Trick for sentimental books: take the dust jacket and frame it, donate the book. Most second hand books that are hardcover lose their dust jackets anyway, or they get damaged over the years. Why not keep it?
Okay, my method for getting rid of books is anything I feel "meh" about goes unless it's part of a series. I only keep the books that bring me joy (a Mario Kondo references, so original I know 😂). Mostly, if it's not one that I feel like I'll reread, it's first on the chopping block on the rare occasion that I do an unhaul. (I don't have books showing up unannounced at this point in my life, so I tend to only get books that I've read and loved, hence the scarcity of unhauls.)
I do this too. I've gotten pretty good at gauging whether I'll reread a book or not. I actually have space to fill on my shelves because the last few books I've read have been donated because they were 3 star reads
As a sentimental person myself, I know the struggle hahahah my trick is getting all the books I know I should get rid of but can’t out of the bookshelf. So I bag them(to protect my babies -don’t misunderstand me I mean the books) and put them in a closet or something. Hey there, I am from Germany and have a lot of books but lately no motivation to read. You're channel gave me my energy back and I enjoy you're videos so much. So thank you❤️
Oh you did amazing. 3 books doesn't seem much but if u pull out 3 books each month you'll eventually have a bunch of place for new books. So do this clean out each month!! Love u the most
honestly, part of why i started to use Goodreads was to keep track of the ones that made me like them on the first/second/etc read. 4-5 stars can stay on my shelves. 3 stars, I can waffle about because like... it's dependent on whether or not I feel they have sentimental/rereadability/classic. 1-2 stars? GET GONE. it's hard to separate out feelings, but part of the Konmari method is that you pull ALL OF YOUR BOOKS FROM THEIR PLACE. this is 1) so you can see the books outside of something organized (i.e. shelf placement/aesthetics) and 2) so you have to face the amount of books you DO have and go forward accordingly. Another thing about the Konmari method is that you pick each book up, hold them in your hand, and think hard about how you feel about it. 1) does it spark joy? i.e. do you feel excited to read it? would you buy this book if you didn't already have it? do you feel like you would read it again? is it sentimental? (sentimental things go last), 2) if you're leaning toward "meh" feelings, consider: why are you "meh"? is it because the story didn't hit you in a place you wanted to be hit? is it because the handling of the narrative wasn't to your expectations? is it because it just wasn't a good read for you?, and 3) if you're leaning toward "bye" feelings, consider: someone else may like this book more than you and you can assist that book to getting somewhere someone who will LOVE IT and CHERISH IT rather than keep it on a shelf to gather dust. one thing Konmari also says is that if you feel sentimental about something but it's something you're ready to part with but are reluctant to because of the sentimental reason: take a picture that encapsulates why it's sentimental for you. And then move on. let someone else have a chance to love that book. tl;dr don't be afraid to let things go. always remember: there's plenty of book nerds out there with different tastes than you. and even if something wasn't to your taste, that doesn't make it a bad book. let someone else love that book. that book may actually belong to someone else and it's your goal to make sure that book is loved.
Fire Fox Same! As you can tell from my username I am a Percy Jackson fan, so when he did that I was about to cry. The utter relief that passed through me when he said he was joking was *unreal*
I can totally relate with the Iron Trial series. I have been trying to buck up the courage read The Silver....something. I cannot even remember the name
This is just like me trying to unhaul my books. I go through this debate every time. As for the book that has a cover you really like, keep the cover if it can be removed. Then frame it or make some art piece with it and get rid of the book. If the cover can't be removed make a photocopy or just take a picture of it, (I've done this myself with book covers and completed puzzles) that way you have a memory of it, but the book itself need not take up space on your shelf.
Loving all your recent videos lately! I relate to this one so much, there are so many books on my shelf atm that I can’t bring myself to let go of even though I’m probably not gonna read them again😭😂
Every time I watch your vids I feel inspired to read my books. 😆 even if I just finished a book or am in the middle of a book. Also. Makes me wanna buy books.
Good step! The way unhaul books is if I consider unhauling if I rated it 3* (not a good rating for me). If it was 1 or 2 * I almost always unhaul automatically. If I bought it full price i give it to a friend as a present.
