      Its not exactly representative tho. Since its Type S Euro Accord then it should be 3.0R Spec B and specificly late/facelift model. It also has multifunction steering wheel, better handling because it benefits from Sti derived suspension and bilstein dampers. EUDM market only ever got 6MT on Spec B alone.

    Hello there Liam, I drive a 97 Honda Accord Wagon MT and I have a question for you because i am having a hard time choosing between a Subaru Outback 2.5 vs Accord CL7/9 Wagon as a new safer child-carrier addition to my old daily. I would love to own a Subee for the off-roadability but while driving a Subee Forester i have noticed the same gearbox/ heavy clutch issue that you mentioned here and i am confused about my choice. Are all Subarus so clutch heavy? I am also considering buying a AT or just buy a Honda and fit it with a 1.5-2 inch lift kit for better ground clearance. What’s your opinion on that? Thanks and keep them coming!

    • @KiwiCarLife
      @KiwiCarLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not all that I've driven have been clutch heavy, however they are not easy cars to drive. They just generally feel quite lurchy and nasty at low speed in particular. Not great for traffic. The Accord will be a much better road car, subie good for offroading obviously but it depends how much offroading you actually want to do.

    I got a Legacy 3.0R SpecB, they certainly get under your skin - also for some odd reason I too had a Honda Accord K24 before this Subaru, and a Merc CL55 AMG if that matters but the Subaru is just simply outstanding - handling, performance and that gearbox just rifles through gear changes, also its old school with mechanical AWD and 50:50 bias, none of this fancy electronic rubbish on modern cars which take away all the aspects of getting involved with the car itself. The steering like the Honda is hydraulic which is another big plus, almost every car now has electric PS.
    its very much a drivers orientated car and I never have the radio on - I prefer the engine note.

    • @KiwiCarLife
      @KiwiCarLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Definitely agree about the engine note and the mechanical feeling of the car. And the gearbox ratios are simply fantastic and really make it an enjoyable car to drive. However in this particular one I thought the steering was very numb, the handling not very confidence inspiring (always wanted to understeer much before I expected it to) and the gearbox feel wasn't very nice... But I'm sure all of these faults I discovered are fixable and in that case it would be outstanding! The engine is a masterpiece

    Definitely an interesting review, love the content dude! Bit confused by the Legacy's handling woes. The 3.0r i've got is the manual spec b variant with the bilstein b6's running on the oem bridgestones. Not sure if this corresponds with your example... Mine certainly doesn't struggle for grip unless I'm really hammering the throttle on the corners, but you are correct in that it's understeer city. Had the back kick out a few times from a stop in the wet, but usually it's just very predictable understeer.
    One thing I'd note is that the mod support for the 3.0r is very limited unless you do a lot of custom work, still though, could never stop loving the sound enough to move back to a 4 cylinder.

      Also maybe clutch needs a bleed good clean fluid makes a difference, gearbox also should have good fluid, I use Motul some swear by redline cocktail, I have an H6 Blitzen AVCS wagon, def doesn’t suffer grip, I’ve kept up with sport hatch’s no problems on some of NZs nasty windy roads even when my brakes were getting bit hot, eg Arthurs pass west coast side on the big downhill will test any car handling and brakes, that got a bit hairy, but was still on the tail of a hatch turbo much much later model car than mine. Just saying sounds like something a bit off with that car, I’d be checking bushes, the stock Subaru sway bars imo are way too small on the Subarus in general, some Whiteline or EiBach make a huge difference. depends what you want though comfort or stability. Stock Subarus tend to be on the comfort side and the Legacy aimed at that even more. Interesting comparison though.

    • @xrand0mx
      @xrand0mx ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A set of headers absolutely transforms them. Factory headers are rubbish and almost always end up tripping the knock sensor meaning the cars ECU pulls a bunch of timing out, turning them into a 120kw slug. Aftermarket headers fix this issue, and sound way better as a bonus.
      Handling wise, try and drive an AWD like a FWD, and you'll get exactly the behaviour you see in this comparison. In AWD, Brake late, go in wide to create a late apex and sharp turn-in. Gas on hard immediately after turn-in and let all four wheels pull and push you out of the corner. When done properly this is rather satisfying and eliminates much of the understeer woes people complain about with AWD cars. Legacies in particular respond well to good rubber, stiffer endlinks and upgraded swaybars

      @@KiwiCarLife Shifter feel can be dramaticly improved with STI factory Short throw kit for all 6speed linkage subarus and it should feel as good as Honda too. Subaru just went with more cushy feeling one because...luxury i guess. All of the issues can be modded away in these tbh, then they become perfect. Even weight, since 18" rims especially facelift ones are quite extremely heavy. Dropping it down a size and getting and buffing up the sidewall profile to 50(keeps the radius the same as 18" on 45 profile)will drop the weight quite well and it will be all in unsprung mass, then exhaust modding can drop it further so it even can cross the 1500kg line even in wagon version. it also can fit 225/50 too so wider and even taller tyre for comfort and it will grip better.

    Considering an AT legacy with si-drive and similar mileage now. Will the difference between automatic VTD against the manual viscous make the handling and turning better? Anyway rather informative video!

    • @KiwiCarLife
      @KiwiCarLife  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you get a pre face-lift automatic the transmission is quite sloppy, previous owner of this manual one had an auto and it was very unresponsive. On the other hand, the facelift legacies with autos rev match downshifts and aren't as bad

      @@KiwiCarLife the Euro R transmission will bolt onto the K24 and will give you the shorter gear ratios you’re looking for. Only problem is that 6th gear will also be shorter so cruising RPMs on the highway will be higher. To solve that, you can swap the 6th gear from the CL9 to the CL7 gear box. None of this is cheap to do unfortunately. 😅

      @@KiwiCarLife a cheaper solution would be to find a used RSX Type S gear box and swap gears 2-5 to obtain the more aggressive gearing. Since the tranny will be open, might as well throw in a LSD. Btw, here’s a great reference for all of the K Series gear ratios. Not sure what’s available in your neck of the woods.

    I actually own a Subaru Liberty (Legacy) 3.0 spec b and it definitely takes off well plus the handling is awesome but it’s probably due to coil overs.... the only complaint I really have is the auto trans can limit torque on steep inclines oh and the fuel usage is really bad I average about 12L/100kms

    Good review.
    Having owned a 3.0r Spec B wagon with the manual box and currently owning a CL9, I prefer the CL9 for daily duties. The Accord has a nicer driver space and it’s slightly larger. Honda just gets the driver controls right.
    The 3.0R has terrible throttle pedal tuning, and the fuel economy is rubbish and must take 98 (they ping on 95 even). The legacy’s shifter can be vague and somewhat floppy once the shifter bushings wear out, replacing the bushings makes a massive difference. A rear sway bar and whiteline ALK is transformative to most Subarus- it really improves the turn in and feel, the factory bushings have a lot of compliance built in to them. Subaru tends to set their cars (including the sti) up for understeer out of the box for safety. The 3.0 just uses too much fuel for what it’s doing, although it’s quite linear and smooth.
    A legacy with the twinscroll engine and a tune is a far better car, better fuel economy around town and more potential.
