Lol konako nailed it on the head, gla is NOT a freaking suv. I think they say it is so they can charge more. I've been in one and is so cramped and my forehead touches the freaking ceiling. I mean I'm tall but damn. Is a goddamm hatchback no matter what the sales ppl say. Maybe can pass as a wagon maybe.
+Carlos Morales It's a newer car. They're very, very close in terms of our rankings - both earn 4.2 out of 5 stars - but we'd opt for the more recent model. It's really down to personal preference though, so please take both for a test drive!
+Constantine Joseph It's too early to be sure. The #Dieselgate scandal rumbles on. So far though, it only affects NOX - something that doesn't affect the pockets of British drivers at the moment!
+notformebeaky Apart from all the respiratory system issues, exposure to high NO2 concentrations during pregnancy causes psychomotor development problems in children. So saying "everything is fine, British drivers' pockets were not affected" is just stupid and irresponsible. As for pristine British air ... well, that depends where you live. London has the highest NOx concentration of all European capital cities.
Excellent review! Of all the videos or indeed articles written about the new X1, only Carbuyer has mentioned that this is the only x-drive BMW which is an "on demand" all wheel drive SUV. All other x-drive vehicles are full time all wheel drive, splitting power 40 - 60 (front - rear), where as this has 100% of the power going to the front wheels until it senses slippage...
Yes, I had to check that as other reviews said it was like the X3, X5 etc, which are mainly rear wheel drive. Having driven one today, it's very good. I've had 9 BMWs over 28 years. Drove 2.0d Xdrive Sport today.
+Aristotelis Mitsiou (tkk7406) BMW going the way of Audi it seems, taking away one of there stronger points to be honest. However, as Mat noted I dont think it matters on the X1
+Aristotelis Mitsiou (tkk7406) You two obviously don't understand how these cars are set up. Having RWD or FWD in a small SUV like this is TOTALLY irrelevant, you'll never ever get any advantage by having RWD. In fact, FWD haas an advantage in poor weather and light off-roading
+Aristotelis Mitsiou (tkk7406) haha you really dont understand the car industry. your way of thinking is so outdated, you are similar to those who opposed when BMW built the worlds first dynamic SUV in 15 years ago: the X5.
+Narrowc ross You think that it doesn't matter on the X1 now, but then in a few years the 3 series will go FWD, and then in a few more years their M models, just gonna gradually go all FWD like every other manufacturer. When that day comes I'll just start riding a bike.
I'm buying this car in 5 months. I would like to get some advice wether I should buy a diesel or petrol version? I do mostly small trips (4 time a day 4 miles) but the problem is I really like to go far in the weekend (trips of about 300 miles) ; I only drive 10 000 miles a year. All advice about interesting options are welcome. I already know the adaptive dampers are essential. Thanks in advance.
notformebeaky Oh, I didn't know. We don't really buy station wagons in the US. That's why I was asking the question, I don't know about car culture in countries that I do not live in. DUH. I'm trying to learn. How am I, someone that's never driven in the UK, going to know how wide the roads are when I've never been there?
Why do you always force the bottles in, hit the compartment doors real hard and yank the removable bits and pieces harshly from cars? Does it make you feel better?
Generally speaking, when the front seats are raised up, you do get improved legroom for back passengers but you also decrease their visibility. So I think you should stop mentioning it as a positive...
I wonder if its better to get the X1 or the 3 series GT. I heard their height difference is small and that the X1 is not essentially an SUV. I still rate this car though, its a pity in South Africa there is no Xdrive model with manual transmission.
Please don't do visibility test with GoPro headcam while driving. Looking over your shoulder while driving curvy road is simply not safe. Besides, while vehicle isn't moving you will have a chance to better showcase car's visibility.
I didn't really find the old X1 ugly. The new definitely looks much better. It is taller and it looks like a real small SUV. The old one looks like an estate.
Oh wow im surprised they have reclining, sliding rear seats and easy access buttons for folding the seats down. These features weren't included in the 2017 X5 smh..
