- Bandai just announced a 3-set of MS Hangars sold in The Gundam Base stores, but did you know that 15 years ago, there was already such a product made by the long-forgotten Bandai Asia?
And did you know that Bandai Asia was in charge of some very successful Mobile Suit Gundam product lines, despite being just a region office? It's likely you've bought one or two products developed by them even!
So come take a look at this largely unknown and very obscure product that represents all the best of what Bandai Asia once had to offer fans.

I love how you take a rather innocuous object like a simple hangar base that really doesn’t do anything at all, and turns it into a jumping board to tell a story about another time and eliciting fond memories of a bygone era. Please never stop making videos!
Thank you! It's fortunate too that I happen to have items like this in my collection that fits such a story. I would have never thought this little kit(?) to have been so useful one day
at 6:31 "Mantlet" actually is a word, in this context i believe its referring to a bullet resistant screen or plate that protects soldiers from enemy fire, usually on a tank or in an otherwise fortified position. i think what they were thinking was that its protecting soldiers from blast back from the suits leg thrusters.
I loved the RX78 with the full action g-armor that I got in the us. It even had fully working rubber tank threads.

When I was growing up my mom was the biggest Gundam fan in the house, having caught Gundam Wing on Toonami. She had 1/144 kits of all the main Gundams from that show, plus the Tallgeese and Epyon, and the Endless Waltz versions of the main Gundams in 1/100. She could tell I liked the Gundam aesthetic, but for a variety of reasons I couldn't watch the shows and she rightly figured that since I was like, 5 years old, I wouldn't be into model building.
Point of all this is to say that she got me an SD Sandrock action figure. I'm pretty sure the Sandrock featured at 3:27 is the same figure.
It's very rare for me to have any connection to a Gundam or model building retrospective like this, as I could only call myself a proper fan and hobbyist recently, so it was really cool to see that for once I actually can relate to the history in one of these videos.
The SD Gundam figure line really got a lot of people started in their Gundam fandom and doesn't get nearly enough recognition for it
This channel is quickly becoming one of my favorite Gunpla Review channel.
Love the tidbits about history, and the reviews on rarer and/or older stuff.
I'm real happy to have these forgotten products and history be documented and seen more on the Internet too:)

Man growing up in the late 90s early 2000s next to a comic book shop we had an endless supply of msia figures.
Mantlet is a word, it was originally used for portable barriers in warfare to shield troops from archers.

I can imagine if Bandai release this kind of quality products these days it'll be a lot expensive. Just look at that pre painted colour and working mechanism, simple and yet really appreciated.
They absolutely would see it today and know they can charge much more regardless of the cost to produce it. It gets twice as insidious when they'd surely put it on P-Bandai too
I happened to grab a MSIA Gundam Dynames a few months ago from someone who had it for so long. It feels like an honor to have it.
Its like having a piece of history within my hands.
Those later OO MSIA got the best-looking boxes of the whole line. I wonder if it can hold up the big rifle without the joint slipping
@@HobbyClubhouse Unfortunately, I had to tighten the joints on my Dynames using the super glue trick. Works like a charm though. Can also pull off the kneeling pose nicely as well.
Oh man. I still have the MSIA xamel and even the EMSIA gundam g3 and hyaku shiki. Those figures were amazing for their time and still hold up til today IMO. I actually prefer some of my MSIAs to the robot damashii's that were released. The only shame was the weird almost 1/200 scaling that don't fit in too well with the rest of my HGUC collection, but they work well enough for photos. Bandai asia really was such a gem.
The MSIA Xamel really was insane, I loved that original gimmick where the back skirt could be taken off and used as a mounted gun. And yeah, they got stuck with that odd scale which made them incompatible with everything else -- though they kinda fixed that by making everything under the sun in the line...

when searching for second hand kits you'll always see people selling their collections of old sd figurines and ms-in-action figures and it always caught my attention! thank you for covering this

One thing I noticed with people selling old MSIA collections is that the figures had so many loose accessories, they're almost guaranteed to not all be complete and get lost, which is a shame. That and they're always loose in one big cardboard box...

