#QuantitySurveyor is the profession in the Construction Industry that deals with the preparation of BOQ, Tender Quotation, Bill preparation, Estimation of Resource which is to be deployed at the site.
#QuantitySurveyor works in different phases of the project which leads to the successful completion of the project with desirable calculated profit.
A different phase of projects are :
1. Before Tendering
2. During / After Tendering
3. Before Construction
4. During Construction
5. After Construction
Role and Responsibilities of Quantity Surveyor in a different phase of the project :
1. Before Tendering: A quantity surveyor from the client-side prepare the budgeting sheet and BOQ based upon the drawings and DAR. Qs do the analysis of the rate which is to be quoted in the BOQ as a client rate.
2. During / After tendering: Quantity Surveyor from contractor side will do estimation and costing, budgeting depending upon contractor’s Market rate and with Tender Drawings following to do rate analysis which enables the contractor to bid their tender ( Quotation of rate against client items rate or BOQ)
3. Before construction: Quantity surveyor from contractor side, will do Real-time Estimation of 3M - RESOURCE ( Material, Manpower, and Machinery) which is to be deployed at the side based upon the GFC Drawings / Revised drawings provided by the client to the final contractor. This will be followed throughout the progress of the project with different work orders.
4. During Construction: The quantity surveyor will prepare all types of bills for claiming the amount invested at the site for recovery . that bill will be prepared according to CPWD Norms, IS CODE 1200 for measurement and deductions.
The quantity surveyor will do profit and loss analysis which is to be calculated throughout the progress of work/project.
5. After construction: The quantity surveyor will also generate the report of the project from the beginning of the project to finishing of the project with respect to cost variance etc.

Definitely you can work as free Lancer to Estimate and cost for multiple projects .
If you want to start your own company you should have skills of estimation, tendering, planning and management too.
