BMW X1 F48 xDrive25i (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • BMW X1 F48 has a big advantage over the model it replaces: it looks nothing like the X1 E84. BMW is adamant that small, premium crossovers are what customers want. Judging by the competition (Mercedes GLA, Audi Q3) there really is a demand for this type of cars. The new BMW X1 looks less like the 1 Series, and more like the X3. And that's a good thing, because it almost justifies the price BMW will charge you for the X1.

    Another fantastic review! I like how you cover so many of the little details which in turn are important to somebody owning a new car for a good few years. I've noticed lately that some reviewers can be a bit suggestive in regards to what they might think about certain parts of a car. Whereas you just speak your mind and get straight to the point, which gives people a checklist of things to look out for if they are considering buying. That is why I subscribed to your channel such a long time ago and trust your advice. Keep up the good work!

    There are only a few crossovers that I 'get': C4 Cactus and Land Rover Evoque being good examples. They look cool and are different enough. For the price of an X1, you can get a 3-series touring. This is a no-brainer for me. Great review though, I like your work!

    • @GeorgeSotirov

      The 3 series touring is more cramped inside, less practical and slightly more expensive. So I don't think it's a no brainer.

    as of today, nearly 2020, the X1 has very much depreciated and you can get a good 3 year old example for about 25.000€.
    Since you mentioned the alternatives, could you help naming some of them?
    To be honest, at the moment I am somewhere between Mazda CX-5 (I love the interior, although it might be a bit too big for me, but the CX-30 is too expensive since it's a new car), the Mazda 6 (because again, I love the interior, might be a bit too big for my needs, and you absolutely thrown that car to garbage in your review) and this X1. Which one would you choose? What other alternatives would you put on the table? Thank you!

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mazda6 doesn't make sense in 2.5L AT version. A 2.0 6MT is alright. I hate Mazda's infotainment system, but since we're all on our smartphones these days, this may not be a deal breaker. As for this X1 (used) I would look for a certified pre-owned car with as long warranty, as possible. I'm not saying it will go wrong, but if it will, BMW tends to be expensive, because of the badge.
      Out of new cars that just came out, I would take the KIA XCeed for a test drive. It could be slightly cheaper, than the CX-30. In the 2nd hand market, it seems everyone is making crossovers, but finding an interesting one is a challenge. There should be massive discounts on the outgoing Mercedes GLA.

  • @cameraramblings4107
    @cameraramblings4107 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question, How do you feel about it as a used option once all the depreciation had occurred? Used in the uk at the moment you can pick one up for around £15k on a 17 plate. Any thoughts? Thanks

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Price aside, it's still awkwardly designed and it's lightyears behind in tech. I like the looks, but I had problems getting in and out of it, and that would be a dealbreaker for me. Also you don't get have the modern driver aids that you can find on an A Class Merc these days.

  • @kivancuysal

    Thanks for the informative video. Could you please elaborate more on the xdrive system in an X1? How is it compared to the AWD systems on other premium German brands?
    I am a weekend adventurer and I usually go up on snowy mountains twice a year. I am between an xdrive or an sdrive X1.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have no reliable/comparable method of presenting AWD/4WD in action. I do not consider this to be an off road vehicle. That said I did drive though some mud (field road unfrozen after winter), and the car did not get stuck. However it was clear the X1 was out of its comfort zone. 50 metres more, and probably I would have to call for a tractor :)
      IMO in most cases a good set of tires will get you further in real-life situations, than AWD. But I would not buy an X BMW with sDrive, just because it doesn't feel right.

    Did you get the chance to drive the X1 on a longer stint (100km or more)? If so, how did you find the seats? I've tried the car and really liked it. But I have some concerns about the front seats. I often do longer stints (250km or more) and I found the seats to be a bit narrow even if I'm a skinny guy. And during a quick testdrive this is hard to evaluate...

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I took this for a weekend drive, so I did spend a couple of hours in these seats. As you probably noticed I'm not exactly skinny, and I didn't find these seats tight. Some bucket seats in sport cars are tight, but not these. I also have a bad back, so if a seat is bad, I can tell in about half an hour. Sometimes sooner. These seats were comfortable. Not best in class, but above average. I don't know what car you had for the test drive. Maybe you had a car with some sport seats option?

    • @RiddickHBG
      @RiddickHBG 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the quick reply :) Well actually I can see that the car you tested was the sport line with the sport seats :). And I tested the same version. But since I'm skinnier than you I should be fine. Again, thanks a lot for your reply.

    • @cw205mi16

      Sit in a new VW Tiguan, Seat Ateca and you will realise this X1 is more premium feeling with better quality materials that run through to the back (unlike Tiguan which has hard plastics everywhere). Like the Q3 it is a cut above the Tiguan, and way above Asian offerings.

  • @mmmakeee
    @mmmakeee 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    What do you think of the LED headlights? I mean, are they powerful enough? Here in Finland, a car magazine always tests the headlights of test-driven cars, and the result seemed very weak. I currently drive an A4 with bi-xenon headlights, which are good in width but lack range, would you be able to compare the X1's LEDs to xenons?
    Another thing: Many owners have reported quite heavy road noise in the cockpit. Did you notice anything worth mentioning, apart from the wind noise? I should probably take the X1 for a longer test drive to find out what kind of consumption I'm able to achieve. With my A4, I can easily average less than 4,5L/100km in normal road/highway driving.
    Picking a small SUV, preferably a premium one, sure is difficult. I worry most about those above-mentioned things in the X1, while the Q3's center console looks kind of cheap and the GLA is too small.
    Thanks in advance!

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I rarely get to drive test cars in rural, dark areas late at night, preferably with some sporadic oncoming traffic to be able to establish how good the headlights are. I have no proper methodology or equipment to present findings of such tests. I could do a separate channel devoted solely to the headlights. So no, I cannot answer your question.
      Road noise depends on a number of factors, including type surface the car is driven on, speed, tires, weather. There is also your perception resulting from acoustics of a given car. I don't recall the X1 being above/below average in this respect. That said, it's not noticeably better in this sphere, than KIA Sportage. Yes, it has better dynamics, but as a package it's not worth twice the price.
      I know what you mean about choosing a premium compact crossover. Unless you're small enough to make this about convenience (my girlfriend liked X1 size), I'd probably go easy on the options, and choose an X3. I suspect new MINI Countryman is around the corner, so you could wait for that.

    • @mmmakeee
      @mmmakeee 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the quick answer! We have quite rough roads here in Finland, so I'll skip the run flats, which usually tend to make cars louder. I test drove the new Tucson, which was surprisingly good compared to the X1, but the diesel models lack power. And since I drive a lot, I'm definitely going to pick a diesel model.
      I also prefer manuals, so I'm not considering the X3, even knowing that the 8-speed ZF is great. I think it'll be a choice between the Mazda CX-5, which I haven't driven yet, and the X1. I need to look into the new Countryman, since I haven't thought of it as an option. Thanks again for the insights!

There is no way after buying three BMWs in a row over a period of 10 years, that I'm suddenly going to take a risk and buy a Merc because it has an extra cup holder or something. I only want BMWs, and I don't care if Audi or Lexus or Merc make a better car in anyone's opinion, because it won't be a BMW.
