Lyrics and analysis "Vanhu Vatema" (Black people), released in 1994, is a powerful rallying cry for unity among African nations. The lyrics emphasize the strength found in solidarity, urging Africans to stand together to overcome numerous challenges. It highlights the importance of unity in growing ensuring food security and achieving economic stability through concepts like a single currency. The song also addresses the divisive impact of discrimination and the need for a unified voice to be heard globally. Vakomana kana tiri tose iwe Brothers, if we stand united yahondeee ahondeeeeee (traditional chant) Tinokunda nhamo dzakawandaaaa | We'll overcome many challenges Africa kana tiri tose iwee Africans, if we stand united Tinokudza mhuri yedu yose We'll raise our families Africa kana takabatana iwe Africans, if we're united mhuri yedu yese inoguta Our families will have enough to eat kana mari yedu ikabatana iwe If we come up with a single currency Tinotenga chinhu chakakoshaa We'll buy something valuable Tikataura nezwi rimwe chete iwe If we speak in one voice Nyika dziri kure dzinotinzwa the world will hear us
And you hear South Africans saying Zimbabwe did nothing during their anti-apartheid struggles, yet he composed 2 tracks in the mid 1980s which criticize apartheid and Renamo-inspired conflicts in Mozambique. If one listens to his 1986-7 songs 'Tongosienda' which openly called for the destruction of Botha and his regime, and 'Zimbabwe-Mozambique' they could tell that we were concerned about them being under the apartheid regime, let alone this one vanhu vatema 'black people' calling for African unity.

Those days the group had two visible stars Thomas Mapfumo and Ashton Sugar Chiweshe. Ashton will never be matched on that lead guitar. Then you have one of my favorite musicians Lancelot Mapfumo. The guy OWNS the congas. He injects a flavor to the music that gives it that extra kick. This my favorite period of Mapfumo when Ashton was around. That Album is special to me. And this song's message and arrangement is up there with his best works
