I am a wildlife photographer. I like ON1 Photo Raw 2025 for denoise, dynamic contrast effect, HDR effect, custom vignetter. I especially like the masking...depth masks, subject AI based masks, and luminosity masks.
Great review. Thanks. I agree with the results of the Generative AI features, need much improvement. I tried it a few times and it was a complete failure. The other new features seem worthwhile.
In the depth mask, you painted more masking to make further adjustments. However, from what I understand, you can use the sliders to increase and decrease the white and black areas, thus without painting in or out, at least not initially.
It’s a good update with the exception of the Generative Ai features. I still pay the $10 for Photoshop so I would just kick over the PS to that kind of work. I think for many, paying another subscription for Gen AI is a killer for many. It’s too bad ON1 didn’t work a deal with the cloud AI company. Maybe just pay as you go instead of a subscription. All the other features are great. The hope is ON1 will continue to improve the internal Gen AI feature.
You are right about working a deal with an AI company. Otherwise, they need to build their own cloud-based generative AI software. The local Gen AI isn't truly Gen AI if it isn't being battle-tested against millions of other photos on the cloud continually.
@@aperlust Totally agree with you. ON1 is a small company compared to Adobe that’s for sure. I just won’’t use ON1’s Gen AI. Since I would have to upload to the cloud to get good results, I’ll just continue my Photoshop $10/month account. I have the Photographers account. I know ON1 will continue to work on the local Generative stuff to help improve it. The rest of the update is great; however.
My understanding is it uses pre-existing data, in this case photos. This is what I was informed by another photography software company that uses gen AI. I don't believe it compares thousands of photos in real-time. I could be wrong, but feel free to enlighten me. :)
8:20 It's a bit of a shame that Generative Eraser doesn't work very well; I think ON1 was specifically trying to mimic Adobe Photoshop. It doesn't work at all on my computer: PhotoRaw does show a progress dialog with some information, but I don't get any results with my 4 GB graphics card. One reassuring thing, though: with such poor results, I'm not tempted to spend money on a more powerful GPU for my laptop. 😐
The ON1 Generative tools does need improvement. As someone else has mentioned, they just don't have the same budget as Adobe to improve it. At least their other tools work well and doesn't require a subscription.
It crashes my computer and I ain't buying another just to run one program. It's a shame because I have bee a long-time user. I'll just stick with 2024.
So what I gather from this is Gen AI is pretty much useless in ON1 but you can better results in PS😂 so what's the point of upgrading to ON1 2025 if you have PS.
Generative AI in general is a hollow sales argument. I have not seen generative AI working properly and consistent anywhere. Extra cloud service and payment is only offering a slight improvement. This product will continue to be a scam for years. 'If you pay extra - we'll fool you less,' is the business idea. But AI for denoising, sharpening and masking it very good in most cases, maybe with ON1 as one of the exceptions.

Thank you for the simple honest assessment of the generative AI crop, local is enough for my needs and there’s no need for a subscription.

Do you mean using the levels slider on the mask? Then yes, you would be correct. The advantage of painting is it's more targeted.

@@aperlustthat's not how generative AI works. Do you really think those online models do compare photos?

With an object that's reflected in water I think that may be better handled as a two step process - first the object then the reflection.
That's correct. Using layers or cloning you should be able to clean it up well. On the other hand, AI retouching can now detect reflections.

Exactly, it might be a better option for new users that want to move away from a subscription-based software like Lightroom.
🙁 paying another subscription for Gen AI Killed it For Me!
Try changing colour to black or white with the new colour wheel😂

Yes I have been fooled. The Generative AI is rubbish
Its kinda strange that the eraser function works much better on my samsung A52, then here in this program...
Same here with Photoshop and Lightroom mobile on my iPhone
Not a bad update, but not a fan of needing another account and pay to use tools
I bought 2025, most things are ok but the sky swap no longer works.
I'll have to check out the sky swap
