The shift handles are different. I have seen other shift handles for automatic e30s for sale. There might be a video out there for that and I'm sure it's easy.
hey man, do you know if all roadster M series do? I just picked up a 99 and the shift nob was broken, watched your video this morning and ordered a new one. I was just out side playing around with the boot and noticed that the old wiring wasn't plugged in and I cant find the other side of the plug. Any suggestions? It was one of the earlier 99 models
I'm not sure. My guess is that the knob will work with an e46. The 98-2002 M Roadsters were wired to support the illuminated shift knob. To get the shift knob to illuminate on other cars you might have to run wiring. It's gonna take some research.
The top of the shift boot should fit tight around the top of the stick. My guess is that the top of your shift boot is stretched or torn. You may be able to repair the boot or you may need a new one. Here is a link to an article specific to replacing the boot - note how small the hole at the top of the boot is in the picture. blog.bavauto.com/8075/bmw-shifter-boot-removal-and-replacement/
If the knob will fit the next trick will be to get it wired. My car came from the factory wired for the illuminated knob - plug and play. It is possible to wire up your own
I have exact same BMW M roadster.Same outside and inside color .It's true the '97 models are without lights in the knob.I replaced mine by a Haman knob .and also the brake level..Mine is also tuned up to 340 hp by mounting a cold air intake from K&N,replaced the exhaust by a performance one a some modification in the computer.Cool cars to drive but tricky in wet weather and for sure on snow.
+sharkytwo 1998 is the first year for the M Roadsteren.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_M_RoadsterYou got to 340 hp from the original 240 hp with cold air intake, exhaust, and chipping? That is impressive. They are tricky to drive in wet weather and snow. I've driven mine to work every day in Missouri for almost three years - just have to be careful.
I have an e36 M3, I bought a gear knob without the 2 wires attached to it. Are the 2 wires just for illuminating? Can i just cut them off? Thanks in advance!
I would not cut them off. It won't hurt to tuck them into the foam rubber sound dampener and leave them. Some day you, or the next owner may want to use those wires.
+Fixing Things Thanks for the video. I'm replacing the knob on my M car with a non-illuminated one soon - is it okay to wrap the connector with tape before tucking it into the foam as an added precaution?
The truth is that I don't know for sure. According to a forum post all the 98 to 2002 M Roadsters had them. forum.roadfly.com/threads/12897465-Shift-Knob-Removal It seems strange that your M has a shift knob with wiring but nothing to plug into. If I remember right the wires run toward the front of the car, either it's buried in there somewhere or someone cut them out. Hope this helps.
I got my shift knob off without a hitch but, while replacing, I cant get that darn shift boot to stay on the knob. It just falls down showing the shift lever. Anyone have any advise? If it helps Im replacing the knob shown in this video with a ZHP knob.

They cost $75 more than a stock one
