  • Folks ask me what my favorite book on Homemaking is, and hands down, it is Shannon Hayes’ Radical Homemakers. Here’s what I love about it.
This video is a re-upload from my former channel on eco-domesticity, Parkrose Hausfrau. I am moving videos from that channel to Parkrose Permaculture so that more folks can access them. It's a slow process, thanks for being patient with me, and be sure to check out my regular Hausfrau Friday series here on the Parkrose Permaculture TH-cam Channel. Thanks!

I’ve been struggling as a stay at home mom. Feeling like I’m not doing enough even though I’m constantly working just because I don’t bring in a paycheck. Your videos give me the validation I need, thank you so much.

I'm so glad I found this video. Will be purchasing this book.
I actually said aloud today that the decision to quit my job and stay home with the kids is a feminist choice because I have the should have the right to choose how I want to live my life without social penalties.
Obviously, I am lucky that I have a husband who earns enough to support the family financially. But we always preface this discussion with this and never mention how HE is lucky that I am willing and able to stay home and support the family in a practical sense 😂 I reject the notion that I need to have a career in order to be fulfilled - I just am not career driven at all, never have been. I'm not a traditionalist or religious, I just like this life. My husband will still be contributing to the household workload, as will my children, as they all live here too but I like the idea of being home to hurriedly bring the washing down in a sudden downpour 😂😂😂 or baking for lunch boxes.
I'm looking forward to contributing to my community in ways that do not pay but absolutely have incredible meaning to me and value to society. I didn't expect to want this life but ive tried being a working mum and a stay at home mum and now I'm here I'm embracing the latter. It'll likely be thankless and filled with judgement but I feel like I'm coming into my "I don't care" season of life 😂😂😂😂

I am very much a progressive feminist type, but I have long thought that a critical failure of second wave feminism was that in their rush to 'escape' domesticity they failed to bring light to or even recognize them selves the real labor of being a homemaker, in the process further devaluing that labor. That not only left women who felt called to, or where forced by circumstance to be homemakers but also limiting acceptability of men who might be called to do it. In the end it hurts everyone, both adults and children. I do believe especially in families with children there is inherent value with having a stay at home parent, even if your not homeschooling etc.. And I think which ever adult in the house is best suited to the job should have the opportunity to do it without also having to stress about how their lack of paid labor hurts the house.

Husbandry was also once the main male profession, while wifery was the main female profession. That's why it's still called animal husbandry. All of these skills are needed to provide the food, clothing, and shelter necessary for life. Both husband and wife needed each other's talents. Too bad moderns devalue such essential work so much.

I just ordered this book. My husband is a stay at home dad and I'm a therapist that works from home. We're have the privilege in our schedules, but we lack many skills. We can learn those. We've been gardening since the pandemic and this year we got chickens for the first time this year!

This books sounds AMAZING and exactly what I've been looking for (for 30 years!) I do like Alexander Stoddard too for ideas about how to make things lovely and I don't remember it being overly religious...and yes...secular resources are way too hard to find for those of us who find value in homemaking (and homeschooling). Thank you for sharing!

Amen! My husband found this book when we decided to buy a house. He looked up "Homebuying for Punks" and this came up. Fellow radical mom here too. Smash capitalism!!

Thank you for sharing. I choosed to live in the country, homemaking and homeschooling thirty years ago as a way of emotional healing and focus on things that are truly important. It was a lonely path then and I had many doubts about the "value" of this kind of life but my heart was all in it so never regretted and feel very grateful for it.

This is a really inspiring book, also Sharon Astyk's books Making Home, Depletion and Abundance and Independence Days, all in a similar vein really.

Thank you for mentioning Astyk's books. I have recommended them to so many people and I re-read Making Home once a year just to stay inspired. If we can keep recommending them, maybe they will never go out of print. :)

Thank you, Angela. You are blowing my mind rn. I've been in Covid isolation and you have kept my mind busy and almost feel like a friend to me now. I'm flying out of being very sick excited to start permaculture in my yard and so heartened to know there are like minds out there. Not only that, you have traveled some paths before me (my kids are tiny) and I'm so happy to have you as a resource as I raise them with ethics that stand outside of religious dogma. There are so many things I've been encountering that make my stomach sick, but I had no words to give them. Thanks for giving me the words and the inspiration. You're a gem.🧡

I can’t wait to read this book! As someone who has been pursuing lifestyle change, but is not yet emotionally drawn towards gardening or cooking, I find it inspiring to find someone who is foremost(I get the sense) looking at this project politically. Visiting, playing cards, taking a walk around the block, and learning to read books again are other ways we can fight the system and learn to live richly.

I am so glad you loved this book too. I read it in 2010 when it came out. I had just had my first child and I was so happy to find such a well written book that addressed everything I was being called to do.

Before the mid twentieth century, most women were "professional homemaders".

Constant harassment with the same ad is NOT going to make me feel more sympathy for the victims of Sandy Hook.
