    Thanks for a great video and update 👏👏 shame it couldn’t have been saved as a railway but it’s better to have the greenway than being built on and lost forever.

      The one thing that gets me is how there are some parts of the route that has had private development on it despite the fact it's still owned by Irish Rail, it was a similar situation on the Tralee to Fenit line as well

    Thanks for keeping us posted. The outcome is very handsome. Almost O T T and more like a road with no cars than a greenway. I wonder how the disabled will use it . Electric wheelchairs perhaps. Please fly over on a fine Saturday in May to see what use is being made of it. Text book outcome by recent graduates from the school of rural planning with generous funding.

    While it is a shame to think what could have been achieved with a commuter train-line from Youghal to Cork, we can think of what will be with the tourism boost along this wonderful coastline.

    With East Cork expanding the railway line should have been reopened and you could still have the bicycle track beside it. Another waste of money as usual. If the line was rebuilt east Cork would see massive improvements. Another belly full of millions spent which is nothing unusual for Ireland. Add it to the list lads!!

      how this was allowed to happen should be criminal. The old railway should have been restored and electrified and a proper commuter town plan for Killeagh, Mogeely, Ypughal and Castlemartyr be drawn up. A greenway should have been created from Youghal through Redbarn, Knockadoon, Garryvoe, Ballycotton, Cloyne, Ballinacurra, and back into Midleton but that would have taken time, money, and planning which the government or the councils didn't want

    • @jankford
      @jankford หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@johnmoynihan5390 That would have taken Billions and people still wouldn't have used the train. Thousands of cars pass midelton every day and don't use its train service.

    Well made and edited video. A National shame this railway has not been put back into service for Cork commuters and reducing road CO2. Good to see most of the crossings are now over bridges, so when sense prevails and this daft greenway is ripped up too facilitate rail once again at least they won't have many crossings to manage making the rail restoration more economic. There are two great greenways in Ireland, Westport and Waterford. Both incredible economic successes and with incredible scenery, who wants to cycle 20km along boring hedgerows or through featureless wetlands. Same with the Mullingar to Athlone greenway bog boring and an economic failure. Ireland needs to restore more rail connections for our economy, diversification away from Dublin area, and quality of life. The strategic all island rail review recommends ripping up some of the stupid greenways and restoring to rail. Look at the success of phase one of the western rail corridor, after a few years of minimal pax numbers there is now so much demand they have to timetable more trains. At least Foynes line restoration is underway, and plans to reinstate mullingar to Athlone on the board with the greenway to go.

      @ Yes I understand the benefits of greenways and cycle greenways, but there are greater benefits for more people returning this line to active rail use. Especially in this era of urgent climate action by taking thousands of cars of the commuter route to cork city, and improving quality of life for people who live in Youghal but work in or near Cork city.

    Youghal isn't the same since they took perky bears away from its original location, man it was so great with the spiral stairs overlooking the beach, now what's there, horrible apartments...will for sure be using this new lane for a good cycle though! Would be better if you had the ghost train and corkscrew slide out the back of perks to look forward to though 😢😂

      They have no intention of reopening the track to Sligo. The north west is currently in the bottom 7% of regions in the EU for infrastructure. There is no funding coming for the track beyond Claremorris and the N17 scheme was killed by Eamonn Ryan.

      Reopening Athenry to Claremorris makes sense to me, but Claremorris to Sligo would be a much bigger challenge. Even when it was first built, it was built to a poorer standard, so you'd bearly be starting from scratch if you were to decide to re-open it.

    It’s clear from the design of this (very expensive) greenway that they’ve made it very prohibitive to reinstate a railway. While IÉ may say it’s technically possible to have both side by side, the design here hasn’t incorporated that. What IÉ are not saying is what it would cost. This is what will make it prohibitive to reinstate. Those narrow bridges look too narrow for rail traffic, all the stations would need to be totally ripped up again,the alignment straightened where the greenway serves trees or trespassing. The cost will be significant. It’s highly doubtful the locals would allow this fabulous amenity to be ripped up and reinstated 10 metres to the left, that might take another 5 years. What politician is going to agree to that.

    Great video and well presented. but.........
    The buses dont come, if and when they do, the drivers' mood is often the deciding factor as to whether they let our kids on or not, some have an onboard card machine, some don't, drivers just shut the doors rudely no matter the circumstances for the kid that day ( one day my son was sitting a LC exam in the city ) its a disgrace. What we really needed was a commuter train, end of. This will not be widely used, and although beautiful NOW, it won't be for long, and it'll be nothing but a hot bed for anti-social activity. I note there's no lighting on it within a few meters outside the towns - how long before the first SA with easy routes for escape? It's more than a missed opportunity but a complete disaster, in my humble opinion. 😢 all of that without ever mentioning the expense...... 😮