Actually there is LESS space between the front and rear wheels in the new X1. The new X1 WHEELBASE is SHORTER. However there is more interior space because of the transverse engine layout making the engine bay smaller.
AWD isn't just for off-roading. In the rain it provides better handling and with Britain's increasingly volatile whether I think that would be a good thing. But PERMANENT AWD. Not this part-time stuff... Any BMW SUVs have proper AWD?
I recently got an 2019 sdrive, petrol. Nice car. But it IS a firm ride, and my wife and I found it quite bumpy, not so smooth. Also fuel economy is a bit meh. 42.mpg. My wife and I commute to London for our respective jobs, around 60 mile round trip. My wife works five days a week. So she drives the BMW. And I have to say on a full tank you would just scrape 5 days… which makes no sense. That’s only 300 miles. My Audi A3 can do around 7 to 10 days. I can drive to London and back 60 miles on a full tank and that fuel gauge won’t even move. It’s Petrol.
It's so cute. Why did they have to screw everything for a little bit more interior space? Of course it looks better. It's 2017., plus it also costs more, so they afforded to put better materials. I you want driving pleasure, look somewhere else, except there is no small SUV that handles like the old X1. I would wait for x2.
naah..this means that the audi q3 is the better looking..better handling and price wise cheaper..still it may be a bit smaller but it has a better ground clearance and at the end you get that premium audi interior quality...
Matt is one of my favourite reviewers ever, just so funny and informative
+Ro W Matt is amazing. I love to watch all his videos.
+Ro W Get a room.
RandomTechS@#T Dont get how it quite turned into that but anyway moving on
+Ro W yeah you do. go for it
Ditto :)
So it worth getting?
At least it looks like an SUV. Unlike the other cars in its class
+KonaKoo TRUEEEEEE!! I still find it hilarious that Mercedes is trying hard to market the GLA as a 'compact SUV' when it looks anything but an SUV
Nice review Mat...how good or bad is this BMW X1 compared to an Audi Q3?
+Carlos Morales It's a newer car. They're very, very close in terms of our rankings - both earn 4.2 out of 5 stars - but we'd opt for the more recent model. It's really down to personal preference though, so please take both for a test drive!
from the side who thinks it kinda looks like a bigger 2 series
+Carlos Morales X1 is nicer, I've owned both and I prefer the BMW.
+Carlos Morales new x1 has way more leg room and cargo space then the q3, which is a huge win in my books
+Carlos Morales i had a Q3. dont get one. In fact dont get either
A huuuuuge improvement from the previous X1! Looks like a BMW should, both inside and outside. Great review Mat!
Mat should be one of the hosts of the "New" Top Gear show.
Carbuyer sucks without Mat....
+Moonface00z Mat the MVP
He's at carwow now...
This guy is perfect to present Top Gear !
So is the emission ratings real or tweaked?
+Constantine Joseph It's too early to be sure. The #Dieselgate scandal rumbles on. So far though, it only affects NOX - something that doesn't affect the pockets of British drivers at the moment!
+Carbuyer But it affects British lungs and environment I assume. So this "don't worry" approach is not justified.
+notformebeaky Yet rotten teeth. Go figure.
+Constantine Joseph Who cares?
Such a good looking car. With the recent vw/audi emissions scandals, this car has practically no rivals.
GLC?
I forgot GLA. That might be the correct rival.
Sule bereaux you're right. the GLA and evoque. however with the reliability on those land rovers...
+thoravian Erm BMW have been caught fiddling with their engines too! In fact their worse than VW!
Theweescot Autobild published an apology on the 3rd of october...somepeople just live in the stone age...
Great review as usual! never gets boring seeing Matt reviewing a new car.But I love this new x1! miles better than the old one
Great review. Would you say there's a big difference between the 2016 and 2018 models?
Not much
such an improvement from the old X1!
IKR I LOVE THIS CAR ITS LIKE A MINI X5 :D
Excellent review! Of all the videos or indeed articles written about the new X1, only Carbuyer has mentioned that this is the only x-drive BMW which is an "on demand" all wheel drive SUV. Bet you any money that if the car didn't have so many options on it, he wouldn't have liked it as much. Especially the interior.
