That movie bombed at the box office, won no Oscar, yet 30 years on, is still viewed as one of the greatest movies ever made.

When it first came out it received mixed reviews, then later received multiple award nominations, including seven Academy Award nominations, and a theatrical re-release that, combined with international takings, increased the film's box-office gross to $73.3 million.

Shawshank came out the same year I finally got sober. When I saw it, the line " Get busy livin, or get busy dyin", hit me like a freight train. It was a summation of what I had been doing for a couple years with the help of so many people in the fellowship. To this day it is a summation of what is required to escape the behemoth "addiction"! This year, 2024, I will celebrate 30 years of continuous sobriety, and my life has never been better! There is so much in Shawshank that I completely relate to and experience everyday. Hope, Redemption, and Freedom! Those things are possible for us all! ✌️♥️ Mark

It's not one of my faves, though I do like it, but I don't have the urge to watch it often. It was the favorite of my late father though. He was always mesmerized by it and even though he owned the dvd he would still watch it when it showed on any TV channel.

I watched this gem of a film back in October 1994. Timecop was sold out and my former buddy and I decided to watch 'Shawshank Redemption'. We left the theater in awe. It was inspirational and an amazing film going experience. The eight people in attendance stood up and clapped after the film was over. I bragged about this movie to everyone. I have the original poster videocassette release hanging in my room. Gawd! I love this film.

Wow, that’s amazing. Imagine walking into a theatre in 1994, unknowingly about to watch one of the greatest movies of all time. That’s like a once in a lifetime experience.
Timecop was more a home VHS movie with pizza and soda. Shawshank is a film best served up on the big screen.
Shawshank changes at you get older too. The more life experience you have the more impact it has. Thats a testament to its simple truths and strong themes. It’s cinema

That movie was so beautifully done and the casting was spot on. One of my all time favorites.
My wife of 23 years passed away last year September 2nd. Whenever I would come home from work she would have this movie on so often and my guess is she watched it at least 75 to 100 times so because of that this movie is always dear to me! RIP DEAR ICIE and I'm here today because of her. I have a tribute to her on my page here.

I saw this movie after it was released. I literally walked away saying, " This is one of the best movies ever made" to this day. On or during a holiday time etc. I stop and watch. The end gets this fifty something year old man every single time 😢 . Morgan Freeman's narration. Masterclass. Salute you two
A cinematic masterpiece. The irony is that back then, I used to go to movie theaters at least twice weekly. Was unaware of this film. Nobody I knew saw it. It wasn't promoted. I didn't hear about it until 10 years later. I watched it on cable TV and was blown away. I've seen it a dozen times since. The friendship between Tim and Morgan's characters was beautiful as was their performances. I hope to view it one day on a big screen. It's a classic! ❤❤

Agreed, to say that anyone that acually watched the movie couldnt pronounse the name of the movie and thats why it had no "word of mouth" seems a little suspect. I find your observation of ("Was unaware of this film. Nobody I knew saw it. It wasn't promoted. I didn't hear about it until 10 years later." ) holds more validity in my opinion,

Absolutely one of my all-time favourite movies. Great cast, great writing, beautifully acted and directed, great cinematography. It had everything.

So great seeing them together after all these years. The movie is such a classic.
Was visiting a friend in San Francisco when this came out. We got tickets and it wasn't till about 15 minutes or so in that I realized this was based on the KIng novella. The audience was stunned, then out of nowhere the clapping started and a standing ovation broke out at the end of the film. Amazing.

No one mentions the antagonist, a 1-derful, versatile actor, Robert (Bob) Gunton, not a household name but a face that is impossible to forget since Shawshank came into our lives.
Funny you mention Gunton. Not only does he act in my favorite movie, but he also has a significant role in seasons 7 and 8 of my favorite TV show, 24. It's also interesting how his 2 roles are so different. In Shawshank, he is easy to hate, but in 24, his character is so opposite. Very likable, and really opposes any kind of corruption.
@@eaglejoe8 Oh Yes, I got him in some of my DVDs: a news anchorman in JFK, the Yankees GM in 61*, bandleader Tommy Dorsey in the Sinatra TV miniseries and the principal lawyer (Amy Adams' boss) in Trouble With The Curve, to mention a few I remember right now.
Also played Trudy's father in a Monk episode. Would know that face and voice anywhere.
Yes. A very overlooked and underrated actor.
See him in Matewan. Real POS and I think Darabont wanted to cast him cause of that role. But he was great as the captain in Demolition Man

