    Hi Jake, looks to be a big project for sure. Looking at how the frame drops off at the front that shouldn’t be a problem at all. They sure stuffed a lot of the engine under the cab! I wonder how a guy would do the overhead valve adjustment. Unless they put removable engine cover in the middle between the seats. I imagine with your climate down there they had to put a lot of insulation to keep the heat out. That truck is going to be a monster horsepower wise. Hopefully you’ll be able to do something to keep the frame rails from separating in the future. Here in the states they’ve tried to get away from the double frame by going to a bigger thicker single frame but you still see guys getting full double frame on many heavy haul and off road trucks. Be a really cool truck when you get it done! Be a great watch. Stay cool

    • @dieseldownunder.
      @dieseldownunder.  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      It is abit of a task that’s for sure! I see some guys in the US that mainly replace frame rails and seem to be quite good at it! Yeah it’s not the nicest thing to work on from a maintenance perspective, the “dog house” in the floor/firewall is removable and that’s basically how you would work on the rear 2-3 cylinders from inside the cab so it’s not as nice to work on as a long hood Pete or Kw.
      I’ll definitely be adding some insulation to the cab while I can get to everything and making sure the AC is in good shape!
      I don’t think the rails will ever get this bad again as its days of working hard around the clock will be over atleast while I own it.
      I’m very excited to take it for a drive it will have more than enough power for me😂

      Jake & Dad doing a meticulous job well planned out and then implemented, do the job once do it right don't cut the corners others do due to time crunches etcetera, customers ringing wanting their truck back on the road yesterday or chasing up parts for the job waiting for them to turn up getting on with other tasks working in all sorts of directions not really a good way to run a business and I've seen a few like this. As your taking time to do this spot on right going to be one of the best SAR'S kicking around once finished.

      @dieseldownunder.  6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Hey Don thankyou I appreciate it! Yep 100% I hate doing things twice so if I can do it as good as I can the first time I’m happy there’s always things along the way I realise I should have done different but it’s a good learning experience!
      100% when I was an apprentice I had to roll around under the trucks and hot wash them and I’d spend all day under one truck getting it clean enough to work on and I think that scared me a little bit😂 so now if I have to wash somthing it needs to be lifted up off the ground so I can walk under it!

      @Not_Built-Right , thanks mate nothing ever goes to plan but I usually have a way how I’d like to do things in my head! There’s always people in the real world putting pressure on to get things done and I have a hard time saying no which can make it difficult but I do my best. I’m abit OCD with the work I do on my trucks I like to do it right the first time, I’ve already learnt that cutting corners rarely pays off in the long run. My guess why locked up the bores fill of water it locks engine up you can't compress water
    Seen people try to tow start engines like this break the crank as it cat compress the water and snaps the crank
    Only way is to drain the water from bores and if not rust solid they'll turn over sometime if bore are free you can un stick a engine

    I dont unerstand "more smokey at idle with intercooler". Can any body explain why that may be?

    • @dieseldownunder.
      @dieseldownunder.  10 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

      @@jethrot100 450 and 525hp kt engines have higher compression pistons than the 600hp models, so at an idle the engine with the lower compression pistons struggles to burn all its fuel. the after cooler helps somewhat in that aspect being that an Aftercooler will only ever bring the air to the same temp as the coolant which for example may be 70-80° so at an idle it will actually be warming up the air that’s going into the engine helping the engine burn abit cleaner. I’m sure others will chime in and may be able to explain a little better but it’s basically than an Aftercooler will warm up the air going into the intake and an intercoooler will bring the air down to the same as the outside air temp

    They must have been self inspections for years on that chassis, don’t think that would have made it thru RMS heavy inspections. What was the tare on that prime mover everything is heavy as on it ?

    • @dieseldownunder.
      @dieseldownunder.  7 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Being in vic it hadn’t had an inspection as we don’t have yearly inspections like nsw do and before that it was in WA I’m not sure if they have yearly inspections but I’d say that’s how it went undetected for so long, I havnt had this on a weighbridge and there is no tare on it but I’d say full of fuel it would have to be 12T? I’ll report back when I know for sure!

      That’s a very good point and I did contemplate doing that, reasons I didn’t were, it will never do the amount of work these days that it would have done for the last 30 years, paint has come a long way form the 80s so I’m hoping it is more corrosion resistant, and I wanted to keep the truck original without having to go through any extra steps of engineering ect if I do another rail replacement in the future I would give thicker rails a go👌🏻

    I just finished tearing down an 8V92 that I found some of the same looking thin brass/copper flakes in the pan. It ended up being a main bearing that delaminated from the steel backing shell, fourtunately it didn't damage the crank.
    I'm surprised that the rust jacking is such an issue there, what would be the cause? We have it bad here in Canada due to the salt spread on the roads in the winter to melt snow and ice.
