much else, not like the SS stripes on a Camaro or LeMans stripes on a Shelby. GSs had colors and pinstripes... but not billboards or mod-tops. They were understated until the 1970 GSX, are we wrong?

    • @noampitlik2332
      @noampitlik2332 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      V8TV The 1966 Skylark GS could come in "RR" paint code and was "Flame Red" ---quite a flashy look. They also had pinstripes. Also, I recall a very loud red in 69 called "Ralleye Red." Also, the fastest car in my town for some time in the 90s was a 69 Skylark Gran Sport. The 455 was too much for most. 70 certainly saw big changes, but earlier cars really performed, too.

      Buick GSX Stage1was known as the Hemi killer and i'm talking about the 426 Hemi. I had a 1970 Buick GSX stage1 and I raced a few Hemi cars and I blew there doors off! Hot Rod magazine did an article on the Buick GSX stage1 and stated themselves that the stage1 455 was a Hemi killer. And in the 1972 NHRA season, a Buick stage1 was undefeated.

    • @twoeightythreez
      @twoeightythreez 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was obviously underrated...being the 0 to 60 and quarter mile times were just about identical (with the buick actually being slightly quicker) between a GSX Stage 1 and the LS6 SS454 Chevelle. Actually, looking back at the ACTUAL outputs of these cars, the Buick was simply more REALISTICALLY rated.
      The buick was likely a tad bit lighter due to the lighter engine and 10 bolt...but that still means the 455 had nearly identical output to a 454.
      Its irrelevant, as a modern equivalent (such as a hellcat) would eat both of these alive.
      The Buick is still my dream car...and will always be my dream car. They were out of my reach 20 years ago..nowadays even the dream is too expensive...lol

    This video is 85 to 90% correct. The Stage1 option consists of 1) low-restriction dual exhausts, high-rpm-optional valve train; 2) special hydraulic lifter cam; 3) revised - higher pressure oil pump assembly; 4) 3.64:1 ratio limited slip axle assembly; 5) chrome valve covers; 6) re-calibrated ignition distributor 10 degrees initial vs 6 degrees, non-stage1; 7) larger fuel pump for increased fuel pressure & flow rate; 8) special transmissions 4-speed - M22, automatic - Turbo-400 - code BB; 9) cylinder heads part number same as non- Stage1, however intake/exhaust valves are larger along with unshrouded valves in cylinder head - plus - larger valve springs for increased high rpm operation; 10) Major option - Rallye Ride Handling Package- consisting of front/rear sway bars / stiffer coil springs / HD front/rear shock absorbers/ boxed lower control arms; 11) HD engine cooling; 12) Major option - Power Steering/Power Disc Brakes/Air Conditioning. Note 1 - Hot Rod -November 1969 - Article - Mr Muscle for 1970 - First run of the 1970 GS Stage1 with A/C came with 3.64:1 rear final drive. Later production units with A/C were 3.42:1 final drive. Note 2 - Motor Trend - January 1970 - Article - Without A Taste of Geritol - Buick GS Stage1 does the quarter mile in 13.38 @ 105.50 mph. This article shows all of the Special Parts that went into the Stage1 Option. Also, this article is not a GSX, as the GSX option was not available during this date. Note 3 - Cylinder Block - most cylinder block failures were due to over - revving & low oil pressure / rpm past safe rpm limits. Finally, most machine shops did not know the Buick internals - rod and crank specs- how to prepare a monster 455 Buick engine to live at high rpm

      This youtube is censoring my true statements by marking through my sentences. I know all of the options available for this vehicle both GS Stage1 along with the GSX which by the way was not available until April, 1970. Also, there wasn't a different part number for the Stage1 cylinder heads vs non stage1. The valves were larger & unshrouded 2.175 intake, 1.75 exhaust, whereas 2.160 intake, 1.60 exhaust for the non-Stage1 Also, there were a few A/C cars that came from Flint, Michigan with the special 3:91 gear set which was available in the Riviera GS came with A/C and a 3:91 rear gear set. I have personally owned my 1970 GS Stage1 since December 16, 1969 the first run of the 1970 model year series. I know this car inside and out, left and right. Buick history states that the 1970 GSX was available to the public beginning April 1970 as I have the original brochure of this option which was available in Apollo white or Saturn yellow.