The movie was not about a prison escape plot. Shawshank Redemption was about trust and love against all odds, in a place where trust and love rarely happen.
The ending of the movie makes the whole thing worth it! I love the way the posters in Andy's cell marked the decades.
The book/novella left it much more open and focused on the word "hope" - i.e. hope 'springs' eternal, one of the Four Seasons stories. The movie took the cheap feel-good way out in the last minute.
This one went one step further and the hope was realized. Nothing wrong with that.
Cheap? Nothing cheap about it. Deeply satisfying beautiful and hopeful, AND a big part of why it has endured.
@@lizziebkennedy7505 Deeply satisfying can equal cheap. Sometimes a key part of the definition, lol. The book ends with a deep statement on the meaning of hope WITHOUT knowing if that hope is going to be "manifest" specifically in the way that you're hoping. At the end of the movie, HOPE (the whole effing point of the story) is no longer part of the equation. If you can, find the last few lines of the book and meditate on how the movie takes a much cheaper way out to satisfy the "I want a happy ending" masses. I get the feeling if you wrote Game of Thrones Eddard Stark would still be alive, lol.

I absolutely loved Forest Gump. It was an epic film to see in the movie theater.. . Pulp Fiction was soo different at the time it blew my mind how disjointed and seamless it was at the same time. I never saw Shawshank in the the theater and it is my biggest movie regret.

My husband loved this film.
It took him 5 years for a degenerative disease to finally take him in 2023 and I have no idea how many times he watched this film. Many, many times.
I have watched it quite a few times myself over the years.
It is like To Kill A Mocking Bird or The Lord Of The Rings.
You see and contemplate on something new or maybe some little nuance you missed before.
It has a way of being timeless and, finally, when principles and right and justice finally triumph, also life affirming.
The Shawshank Redemption story is a classic of writing prowess by Stephen King and a classic of film and film making as well.
Tombstone and Shawshank. 2 movies that you have to watch if they are on while you flip through the channels. Great era

"The Shawshank Redemption" has now reached the same number of years, that Red spent in Shawshank prison. Didn't think when I saw it back when that it would become such a classic. Although I left the theater thinking: "This is the kind of film, that used to be an American classic."
Just proof having great box office numbers and winning awards means nothing. One of the only movies I can watch over and over and not get bored with it. Many I can barely see twice
That movie was simply perfection. Casting, directing, writing, every member of that crew made magic. If only that made movies like that today.

I will always remember going to a $2.50 matinee in Bradenton, FL with my parents and aunt and uncle to see this film. We all so enjoyed it and spoke of it days later. Its a film that easy to watch again.
I remember watching this film at home on video for the 1st time. I was that blown away with it that I immediately rewound the video and watched it again. Absolutely amazing film and one of my all time favourites.
Never before in history has America needed a Shawshank redemption ethos than the present one.

My father produced the first movie Morgan Freeman appeared in, another prison movie, "Brubaker".

I watched brubaker,when released many years ago,critics didn't like it,well i liked it.

My absolute two favorite movies of all time and I still watch them are:
Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile. I’m normally an action movie watcher but those 2 movie are on a different level. I think it’s a humanistic level. Great acting and an amazing story. Oh and number 3 is Forest Gump at a VERY close 3rd.
One of those has the most satisfying ending and the other one is the only movie that makes me sob uncontrollably every single time
Literally the greatest movie of all time. Perfectly cast, perfectly scripted, just magical.
My all time favorite movie from the time it came out and it will always be. I’ve been through 2 DVD’s and watch it on tv whenever it comes on and probably have watched it maybe in the high hundreds and still growing.
Exceptional film and performances. Not long after release I was in a gas station restroom in the middle of almost nowhere and on top of the paper towel dispenser was a neatly folded brand new T-shirt for "Club Zihuatanejo" in Mexico. Yes I had to take it. I wore it out years later...
I saw this movie on my first trip to NZ from
U.K. It was shown to the whole plane as ‘the movie’ after everyone’s dinner (no individual back of seat viewing screens back then!!) on the LA to Auckland leg of the journey. Awesome movie experience. I am sure everyone who saw it with me on that flight have found memories remembering their first viewing then. What a captivating story of friendship and an amazingly uplifting ending to a movie.

I saw it in the theater on day one because I had read the story in 1982 and it was on a short list of King pieces that I wanted to adapt to the screen. At the end of the movie I was crying. Because of how great it was and that I knew I could never have made this great of an adaptation myself.
I read the short story a long time ago. If I remember correctly Jake the crow died in the book. Am i right?
This is one of those very long movies which you don't feel they're that long. Watch it and rewatch it anytime. So good

