Perhaps you could have pointed out that she was a significant patron of the arts and sympathised with the Enlightenment 'philosophes', supporting the 'Encyclopédie'. Nancy Mitford wrote an excellent, sympathetic biography of her, simply entitled 'Madame de Pompadour'.

But despite all her qualities, she probably was an immoral woman. "Let there be flood after us" laughed she, refering undoubtfully to the turmolous mood of the commoners. And just a few decades later, Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette and many other nobles got to experience the flood that De Pompadour laughed about. I wonder if she was still laughing on the other side.
There are even longer names, dear tatik 😉 For example, the name of Louis XIV's famous mistress was Françoise Athénaïs de Mortemart de Rochechouart, marquise de Montespan 🙂

Both had qualities and defaults. But I have an affection for madame du Barry, because she was not political at all. She never interfered with the government and the ruling of the country, and she was very kind to people, and very devoted to the king.
