I Have followed Johns story for a while now. Read Alone at Dawn. As an Infantryman for 8 years (2001-2009) and Iraq War Veteran, the fact that Britt Sablinski got the MOH that really should have been Chapmans… and YEARS went by before this ever came to Light. Its very troubling. No I was not Spec Ops. Yes I was an Infantryman, Yes I spent 12 months in combat operations in the Baghdad AO in 2005, and as Scared as I ever was, as much as there was times I wanted to just Not suit up and go out, I did it every time.
I can sit here and say you NEVER leave a fallen Comrade. Period.
Let alone 2 of them.. (Seals had no idea if Neil Roberts was alive either). And they Left the Mountain without Either of them. Shameful. Fucking shameful.

Britt Sablinski should have not accepted that medal. Other than they get got run out of the objective by the enemy, I do not see the reason he got it. Ok, so he led his team off the "x" and away from the objective (while leaving a live teammate alone). How is that different from what many infantry combat veterans did over and over again in countless firefights in Iraq and Afghanistan? Britt got it, simply so that the SEALs did not look like cowards in contrast to what Chapman did in the face of the enemy. Downright shameful exercise in politics.

Yes, absolutely 'Alone At Dawn" is a story that needs to be told, but why was Chapman alone? The answer to that is why I don't see how the DOD let's this story be told.

So to preface, I’m a prior enlisted Army Infantry Officer. Now that I have climbed the ranks and gotten to a position that I can actually see the corruption and fucking craziness that goes on in the higher echelons of the military, it’s mind boggling.
Like he was saying, people trying to thwart the CCT’s MOH. I’ve seen it first hand. Not the Medal of Honor, but other awards and commendations that were truly earned on a combat deployment. I saw us internally fight a higher headquarters for our Soldiers to get the recognition they deserved.
Like he was also saying, it was no secret what they had gone through. We had literal unbiased intelligence reports, sworn statements, the whole 9, just for SEVERAL high ranking officers to refute and dismiss these events. Like for no apparent reason. Everything was written correctly and actually happened. And I know of this happening all across the Army during GWOT. It is absolutely insane to me.
In this instance, ITS ON VIDEO, and they still have the fucking audacity to fight it. It is what it is. What happened, happened.

Another is because the individuals in question is NOT a PILOT. The USAF has problems highlighting their enlisted people. I also know that there are some pilots who don't get very much of a highlight for great stuff they've done...I'm pretty sure that in one case it's because he's not an ACADEMY GRAD. The previous Air Force leadership for 10+ years after Chappy died on Roberts Ridge did absolutely nothing to advance a MOH or even investigate whether he deserved the Medal of Honor.
You are dealing with an Air Force leadership that routinely denied Bronze Stars with Valor for Combat Controllers,Pararescue (PJs) and TACPs while giving Bronze Stars to officers pulling staff / desk duty in Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and on FOBs/COBs in Iraq and Afghanistan who never even were involved in any kind of combat.

Why the Air Force sucks at recognizing their own?
That answer is pretty basic, but shrouded in Air Force secrecy.
The Air Force is ALL about pilots. The saying in the Air Force is "The pilot is God's gift to the Air Force".
It is a pilot's Air Force.
In fact, the only Chief of Staff of the Air Force since it's inception in 1947 have only been pilots.
Can the Air Force truly say it is being led by the very best and brightest it has to offer if they are only selecting from the pilot pool?
So when it comes to the higher decorations for anyone NOT a pilot, there is this massive disconnect. The pilots who run the Air Force can't grasp what a ground guy in the Air Force even does. Sure, they have a general knowledge, but the specifics and the details elude them. Most can't even tell you what the pipeline is to become a PJ/CCT, etc. They have been pumped for so long that THEY are the heroes of the Air Force, that THEY simply can't let that 'hero mantle' go. They can't grasp that heroes actually exist outside the cockpit.

8:56 Secretary of the Airforce Debbie James, one thing about the Government and Military is she was not worried one bit about giving MOH’s to retired or fallen soldiers, it was her job to help with recruitment especially within a branch like the Air Force where most people don’t put Special Operations and Air Force in the same sentence even though they have CCT and they also have other tough jobs but regardless a cake eater like her has one thing in mind and that’s helping recruitment numbers especially because these past several years, numbers have gone down drastically in recruits.

Lots of data points that indicate the Navy is out of control and a bunch if loose canons. Ships and subs burning at the dock, Navy ships running into reefs and running into large ships that should have been obvious, fantail-ing an F-35 and pursuing the video leaks more vigorously than pursuing the stupid reason (within the officer ranks) it crashed in the first please, and finally appearing to always hide the truth. Slabinski's MOH to hide the fact that they left two men on the battle field, is the most despicable act of all. Of course they fought Chapman's medal, because it pissed on THEIR narrative that he was dead. Thus they didn't leave live men on the mountain. Navy is becoming great at hiding how much they suck...

The Air Force does suck at combat awards. I was an Air Force HH60G Flight Engineer in Afghanistan and we were told by our Commander in 2008 that even though the missions and acts we were doing on a weekly basis would have been grounds for awards back when the war started, that it was just routine now. I am not talking about routine missions. Once, our crews were prepositioned at FB Anaconda with Army SF dudes when very accurate enemy mortars starting coming in. I was in the TOC with my crew, while SF was scrambling to counterattack. I was told to take an antenna out to the mortar pits so they could communicate. I ran outside, found the mortar pit and gave them the antennae. The two dudes in the pit told me to go grab some 120mm mortars so we could start counter battery fire. So I did. We launched mortars back at the enemy and destroyed them. After we landed back at Bagram and the story got out about how I was supporting the mortar team, the talk amongst the unit was that I should get some type of recognition. I didn't care, because after that deployment was over I knew I was getting out. I had already submitted my paperwork to discharge, and my Commander knew it. He made the decision that going through the effort to write any award would be a waste of time. Our Awards and Decorations Officer, an 0-3 who I was good friends with said that was complete BS and actually wrote a line in one of my Air Medals detailing that day for posterity. TSgt John Chapman deserves every bit of the Medal of Honor, and it is criminal that it took so long.

Why wouldn't the USAF want to show the world the heroes of the USAF? It's for many different reasons...one of these is because most are enlisted people. Another is because the individuals in question is NOT a PILOT. The USAF has problems highlighting their enlisted people. I also know that there are some pilots who don't get very much of a highlight for great stuff they've done...I'm pretty sure that in one case it's because he's not an ACADEMY GRAD. Lot's of things add up to some really deserving people NOT getting much notoriety in the USAF (and in other services).