Go check out the list of movies that came out in 1994 the year Shawshank was released. Wonder why it didnt win Oscars? Pulp Fiction, Gump, Schindlers List, Philadelphia, The Fugitive and The Remains of the day. Insane. I didnt even mention the blockbusters like Jurrassic Park, Speed, True lies, Tombstone etc
@mr.nobody9697 Maybe that's why the Academy increased the roster of best picture nominees from 5 to 10 some years ago. The problem now is that we rarely get a year like 1994 anymore when we have so many great films competing for an Oscar. On the flip side, many independently made movies are so well made and interesting that they sometimes blow big budget films right out of the water!
As good as it gets. This film could have been made in any era, 1930's, 40's, 50's, etc. and it would have become a classic. Every performance in it is brilliant. There's not a wasted word or moment. The culmination of it, with Morgan Freeman's timeless voice, is a sledgehammer to the heart. Beautiful writing. Pitch perfect direction. This was such a fertile time in American cinema, with so many great films in the 90's, of such variety and quality and great, memorable performances. "Shawshank" is the epitome of that. I think it's the last great era of American cinema.
I am so happy Tim mentioned Street Smart. It's a favorite of mine as well.
I think that Street Smart was Morgan’s first Oscar nomination. He was of course very good in that too. I liked his line: “Yeah well it ain’t all basketballs and dishwashers out here.”

This movie was amazing and is in my Top 5 of All Time with The Pelican Brief, The Natural, Something The Lord Made, and Steel Magnolias.

Oh this film! Anyone, everyone adores this film, especially my late father who was himself imprisoned for something he didn't do and won his appeal.

I tecall watching this in the cinema 30 years ago. Recall everyone stunned into silence at the end, some crying silent tears of joy,(including me.) Then the clapping started.
Never seen anything like that before or since. Like a spiritual experience.
Closest to that was end of Gladiator.
Amazing movie.
This was a short story written by Stephen King. I had read it, but did not know that was the movie I was watching at the theater. I kept thinking, "I knew that was about to happen," over and over, but never realized how I knew until the credits. It is one of my very favorite movies. (And I highly recommend "Different Seasons," the book that includes this story plus three other Stephen King short stories -- THREE of which were made into movies, including "Stand by Me.")
In my top five… saw it in the theater when it came out initially… watched it many times since. It’s a phenomenal movie… now a classic.
i just went to st croix and walked the beaches of sandy point. it was very cool to know the last scene was filmed there. it wasn't a normal beach. alot of elevation on the sands, currents, and when stepping into the ocean was neck high. the colors of the ocean were amazing though. if i could post pics i would
I was convinced from jump it wasn't Mexico. Adroitly, the director realized he needed the bluest, translucent water he could find. In part, made that scene. That was heaven.
They seem like pretty cool dudes. I got to meet Robbins 5 months ago and got to tell him personally how much of a favorite movie this was for me and how myself and my coworkers would often quote lines from it. He was a down to Earth guy and very soft spoken and he graciously thanked me for the compliment. Very cool for me to be able to tell him personally as most the time we don't get to tell our favorite actors how much we enjoy their work.
I actually saw this movie in the theater. I was 16, so no idea why I chose to see it but it was amazing.
The prison is a few miles from my house... just went thru it a few weeks ago. They have a great tour and museum for the movie..

This Movie was one of the greatest films of all time. The film had true emotions that were raw and it should be brought back on Movie Theaters

This is one of Stephen King's movies they got right! I love the book, and love the movie. Though the scene they discussed about the sewer tunnel was not described that way in the book. Stephen King said he wanted Morgan Freeman to be Red if the movie was made. Stephen King said he picked a few new actors in mind to be Andy, but Morgan was always written to be Red.
This and the Green Mile.
To this day, (depending on the situation) I can still hear Morgan Freeman saying "get busy living or get busy dying". Its one of my mantras! Thank you Morgan and Tim for one of the best movies of all time!! The ending was Superb!!! Blessings!
I was middle aged before I realized Morgan Freeman was Easy Reader that I'd watched as a five-year-old on The Electric Company.
Saw it in the cinema when it came out because I've been a long time Stephen King fan and knew he can write great non-horror stories like Stand By Me. Broke my heart because it was such a perfect film and only 7-10 people were watching it.
Go check out The Actor's Gang Theater if you're in LA. A great little theater with a nice little wine bar and high-quality talent. I went to a play last month that had the scene-stealing Dora Kiss (from Smile) and more. Highly recommended!
I was naked for two hours in that shower scene next to Tim. I worked on Shawshank for two months. ❤

Still THE best movie ever made!
Mansfield Prison, where it was filmed, is having a big shindig in August for the 30 Year Anniversary. Not only was the prison used but the store where Brooks and Red both worked is there and the bench where Brooks sits feeding birds. Also nearby is the cabin where the gold pro lived which is part of the property of Louis Bromfield. A lot of famous stars from thw 50s use to visit there.
This is one of those rare films where every single character was perfectly cast and everyone gave an incredible performance and combined with a timeless story and impeccable direction, the result is the perfect movie. 👍😃👍
