Set Review hype! These are probably my favorite videos, and I love that the last few have been coming out before the prerelease just to help me get another point of view on cards I am unsure about.
Oh Thank Erebos for Evan Erwin and Brad Nelson! This is without a doubt the best Magic show on TH-cam and I have recorded every episode of these set reviews and watch them religiously. Hixus, Prison Warden might be one of my favourite cards in the set. Another complexity to it is that it doesn't just imprison one creature - it does it to all of them. The card will probably not see standard play, but I give big props to Wizards for making a very cool card here.
Katie Egervari Yeah, Hixus is my fav white card for sure. Dream scenario is getting hit with a bunch of 1/1 tokens and removing them all permanently. You still have to take the damage but, whoa.
While listening to them talking about the mythic artifact, this popped random thought into my mind: Graveyard should be called Archive. Back in the day Graveyard was almost uninteractive, but nowadays it's a resource similar to your Library.
Evan I'm not sure if it works this way, or what, but if Another cleric of the forward order is played while one is under your control, would you not gain 8 life ?
I got relic seeker twice in a row as my promo. : ( I still went 3-1 both times with virtually identical R/W aggro decks (relic seeker even got some equipment once). Triple flare, triple javelin, triple akroan sergeant, double suppression bonds, double patron of the valiant, and like 4 topan freeblades. It was super consistent.
Sword of the Animist and Sigil of Valor definitely seem usable in at LEAST limited. It's not like it can't do anything at least in the context of bears with upsides.
New to Magic. Just curious if your judgments about many of these cards is as relevant for constructed standard play as it is for drafts (I don't know if this is the right terminology). How much could the value of these cards change depending on the format I am playing?
Paul Musso generally, limited just wants big creatures that are good value for the mana cost. in constructed, well it depends. their evaluation of cards holds pretty well between both limited and standard because the individual value of cards is the most important without all the crazy combos you can do having cards further and further back. modern has its own metagame, and so does legacy, and so does vintage, so the value entirely depends on what cards are available and what kind of deck you're trying to make, for what format. when you're going back as far as vintage though people use all kinds of nuts decks with completely broken cards so the chances that newer cards will be able to compete with the power of those older cards is slim. as an obvious example (or maybe not if you're a new player), you're never ever ever going to see another ancestral recall or time walk or black lotus, so to compare newer cards to those is absurd. to answer your question, the value of cards will change a LOT in different formats. what's a great card in standard could be an okay card in modern and a terrible card in legacy, or a card that doesnt really work with the other cards in standard could open up some crazy combo in vintage, just look at planeswalkers which are a newer card type but many of them are seeing play in vintage just because having a planeswalker is (almost) always better than not having one. it's just really situational which cards are better in what format.
The concept of gods only in being when enough people believe in them is also basically the main concept in American Gods by Neil Gaiman, which I only can recommend.
Mitch no With the way Deathmist Raptor's ability is worded, they decide whether to bring it back or not as it resolves. They flip up a creature, Deathmist Raptor's ability and the morph creature's triggered ability go on the stack (assuming the morph creature has an effect when it morphs). If you Hallowed Moonlight in response to Deathmist Raptor's ability, they can simply choose NOT to return it to the battlefield, and so it does not then get exiled by Hallowed Moonlight, instead simply staying in the graveyard.
Sentinel of the Eternal Watch was probably the best card in my entire sealed pool. maybe that says something about my pool, but that card is fantastic and I won every game it came down on.
what's the problem with altering bob's art so it says UPKEEP? it's a mandatory trigger, even if you miss it, your opponent must call a judge and you are probably getting a warning, but it's still going on the stack
That used to be the case, but it is no longer so. Currently, there are 2 classifications for triggers: detrimental, and non-detrimental. Whether the trigger is detrimental or not, it is the controller of the trigger's responsibility to keep up with it. The opponent is no longer required to remind you of them when you do miss them. (As a side note, the difference between a detrimental trigger and non- is only whether or not you will get a warning at a competitive event, or if no penalty will be issued. The process for handling the missed trigger remains the same for both types. I would suggest looking into the I.P.G. and the J.A.R. if you want to learn more about the procedure currently used for handling missed triggers for competitive and regular events respectively)
Also as an additional side note, you will not receive a penalty for missing a Bob trigger at a competitive event under the current policy, because it is not considered to be detrimental, but the philosophy behind determining if a trigger is detrimental or not is a little confusing and not quite 'set in stone', but I would definitely suggest checking it out if you want to know more :)
AlphaRatt i read the IPG, specifically section 2.1 for triggers, after a disagreement with a judge about my kataki (he reminded my opponent of the trigger and in reality he shouldn't have). As i understand it, since 2012 there's two rules regarding triggers, you no longer need to remind your opponent about their triggers and you can't forget your own triggers. So if a triggered ability says, for example, "whenever a creature enters the battlefield you may gain 1 life" and the controller of that ability continues play without gaining the life after a creatures has entered the battlefield, then it is assumed he chose to not trigger it. But bob's trigger doesn't say "you may", it's mandatory, so if you "forget" to trigger it it's considered cheating and you get a warning. There's also more categories of triggers such as if they affect gameplay in a visible way or not.
You are absolutely correct about the triggers, it is not your job to play for your opponents, and it was always such a huge feel-bad to have to remind them of the trigger that would kill you and end the game!!! You are also absolutely NOT allowed to intentionally miss triggers!!! But.... If you do legitimately forget about any trigger, it will be assessed as to whether or not too much time has passed between when the trigger should have occurred and "now" (when it is noticed). The current (loose) time allotted for a trigger is one turn cycle. If it is noticed within the 'turn cycle' then the judge will ask the opponent whether or not they want the trigger to be placed on the stack now, or not at all. If it is decided that too much time has passed the trigger will just be missed and the game will proceed (keep in mind the part about detrimental triggers to asses whether or not there will be a warning) As with all rules there are a few exceptions, Nothing is ever too simple... That would be too easy :) ... Those exceptions are when a choice had to be made that was not, or an illegal choice was made... The prime example of this is Pithing Needle. If I forget to name something when I play it, or if I name something that is not legal in the format (like say I was playing modern, and I named True Name Nemesis with Pithing Needle... That card is not legal in Modern, so I can't name it. In the case of forgetting to make a choice, you do at the time it is noticed.) Another exception is zone changing triggers, prime amongst these is Obzidat Ghost Council, and these are handled by letting the opponent decide if they want the trigger to happen now? Or at the beginning of the next phase? I believe there are one or two more exceptions, but I can't seem to remember them right now, so I will just move on, but be aware that there might be more. You do mention cheating, and it is cheating to intentionally miss your own triggers!!! Prime example is the one brought up in the video, Bob, if you are at 1 life and have remembered every Bob trigger earlier in the game, but then conveniently forget it when you are at low life, then the judge will be having a whole different conversation with you!!! Lastly, it should be noted that you are correct, there are triggers that have an immediate impact on the game state, and those that do not. The only difference in these to note is that you do not have to show awareness of trigger until they have a visible change to the game state. This subject is not a complicated one, but one that would turn this novel that I have already wrote, into a monster!!! I was certainly not trying to bash your comment in any way, just wanted to provide a corrected update to the procedure. I hope this helped without ranting or belittling your comment at all :)

