Cant bel;ieve I ran into this song again........... in October 2024. My oh my.... You rock gel. Thanks once again..... not only for the choice of song but by the way you are hitting them strings. Its Friday morning and you have already made my day
You seem to be high like the legend himself whenever he performes these tracks live, thanks a lot for recognising our music bro. Keep flying our Columbian brother👏
Interesting groove... It seems the chord progression is 1-4-1-5 and the base line is built around the chord tones... the 1-3-5 of each mode. I think it's the heavy emphasis on the rhythm that's key here and not so much which note is being played. Also note it's the same chord progression from start to finish. Thomas Mapfumo made amazing things using so little...
@georgekadotso5823 The mbira gets it's rhythm from the hosho in a band setting. The mbira is used primarily as a melody instrument. The rhythm was driven by the shakers (hosho). The grooves they developed on drums & bass back in the 80s worked wonderfully but I'm sure they could have done them differently. They employed a drumming technique from the rock genre that was heavy on the high hat & kick & had no off beat notes. The kick was on the 1, the 2, the 3, and the 4 (normally it's on the 1 & 3, with the snare on the 2 & 4). That drumming could easily have been changed (but still working with the hosho rhythms) and would have resulted in different bass grooves. They could also easily have changed the hosho rhythms and consequently the drum & bass and that would have given more grooves. Sorry for being "technical", but understanding these techniques is the key to progressing further & innovating beyond where the Mapfumos & Mutukudzi reached.

Bcoz it's based on the mbira rhythm and progression 😊