I still have MSiAs 2 decades later ranging from Char's Counter Attack to G Gundam. All tucked away in a drawer. My daughter saw them and wanted them, but the sentimental value is too great hahaha. So i went on eBay and found some for her. Got her gogg , gm cannon, and nobel gundam. She ignored the humanoids and loved gogg because it looked like a robot egg to her. 😁
Your daughter favoring the Gogg sounds like the cutest thing in the world (especially when the Gogg is quite underappreciated by fans for being exactly quite egg-y)

I'm old enough to see the MSiAs sold brand new in toy stores in my country (i even still have Dearka's black Zaku Phantom from GSD), and vaguely remember the SD ones, ah memories.
Back to the topic at hans, is there any 3P makers for gunpla things? I also collect Transformers, and there's a lot of third party accessories makers (guns, doodads, filler pieces), especially after 3D printing took off. I'd imagine a 3P producing catapults, hi-mega cannons, crew members compatible with HG/MG would have it's fan, doubly so since Bandai seems to focus more and more on P-Bandai / physical domestic store catalogue.
Hm, there are definitely third-party accessories. They're usually from china or Taiwan and they almost always make things in 1/100 scale. But the biggest problem is they're very mysterious and have no website or contacts so they might make one or two thing before they die off, or their products are nearly impossible to get hold of...
Same, i have a drawer full of old MSiAs some 20 years old some older . I have both japanese and american versions. Some stores sold both.
Hi Mr@@HobbyClubhouse , on a whim i searched 'MS Hanger' on one of my local e-store, and amidst a sea of actual hangers, sonebody sold one of his old collection, on a battered box. He's asking for ~150 HKD, do you think that's an ok price?
Too bad about the 3rd party, i think something like Daban / DM felt it's easier to sell KOs rather than veering into that market.
(Also i don't know anyone named hans but i'm keeping that typo lol)
$150 sounds like an acceptable price for something obscure like this. There's a bit of cost added to it but it feels fair to me

Dang I wish they would make a model kit version of this as it's simple and looks fairly cheap to produce. Didn't even know Bandai Asia existed because I only ever knew Bandai was the Kamen Rider and Gundam toy maker when I was young never batting an eye on the readables on boxes.
As for the figures, when I was pretty young I saw a lot of the Mobile Suit in Action figures but I was more fixated in Ben 10 toys at the time so I never got the chance to pick up at least one figure. Which kinda sucks since when one my local malls was changing ownership they sold most of the toys with ridiculously cheap prices before they renovated the place. I saw a post from one of my local Gunpla Facebook groups they got a PG kit for around $40 US and an EZ 8 MS in Action for like less than $10 from that mall before it closed. By the time that mall was closing the school I was at was a bit too far for me to just walk and browse toys like I used to so I wasn't able to get any toys for cheap.
I just realized Bandai also made those Ben 10 toys I bought when I was younger but looking into it a bit it was Bandai America that was handling it.
Man, I didn't know Ben10 was handled by Bandai too, so basically in your childhood they had your favorite IPs cornered
But you not noticing isn't that strange, Bandai seems to downplay its brand quite a bit in the US and put the IP first. Japanese brands seem to do that, like Takara Tony, though I'm not sure why.
And yeah, towards the end, there was a long period when MSIA figures were being cleared out and they were so crazy cheap, I still remember the Ground Type Gundam I picked up on a trip to America for like $4

Going on the Bandai Asia website archives makes me so upset. Looking at the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong and Taiwan parts? Gundam, Sentai, Masked Rider, Bleach, Crush Gear, Ultraman, the frickin' _Wonderswan._ The Australia section? The same shitty Power Rangers and Digimon figures, and nothing else. Even back in the 2000s, Australia kept getting shafted with this stuff.

I have the Dengeki (I think) release and it's less robust, that's for sure! It only reclines like 40 degrees, though you can take the pistons apart or pull it off the base entirely if you want it to lie flat. It's good enough, especially for a pack-in bonus, but Bandai-Asia's version puts it to shame.

@@HobbyClubhouse Actually, at 8:29 you can see how far back it reclines. That's the max amount. It does nothing else. In fact, the Dengeki box at 0:25 shows the entire variation it can do. Hopefully it pops back up on Mandarake sometime soon (I got mine there in July 2019)! Looking at the current OOS listing, the box says September 2010, even!

Yeah, the EG RX-78 does fit, though his feet are ironically a little small and the platforms are a bit hard to move. So now you also know why the demo was done with the Guncannon:)

That really is quite true. They probably made the folks back in Japan look a bit bad by actually giving fans everything they wanted