So it's not a good car is it?
If for someone to like it, it needs 10k worth of options, the car is crap.
+Harvard MathGod Not all of them do it like this.
Not another front-wheel-drive BMW again...
+Aristotelis Mitsiou (tkk7406) BMW going the way of Audi it seems, taking away one of there stronger points to be honest. However, as Mat noted I dont think it matters on the X1
Narrowc ross It seems so, and although it may not matter, the concept of it is really what bothers me.

I really was waiting for this review!!! Will probably test drive it this week ....so which one is the best of the lot?? X1, GLA OR Q3???
X1 for sure
I have always loved your reviews, there excellent! and now i'm subscribed.
new bmw x1 is basically technical same as bmw series 2 active tourer with slightly different design. Nice review.
I'm buying this car in 5 months. I would like to get some advice wether I should buy a diesel or petrol version? Drive the M Sport version of this for 2 years now, I'd give it a 10/10 in every category couldnt recommend it more
Hello, American here. WHY ARE THE ROADS SO NARROW? I got very nervous when he switched to the head cam.
We don't have that kind of space in good old europe ^^ T
That's sad. I'm sorry.
Because we don't like driving big wobbly SUVs all the time.
But you do like station wagons (Or Estates, right?)... which are wide.
notformebeaky Oh, I didn't know. We don't really buy station wagons in the US.
That's why I was asking the question, I don't know about car culture in countries that I do not live in. DUH. I'm trying to learn. How am I, someone that's never driven in the UK, going to know how wide the roads are when I've never been there?
Buying a 2016 BMW X1 I used to own a 2006 Vauxhall corsa
Progress 👏
Is that a solid black or Metallic black?
Another great review! Love the way you point out the absolutely abused option list. Besides that I think that love this car!
cannot believe X1 does not have digital instrument cluster. The one in this model reminds me of my 10-year old Fiat Punto.
Why do you always force the bottles in, hit the compartment doors real hard and yank the removable bits and pieces harshly from cars? Does it make you feel better?
this is the only way to determine quality of the thing, is to apply excessive force to it. If it remains undamaged, then it is a good thing.
2017 BMW X1 2.0TD xDrive25d xLine 4WD 5dr...
I am buying it soon 🙌. 231 bhp of pure fun 😁.
Rizer how was it??? do u recommend it?
is it a silent refined car?
Love this guy - he gives the best reviews!
What year is the car he’s reviewing??
So I may ask, what is the big feature BMW has, without RWD?
Please make more videos! Anyway, when will there be a Q and A
Is this 2014?
Generally speaking, when the front seats are raised up, you do get improved legroom for back passengers but you also decrease their visibility. So I think you should stop mentioning it as a positive...
another trick they use is to tilt the back seats backwards so that they can get away with sloping the roof lines. naughty... :)
how does interior quality compare to 3 series
So the 8-speed auto actually has a manual style gear-knob, or did I get it wrong? Didn't newer BMWs have an electronic gear selector?
Who's here 2023
Just bought this so need to know everything bout it 😂😂😂
2024 fam
will you make a video about the new vw tiguan? i wonder that because vw scandal
What year model is this?
What year is this x1 guys? Gracias in advance
I always wonder where they get these cars? For review purposes
Could you please make a video on the new Mercedes Benz GLC
That was the button for the front parking sensors, not the back ones. The back ones are always on.
Will X1 ever be electric?
Would a non-folding wheelchair fit in the back?
For an SUV it is stunning!
Love the humour! Great job!
Adjustable rear seat, an option? Why?
I wonder if its better to get the X1 or the 3 series GT. I heard their height difference is small and that the X1 is not essentially an SUV. I still rate this car though, its a pity in South Africa there is no Xdrive model with manual transmission.
Wow Bmw have really pulled it out of the bag with this new X1 dammmn does it look seriously sexy!
