  • Medal of Honor recipient Master Chief Petty Officer (SEAL) Britt Slabinski recounts his actions while leading a team under heavy effective enemy fire in an attempt to rescue teammate Petty Officer First Class Neil Roberts during Operation Anaconda in 2002. Slabinski’s selfless actions throughout the 14-hour battle constituted gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty. (U.S. Navy video/Released)

John A. Chapman, in my opinion, is the only man who was worthy of being awarded the Medal of Honor that day. After being abandoned by the SEALs he was attached to, and being denied the Medal of Honor for such an extended period of time, I simply find the fact that Slabinski somehow earns the credit for Chapman's actions atop that mountain to be highly disrespectful, and greatly saddening.

That would be true is that was the only factor at play. The problem people have with this is that they acted originally like Chapman was robin to his Batman bs the other way around. Further, the seals went to the DOD and tried to block Chapman from getting the medal not take away his shine.
The medal is supposed to be for efforts above beyond. His part although brave wasn’t worthy of this. His and the other seals actions post only support that.

Just to let yall know, techsgt. John a Chapman, regained consciousness and the whole time britt was on the side of the mountain johns fighting hand to hand and saving 23 soldiers lives, its literally been recorded on video from the air I encouraged everyone to watch it, the ac130 gunship was firing on the bunker while a very conscious John Chapman was inside the bunker fighting with Mujahideen the entire time, to this day Noone knows why he was able to awaken after taking two rounds to the stomach and he fought off three times that he was charged by the taliban and all three times succeeded until he left the security of the bunker to draw fire away from the ranger helicopter that was flaring to land. Chapman is the man. God rest his soul, he deserves it.

Read "Alone at Dawn" by Dan Shilling and John's Sister Lori Chapman Longfritz (comes out in June) Thank the Lord for the Predator video that showed John Chapman was alive and after the SEAL's "relocated" he single handedly fought on alone... I've read the book and have watched the Predator video.. 22 years in the military 2 tours in Iraqi Freedom... I'm comfortable with what I have seen in the video. Chapman.. after being left behind by his team mates.... regained conciseness and knocked out the first bunker solo then continued the battle after his rifle was rendered INOP by machine gun fire... he then resorted to his pistol attacking Al Qiada positions. WITH A PISTOL!!!! Predator video shows that he killed the last fighter with his bare hands. Chapman was still alive when the QRF Razor landed.. it was only after The Rangers established a hasty make shift security perimeter Chappy took out the RPG who was engaging the QRF..... TSG Chapman was then hit with small arms fire and killed..... Dont believe me.. Dont take my word.. watch the Predator video and educate yourself. You will be disgusted when you learn of the underhanded attempts the Navy did to suppress this story.. and TSG Chapman's Medal Of Honor award... Lucky the predator video saw the light of day and the FOG of war is made a little more clear... All were heroes that day.. "Slab" tells his truth.. then there is the REAL truth. Dont listen to me.... again.. google it watch the predator video and read Alone at Dawn when it hits the book shelves in June...

I agree with pretty much all you say apart from the pistol part, well according to Alone at Dawn... Page 255, “He was now going through ammunition at an alarming pace. Of the seven thirty-round magazines he started with, he was down to only a couple. And unlike the SEALs, he had no pistol secondary.”
But everything else you mention is spot on. I was just curious where you got the pistol info from as I’m currently on the last few pages of the aftermath chapter.

Please remember that none of us were there and we don't understand the immense pressure on Slabinski as a leader in Seal Team Six. Also, try to take-in the gravity of the situation. Slabinski was putting his life and the lives of his men on the line to rescue Neil Roberts, he didn't have to do that. Also, Slabinski was fighting with little oxygen at 10k feet, crawling through 3 ft. of snow, in total darkness with older night vision, after barely surviving not 1 but 2 helicopter crashes. They were crawling through the enemy's heavy machine gun fire coming from at least 2 different directions in addition to small arms fire coming from another 2 directions and it's all happening at lighting speed. I'd like to see any of you do better! Many of you are not understanding, that in this story, Slabinski skips the account of the 1st bunker, possibly because he's NOT authorized to talk about it. Thus, Slabinski is recounting the assault of the 2nd bunker from the boulder which was behind the 1st bunker that John Chapman had already assaulted in his selfless heroism. Then after 2 members of the seal team were wounded in the legs, Slabinski decides to consolidate the team downhill away from incoming fire. Remember, he is a team leader who is responsible for the lives of those wounded men. In Slabinski's defense, he was in bunker 1 when John was shot twice, he thought John was dead and the drone footage is cut when the wounded team is relocating, it DOES look like Slab, in fact, crawls back through bunker 1 just as he said! His plan was not to retreat but to get off the X so he could call in close air support. John Chapman is a brave hero but he also charged the bunker after having been told by Slabinski to stay with him right before they got off the helicopter. In the end, it was the right thing to do but it could have added to the confusion because now a team member was crossing into friendly fire. I think people are too quick to judge with only partial information. War is hell and it is very difficult to make perfect decisions under multiple sources of extreme physical, mental and emotional pressure. All of these brave men did the right thing trying to rescue Neil Roberts and each other and all of these REAL men are true American heroes. Please show some respect in your comments!

