  • This video explains the need to close your eyes during every type of yoga practice so that you can discipline your senses, and through this, discipline the mind. The senses determine how the mind works, and it is through the senses that you EITHER lose most of your energy (going out through the eyes) OR become grounded and tranquil (by withdrawing the senses from external stimulation). Your body functions according to your mind, so a disciplined mind integrates the mind/body energies. If the mind is continually in the past or in the future, the energy patterns become either dull or over-active. It is only when the mind is grounded in the present that you can feel peaceful, and in your yoga practice this is facilitated by closing the eyes. A disciplined mind also develops focus, because when the mind is depressed or stressed it's divided into many places and is weak; but through closing the eyes you can minimise the effect of the senses and this prepares your mind for deeper concentration. It makes you mentally strong so you can face the difficulties and challenges of life more spontaneously, because the mind is more focused.