I just wondered, how firm the ride on this car, i really love the looks but i prefer car with comfortable ride (at least as soft as toyota avensis)
just love your reviews man so well done and refreshing. i hope you can do them forever :-)
I don't want to be a bother but can you please do a review of the new mini clubman
Colour 'touchscreeen'?
Best reviewer indeed
Everything was perfect until you said at the end...."Based on the MINI, front wheel drive as standard...."
Get the AWD version, then...
João Soares Making a BMW 4x4 is not an improvement like it is for other car companies.
Is this jeep in video 2014
Comical at the end! Thanks for the review!
I find the seats on this car very narrow when I test drove it. Certainly narrower than my F30.
Please don't do visibility test with GoPro headcam while driving. Looking over your shoulder while driving curvy road is simply not safe. Besides, while vehicle isn't moving you will have a chance to better showcase car's visibility.
BMW Yeti
I didn't really find the old X1 ugly. The new definitely looks much better. It is taller and it looks like a real small SUV. The old one looks like an estate.
Mat is a bankrobber??? explains the tights hahah
Mat Is The Best And So Lucky, He Has Inspired Me,He Is Also Very Hard Working, Your My Faviourite Mat, Thanks For Being Mat Watson!
why?
whats the made year of this x1?
Q3 and GLA looks cheep copy of audi and merc but the BMW looks like a baby X5
Mat what is youre car i wounder ? :)
Limousine? I don't guess...
sad to know that sooner or later there will be be no more rwd other than the s class or the 7 series
Good video Matt.yeah for me I think buying this over a 3 series could make sense. (unless it was a M3/4 you were after....obviously)
Gotta be the best crossover only if price is not that high
Thanks for uploading on my Birthday!
that ending though LOL
I have to give props to BMW for this redesign. The look is significantly better than the previous generation.
Can you do the new Honda HRV please
Touch screen? :P
Oh wow im surprised they have reclining, sliding rear seats and easy access buttons for folding the seats down. These features weren't included in the 2017 X5 smh..
One of the best of the best suv loved it.👌👌👌
if that gopro mount around Mat's head had been any lower it would've been a blindfold
Actually there is LESS space between the front and rear wheels in the new X1. The new X1 WHEELBASE is SHORTER. However there is more interior space because of the transverse engine layout making the engine bay smaller.
Great car! BMW never got to make a X3 look great.. At least for me...
X please with the 3rd row
well i'm gonna send a pair of tights to the car buyer office addressed to Matt for xmas
AWD isn't just for off-roading. In the rain it provides better handling and with Britain's increasingly volatile whether I think that would be a good thing. But PERMANENT AWD. Not this part-time stuff... Any BMW SUVs have proper AWD?
I really think the X1 looks amazing, except for the windscreen angle. I think it's to horizontal. Anyone who agrees?
Carbuyer, brought to you by CocaCola Zero
Plz review the new Cadillac ATS V sedan
good review! entertaining and informative :3
Awesome 👍 👍 BMW X1 review .
Impressive until FWD. But then those that buy an X1 aren't regular BMW owners I'm guessing or BMW owners looking for a plus one for the family fleet.
2:22 what was that ?
Excellent review as always. Matt rocks. The x1 looks similar to x5. A bit more classy too. Would defo go for the x1.
I recently got an 2019 sdrive, petrol.
Nice car. But it IS a firm ride, and my wife and I found it quite bumpy, not so smooth. Also fuel economy is a bit meh. 42.mpg.

My Audi A3 can do around 7 to 10 days. I can drive to London and back 60 miles on a full tank and that fuel gauge won’t even move. It’s Petrol.
The X1 is much bigger than the Audi
So this review basically states that BMW is the best because of the many storage bins.
It's so cute. Why did they have to screw everything for a little bit more interior space? Of course it looks better. It's 2017., plus it also costs more, so they afforded to put better materials. im seeing the awesome bmw x1
naah..this means that the audi q3 is the better looking..better handling and price wise cheaper..still it may be a bit smaller but it has a better ground clearance and at the end you get that premium audi interior quality...
That parcel shelf is now scratched!