I don't know everything about the battle of Robert's Ridge but I've done a lot of research. I've seen every video regarding this battle and I've read Alone at Dawn and The Mission, the Men and Me and 2 other books about these brave heros. Slabinski is not lying, he is just not authorized to talk about certain things that happen at bunker #1. He threw the grenades and shot the 203 at bunker #2. Bunker number #1 was reinforced with logs but bunker #2 was only a tent under a tree behind bunker #1. Slab just says "the bunker" in his story and people assume he's lying because they think he's talking about bunker #1. Slab skips certain parts between John's assault on Bunker #1 and then the transition to the boulder. The drone footage is cut as well because something else happened that we are not being told. John defeated bunker #1 solo then they assaulted bunker #2 together with Slabinski. Slabinski was standing right next to John Chapman when John was shot twice in the chest. John was unconscious and Slab thought he was dead. The cia predator drone footage cuts while Slab is still in bunker #1 and resumes on the boulder. The drone footage does NOT show John being shot OR Slab's move from bunker #1 to the boulder, watch the drone footage again. Then after 2 of Slab's men are wounded in the legs, he does not retreat but gets off the x to call in close air support.
People shouldn't be so quick to judge without all the facts. Please be careful what you say about a true hero and think twice before slandering his character. You are making the same mistake as the TF-11 command who assumed control of the battle based on the limited drone footage instead of trusting Delta Pete Blader and the other CCTs on near by mountain tops for actual battlefield intel. Also, realize that this video is being presented by the Navy's TH-cam channel who edited by the Navy, they may have cut out certain details he shared. Slabinski is not the bad guy. He was following orders and is a true hero for risking his life and the life of his men to try to recover Neil Robert's. If you want to blame someone, then blame "Vic" who pushed for the summit landing when Slabinski asked to postpone the mission 24 hours. Or you could blame the TF-11 seal command at Bagram who switched frequencies in order to exclude Jimmy and Pete Blader from communications as they took over Delta's two month old operation. Blader was ordering a Spectre gun run against the 24 know Chechnian and Uzbeks that were entrenched at the summit of Takr Gahr prior to the mission. The TF-11 command canceled the ac-130h and none of that was communicated back to Slabinski's team. Read the books.

I served in the military for 6 years, all during a time of no conflict. I never had to worry about if I'd ever see my loved ones again. Every man on that mountain are heroes, because they courageously faced and fought an enemy, well-knowing they'd probably not make it out alive. Regardless of some comments on here about who the real hero is, or the criticisms of how this man handled the situation, very few can actually say they've been in that situation themselves. But to our phenomenal men and women who put themselves in the situation, because it was their duty to, and either come home wounded and broken, or didn't come home at all, remember they are all courageous and all heroes. I can only imagine in the heat of battle and fear, fire, and absolute chaos, having to make split-second decisions....my gracious, the immense pressure that is put on the leaders of these teams. Whether MCPO Slabinski handled this the way you think he should have, thank God men came off that mountain alive at all. What a tremendous burden to bear. I salute this Master Chief, and all his men, and all who go up there and do that, so that you and I can keep enjoying our lives and freedom here at home.