Good luck with your books ! I can't get rid of them if they are on the bookshelves, so I always take them off (all of them, in the same time), and then 60 books go on to a new life 🤷♀️
If you don't want get rid of them because of sentimental reasons or like the cover just keep the covers (if hardback) I always to that & have a folder for them I fold them on the edge so they stay flat & not have a crease in the middle of the cover where the titled at
When I can’t fully decide if I want to keep certain books, I will sometimes take all of the ones I’m unsure about and put them somewhere I can’t see them. If after awhile, a week, a month or even longer and I have not missed them I will give them away or if I did miss them they get to live on my bookshelf again, sometimes it may only be one that I keep and the rest go...Plus I like to believe that when I give my books away they will go on to have fun adventures and meet lots of new readers, maybe even send me postcards from all the fun places they have been😅😁 although I have yet to receive a postcard😓😊
Hey Jesse, I'm also trying to clear some space on my shelves and this is what i've come up with (partly with the spark's joy method). If you like the cover but not the book, make a photo copy of the cover and hang it up somewhere, then you'll still have the cover art and can get rid of the book. As for the ones you're not sure about, pull them off the shelf and set them on a table or just to the side. If you still feel you need them after a few months, keep. If not, donate. And finally, start by picking up one of your favorite books, something that excites you. That's Mari Kondo's "spark joy" feeling. Then hold one of the books you absolutely hated. That's the other end of the spectrum. When you hold the books you aren't sure about, think about where they fall on that spectrum and discard the ones on the lower end. Just a few tricks i've been using.
Xgrapes X, you don’t have to throw them away! You can donate them so someone else can read them; then you’ll feel good that someone else has the chance to read the books you liked. (If you are literally going to throw a book away, at least recycle it)
My whole goal of developing a library is having something to pass down to my kids, if I ever have kids. So everything I keep, I think to myself: "Is this something I could actively recommend to someone else and feel good about it?" When I'm on the fence about donating a book, I think about the fact that someone else will come across the book, love it, and give it a better home than I can. I get that it's hard to let go, but if the book isn't getting any use with you, you might as well donate it to a library so some person can discover magic in the book that maybe didn't work for you! Plus, you're contributing to a good cause that benefits your neighborhood!
i know that getting rid of books is really hard (i used to never get rid of books but have been enlightened ) but i’m in the process of moving out and needed to clear out some books. it was actually easier than i expected; i used a combination of marie kondo’s method and my own. i pulled all my books out to rearrange my bookshelves and got rid of them as i was putting them back. i got rid of 15 books (which doesn’t seem like a lot but i don’t own that many books). i hope you’re able to get rid of more books and clear out the bad book energy!
Lol I’m currently rereading the Throne of Glass series- minus #4 onward lol -and I got kind of scared when Jesse said “There’s something on this shelf I might get rid of”😂😂
Yeah I tried to read Queen of Shadows like 4 times but reading the series on an e book is helpful- it helped me read them faster and I’m on the third one
I like to think of my bookshelves as something that represents me as a reader. If there is something that I don’t like, then that book isn’t helping me see all the joy books bring me. I hope that makes sense. Hope you find a way to make room for all the books
Here is my personal book unhauling philosophy: If I’m not going to reread it, it’s gone. I understand how beautiful covers are a trap to keep books you didn’t love or like. I find myself wanting to buy “Wicked Saints” because of the cover but I didn’t love the book. However, you have to let them go otherwise, where else are you going to put books you’ll actually reread?
I recently moved to Florida and had to give three bookcases worth of books away and it was horrible, but I gave a lot of mine to one of my favorite co-workers and her family was so excited to read them and then if you have a local 2nd and Charles they will give you store credit or cash for them so you can buy new books! YOU CAN DO THIS!
I always use the same system when sorting out books which is asking myself a few questions and for me it works great: For books that i haven't read yet: 1. Reading the description; do i still want to read it? ->yes! I'll keep it ->no! 2. Was it a gift and i would feel bad if i gave it away? ->yes! keep it ->no! off it goes for books i have already read: 1. Do i want to read it again? ->yes! I'll keep it ->no! 2. Do i have other sentimental reasons to keep it? ->yes! I'll keep it ->no! off it goes I never feel bad for giving away books bec it feels like giving them a new life
I think 3 books are ok, as long as you had second thoughts about the others. (on the other hand, I understand your disappointment, you made no room for me ones in the end. I feel you, this happens to me pretty often) And of course Jesse, a pretty cover is definitely a very good reason for keeping a book!! Hellooooo!! 😁📙💙
My tip: If I am unsure if I will ever read a book, I get rid of it. I can always re-buy it or go to the library. If I was only semi-interested, it is probably better that it goes to someone else anyway. I did a huge cleanout of my bookshelves last year and got rid of about 50 books, most of which had been on my bookshelf for over 2 years and I had never touched. Now my TBR shelf is down to about 100 books!

Lol I totally understand the need to clear out “bad” books! Usually books that have been given to me or I got for dirt cheap. Gotta make room for new and better stuff!