Is this a real discussion if knightly valor is better than sentinel of the eternal watch? I don't remember valor being anywhere near as good as these guys are talking about.
i think kytheon became gideon is like a war name sortof like on khans because it "sparks" when kytheon attacks with 2 or more creatures sort of like going into war forged making him no longer kytheon
xcver Was just coming to post the same thing. And here is the applicable rule: 508.4. If a creature is put onto the battlefield attacking, its controller chooses which defending player or which planeswalker a defending player controls it's attacking as it enters the battlefield (unless the effect that put it onto the battlefield specifies what it's attacking). Such creatures are "attacking" but, for the purposes of trigger events and effects, they never "attacked."
Hixus, Prison Warden, Does this guy exile all creatures that did damage to you this turn or just one? It does not target just says if a creature dealt damage to you this turn, exile that creature till Hixus leaves play.

Jacob Watkins It doesn't work the same as the DFCs from Innistrad. Instead, they get exiled, then enter as their planeswalker form.

Flavor fail if you put knightly valor on the flying dead kids. Also pretty brutal if you put on murder investigation.

i think kytheon became gideon is like a war name sortof like on khans because it "sparks" when kytheon attacks with 2 or more creatures sort of like going into war forged making him no longer kytheon

508.4. If a creature is put onto the battlefield attacking, its controller chooses which defending player or which planeswalker a defending player controls it's attacking as it enters the battlefield (unless the effect that put it onto the battlefield specifies what it's attacking). Such creatures are "attacking" but, for the purposes of trigger events and effects, they never "attacked."
Wow. Suppression Bonds shuts down planeswalkers/creatures/enchantments/artifacts. Pretty nice for a common. Too bad it's not cheaper.

Hixus, Prison Warden, Does this guy exile all creatures that did damage to you this turn or just one? It does not target just says if a creature dealt damage to you this turn, exile that creature till Hixus leaves play.