After watching every video about Roberts Ridge and John Chapman's incredible fight to save this guy and 23 others. It is very clear that the competition between forces (Navy vs USAF). John was not saved or even watched by his team leader. If you watch the Chapman video it also shows Britt staying way back and did not do anything that relates to a Medal OF Honor. Yes he was brave and is a Hero for fighting. Brtt Slabinski looks like he was given a medal as a way to make everyone happy. They did not know about everything John Chapman had done as the film had to be fixed up over the years so you could tell what was really going on. Britt seems to tell a different story and does not give John Chapman any credit. This guy followed John for 10-20 meters but did not do anything that was as incredible as John's story. I never saw any grenades thrown by him in the clip. He moves his men to another spot so an AC-30 Gun ship could fire on the mountain top. He never says another word about John Chapman or the fact that they left him up on the mountain (John was from the USAF not the Navy Seals) Watch the video about FIRST MEDAL OF HONOR EVER CAUGHT ON FILM to watch the bravest man on the planet give his life for his brothers. Because Navy, especially SEAL Team 6, was embarrassed that their team abandoned Chapman on the mountain. If they were to admit the now proven rendition of the events that let to John Chapman's and Neil Roberts deaths were true then they would have to admit to:
      1. The SEAL command was so desperate to get into the fight the commander (Szymanski) sent in two teams that were ill prepared and ill equipt for the battle. So as they were inserting to set up recon positions they didn't listen to the Army who advised Takur Ghar was swarming with enemy. The helicopter they tried to insert with was hit with an RPG causing Roberts to fall out. He survived, but was killed almost immediately in a firefight. That's when they reorganized and went back to recover Roberts, and were shot down again leading to the battle he is talking about. So, the SEALS went in when they weren't prepared, tried to save a downed comrade, had to be saved when they got shot up (no body armor), then called for help and the team that went to save them was shot up and sustained several casualties. All because Captain Szymanski wanted HIS SEALS to get into the fight.
      2. The SEAL team, led by Slabinski abandoned Roberts and Chapman on the mountain without checking if Chapman was dead.
      3. While Chapman fought to his last the SEAL team retreated and called in air support.
      4. The SEAL team members would initially give statements that supported the official rendition of events, but several years later they refused to sign their statements and began bad-mouthing Chapman as being reckless.
      5. Now Rear Admiral Szymanski actively tried to deny Chapman's Medal of Honor award.
      6. The Navy rushed Slabinski in for a Medal of Honor even though you can see his statement, when compared to the statements of other witness and the predator drone video, contains many "inaccuracies".
      7. The Navy SEALs are so invested in presenting themselves as the ultimate warriors they are willing to deny the truth and crap on a dead hero to protect their reputations.

Its because of Coward two faced lying Polish/American Seals.
      And military politics.
If they gave Chapman the MOH at first. IT justifies that the SEALS Left Chapman for dead.
If it was justified that they left Chapman, That would make the whole SEAL's reputation go down to the crappers.
So what they did was blocked the MOH for Chapman from the Airforce. Which is something new. Since when did a Navy Branch try to Block a medal from another Branch? First time this happened.
And instead give the MOH to this lying scumbag Slabinski.
And see how their name have similarities?

It's easy to miss what he says at the beginning; "Through a series of changes to the mission, we wound up landing on top of the mountain." That was the horrifically bad decision which led to the needless deaths of good men. The complete story was told in the book, "Not a Good Day to Die" by Sean Naylor, a journalist and author who was embedded with Task Force Dagger. The SEALs' plan was to land on the only viable LZ on that side of the mountain. Because it was so obvious, the Taliban had surrounded it with bunkers and fighting positions for mortars, heavy machine guns, and RPGs. The Army unit whose operation they were supporting had detailed intelligence about it, but SEAL teams (much less DEVGRU) don't feel the need to talk to conventional units. However, their JSOC LNO did, and tried to warn them, but was ignored. Not only did Roberts and Chapman die because of the SEALs' typically poor mission planning, but an Army quick reaction force was rerouted to save Roberts, and unwitting tried to land IN THE SAME KILL ZONE! The helicopter was immediately hit and disabled, and several soldiers died before even having the chance to get to cover. Less than a year later, another poorly planned and executed SEAL mission would lead to the largest single loss of life (22 dead) in the history of US Special Operations Command. This time, the entire rescue force was killed, along with the helicopter crew. Again, the SEALs managed to turn a horrible fuck up into an epic story of bravery. Maybe you've seen the movie. It's called "Lone Survivor".