... Wait... you mean it isn’t normal to talk and refer to books as friends?... 😂 I do the same thing
This is my first of your videos and you are so much fun to watch.
Hey there, I am from Germany and have a lot of books but lately no motivation to read. You're channel gave me my energy back and I enjoy you're videos so much. So thank you❤️
I notice scythe on your shelf...I'm actually borrowing that one from the library and I'm super excited!!
I’m not gonna lie... I almost had a heart attack when you pulled that Riordan trick. Don’t do that to me man!
Oh you did amazing. 3 books doesn't seem much but if u pull out 3 books each month you'll eventually have a bunch of place for new books. So do this clean out each month!! Love u the most
Loved the description of the untouchable shelf.
honestly, part of why i started to use Goodreads was to keep track of the ones that made me like them on the first/second/etc read.
Do you know HOW FAST I was about to click off when Jesse ‘Thanos Snapped’ his Rick Riordan shelf-
Fire Fox Same!
I SWEAR EVERY NEW VIDEO IM LIKE HOW CAN JESSES EDITING GET ANY BETTER AND THEN IT DOES
This is just like me trying to unhaul my books.
Haha. Really enjoyed this! I have to decide what books to let go, too. I'm clearly running out of bookshelf space.
Yes I like that you go through the process with us!!!
Loving all your recent videos lately! I relate to this one so much, there are so many books on my shelf atm that I can’t bring myself to let go of even though I’m probably not gonna read them again😭😂
We have been BLESSED-I mean an upload THREE days in a row!
🤗
Oh can you make a vlog out of the reorganizing!!
Every time I watch your vids I feel inspired to read my books. 😆 even if I just finished a book or am in the middle of a book. Also. Makes me wanna buy books.
Never get rid of books! I loved hearing about the books that weren’t your favorite.
Three videos in a row, that's awesome!
Omg I feel your sentimental attachment to books, like, sameeee
Just a few tricks i've been using.
whenever I try to clean my bookshelves I end up making a million excuses to keep all the books cause I don't want to throw them away
Xgrapes X, you don’t have to throw them away! You can donate them so someone else can read them; then you’ll feel good that someone else has the chance to read the books you liked. (If you are literally going to throw a book away, at least recycle it)
I'm reading Noggin right now! Pretty sure you introduced me to him with Where Things Come Back!
Lol I’m currently rereading the Throne of Glass series- minus #4 onward lol -and I got kind of scared when Jesse said “There’s something on this shelf I might get rid of”😂😂
I'm always thinking of rereading throne of glass until heir of fire or maaaaybe queen of shadows,,, but onwards it's a no no for me 😂😂
Yeah I tried to read Queen of Shadows like 4 times but reading the series on an e book is helpful- it helped me read them faster and I’m on the third one
I like to think of my bookshelves as something that represents me as a reader. If there is something that I don’t like, then that book isn’t helping me see all the joy books bring me. I hope that makes sense. Hope you find a way to make room for all the books
Percy Jackson
**puff**
Me: 😧 how dare you
**puff again**
Me: oh ok
Here is my personal book unhauling philosophy: If I’m not going to reread it, it’s gone.
I understand how beautiful covers are a trap to keep books you didn’t love or like. I find myself wanting to buy “Wicked Saints” because of the cover but I didn’t love the book. However, you have to let them go otherwise, where else are you going to put books you’ll actually reread?
My heart skipped 3 beats, literally, when Jesse snapped the Rick Riordan out of existence. So shocked was I that my forehead and the wall collided
I’ve actually adapted pieces of Marie Kondo’s method when trying to decide if I’m in hailing books or DNF-ing them. It really helps.
I always use the same system when sorting out books which is asking myself a few questions and for me it works great:
For books that i haven't read yet:
1. Reading the description; do i still want to read it?
->yes! I'll keep it
->no! 2. Was it a gift and i would feel bad if i gave it away?
->yes! keep it
->no! off it goes
for books i have already read:
1. Do i want to read it again?
->yes! I'll keep it
->no! 2. Do i have other sentimental reasons to keep it?
->yes! I'll keep it
->no! off it goes
I never feel bad for giving away books bec it feels like giving them a new life
I LOVE THE STARFLIGHT SERIES!!! I don’t have a copy of the first book but I still read it and in my opinion it was AMAZING!
I think 3 books are ok, as long as you had second thoughts about the others. (on the other hand, I understand your disappointment, you made no room for me ones in the end. I feel you, this happens to me pretty often)
And of course Jesse, a pretty cover is definitely a very good reason for keeping a book!! Hellooooo!!