What Slabinski is talking about, (when he said that he engaged a bunker with his grenades) is the second bunker. By the time Slab was in hunkered engagement, bunker 1 was taken out by Chappy. The first grenade was ineffective because it sunk in the heavy snow and made a slight puff (visible on the drone footage). Second grenade fell right behind the bunker and had no effect. You have to keep in mind that they were being engaged for 4 directions, not just from 1 bunker. 6 guys effectively engaging 2 bunkers with 8+ fighters in them plus being engaged by scattered hajis doesn’t leave much room to maneuver. I’m not trying to defend anyone here but hearing people call a real warfighter a liar rubs me the wrong way. What I’m really not ok with, is navy trying to deny Chappy his rightfully earned medal. Fights through the ambush to save Brennan who was being carried off by the Taliban. Unfortunately Brennan was dead, but still retrieved by Guinta. Cause, action, and outcome.
Not taking anything away from Slabinski, but he broke some cardinal rules as a leader. The real problem lies within the Navy and SEAL command for 1. Arrogance in thinking their enemy is less superior. 2. Not willing to fight as one team. They are known not to care about interservice attachments. 3. Navy and SEAL command trying to block Chapman's nomination.

This is what I find interesting. Is that the Navy Seal community has always prided themselves on not talking about their missions because they don’t do it for the glory they do it for the country. And what I find more and more these days, are Navy SEALs talking about their mission and trying to gain recognition for what they did either as a team or as an individual. So here is another former Navy seal, seeking recognition for what he did. And that’s pretty sad

Let’s take a moment to thanks those who risked and lost there life’s that day, Roberts, Chapman, some rangers and another cct. I give credit for slab going back up there for Roberts and that’s it. That drone footage exposes a lot of inaccuracies in slabs story. He followed Chapman into that first bunker, only stepping in the bunker after it was cleared by chappie. I may be wrong but I saw no explosions in that second bunker so doesn’t appear he threw any Grenades. Roberts body and Chapman who he though was dead was right next to him, why not retrieve 1 if not both of them. After his machine gunner gets hit he pulls out and contrary to what he says, he did not check on chappie yet he hi tailed it out of there. Slabs actions later on in his career got him kicked out red squadron, team 6. So I find it hard to believe anything says after him saying he went back up for Roberts. Watch the drone video, it’s the cleanest footage but it is clear as day the most of his details about what happened are false

You sure do have all the answers you go run a seal team in extreme weather conditions in a suicide mission. They are special forces not super humans. And it isn’t call of duty. I watched the video footage and when they were in bunker 1 Chapman wasn’t moving for a while before they pulled out with multiple wounded. He still had other men he needed to lead and protect. Until any of us have been in the situation our opinions don’t fucking mean a thing.

    • @brucebain3405

@@Darknight-vr9ft first and foremost the seals and they’re own command where so gun ho to get in the action they did not read any action reports or briefings on what was going on in the battle field. They saw the oda’s and Cct’s getting after it and they rushed a battle plan and chose the worst position to set a op at. That op was compromised by enemy and any sf team on the ground knew that prior to the kick off of the operation. Seals neglected to request and share intel with any other forces on the ground. Seems a bit arrogant to me. We all know how the mission went down. But till this day the the highest command of the seals have been trying to dismiss that they left chappie behind. Now if other cct’s on a mountain miles away heard chappie over the net don’t u think slab heard it too ???. I get it slab was in hard a place leaving chappie but he is clearly lying about stuff when u pair up his interview about what happened compared to the drone footage. Like him making the initial assault instead of Chapman. I get it, it’s war and bad shit happens. But dnt lie about another mans work. Not to mention slab clearly said he checked on chappie not looked over before he made his retreat. You clearly see slab walk/run near chappie and FIFi. Never once do u see him check. Dnt say that u did and dnt.

This guy stayed twenty feet behind John and didn't rush to the bunker until John overran it and killed the 2 enemy. He just stayed directly behind, not moving, while John was engaged. Drone footage tells the whole story.

Slabinski’s MoH report makes it seem like he was next to Chapman the whole time charging those bunkers while the drone footage shows only Chapman. The Seals reached Chapman, got wounded, and retreated, Chapman was then taking all the enemy fire because he was still alive all the way up to when the Rangers saved them. This guy did nothing more heroic than anyone else that day, except Chapman.

The MoH must feel very heavy around Slabinski's neck knowing that the true hero of Roberts' Ridge was John Chapman, the Air Force CCT that his team left for dead, who fought alone against vastly superior forces into the next day. Say his name; TSgt. John Chapman.
