  • We all love hearing amazing travel stories and about beautiful places around the world but what happens when something goes wrong? We might be the most prepared travelers, it doesn’t mean we won’t find ourselves in certain situations because we’re human, we’re not perfect. So what do we do to get out of these situations? How do we overcome them? That’s what I’ll be talking about in this video.

    One thing I have started to do is have a separate bank account to travel with (I use Starling app at the moment because they don't charge to withdraw money abroad) and transfer funds into there. If it gets stolen, lost or fraud, it is just the money in that account and has no connection to my wages or general transactions :) I take my normal cards as well as back up but they don't always go out and about with me.
    When you talked about being drugged, I wondered if that was what happened to me (you talking about it has only just made me think about). It was in Phenom Phen and I got back at night, and everything just felt weird, I was really hot and thirsty and I swear I could see rice falling from the ceiling. I don't drink, so this was really odd for me, I wrote it off as dehydration; but I am just wondering now. (this is Helen from Patreon btw :) )

    • @WheresPoppy
      @WheresPoppy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Helen! Thanks for telling me, it's hard to know who is who with different usernames haha. That's an awesome idea of having different bank accounts. I looked into this actually but for some reason never decided to do it. I mean, it's quite possible something was slipped in your drink. But either way, you made it out okay and were safe and that's what matters!

    I do exactly the things you mentioned. I keep an emergency 2x $100 bills with a passport card and atm card in a Starbucks breath mint tin. The tin is exactly the same size as a credit card. Now the atm cards work on your phone. Great other safety tip is a no one ever store a Starbucks coffee cup. Get one, put a couple napkins in it and then jewelry, cash or even small phone. I also use metal tie wraps on every zipper to slow down thieves. Get a pacsafe bag. The shoulder strap is a security strap and will attach to a chair etc and can’t be cut. The entire bag has a chicken wire mesh and can’t be slashed. Those are my tips. Starbucks mint tin, coffee cup safe, pacsafe bags

    • @WheresPoppy
      @WheresPoppy  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a genius idea to store your extra card and money in a mint can. I've never thought about that, although I would be slightly scared I'd accidentally throw it away haha...This is kind of gross but I've heard of people storing their keys and wallet in a "poopy diaper" and leaving it on the beach while they go swimming. In reality, it's just chocolate smeared over a clean diaper but this way nobody will go near it and their stuff is "safe" in theory haha.

    • @DavidDiaz-so5kj
      @DavidDiaz-so5kj 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Where's Poppy I have two mints and have never thrown them out. Been doing it for about 12 years. Hard for me to carry a diaper around, people might talk... or think I’m lazy

    Great topic Poppy,can't wait for part two.I think a key point you made is we are all reliant on the goodwill of others.This is true regardless of if your travelling or going about your normal business in your own hometown and community.All people need to be aware of others they encounter who are behaving oddly or with criminal intent.People with bad intentions are going to be constantly scoping for targets of there activities and a lack of situation awareness could put you in the crosshairs.I'm sure the ATM scams are quite a good earner for them for example and quite hard for the cops to catch.

    • @WheresPoppy
      @WheresPoppy  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Eric! Yep agreed, bad guys are everywhere and we should be constantly on the look out no matter where we are. At the same time, we do need to enjoy life and have faith in people. It's all about finding that good balance.

    Initially, I did cover myself with a travel health insurance policy. But later I learned to bring some medications, (never consumed anyway) like .....
    1 Fever tablets for sudden change in weather conditions, and

    Happy holidays.

    Hi, Poppy. Hope you are doing well. I find when traveling that things go wrong when you try to compress too many activities or ideas into
    One trip. Good traveling should be enjoyable and not stressful and disappointing. Traveling at a slower pace, never assuming others are
    Going to respect your property, taking precautions and regular inventory of your things/passport/cash as you travel can help, though no single
    Plan is going to be foolproof. Using cash vs debit card or credit card is sometimes more secure, even though plastic is more convenient. In any transaction, look at your surroundings and ask yourself if scammers could steal personal information/card numbers. Simple cash and discreet
    Use of the internet/smart phone also means less chance of getting scammed. Travel Health Insurance, as you say, is a good idea. I was promised care by my travel agent when I went to China, and when I got there, and came down w a throat infection, the tour company did not come though with any care. Have a backup plan or pick up Imodium/meds before you depart. But still love your video and think it is a good idea
    To help others prepare for their trip. Stay safe and lovely.

    Some embassies have a way to register that you are travelling, saves time in situations gone wrong. The US one is called STEP. We keep all items in a safe or on us. We also keep separate cards and only take money out of ATMs and use cash as little as possible. Water proof bags for water activities. Being seen with the cash is often what gets you followed. Even better at a large hotel which the watches the ATM more closely. All great tips, they can install a reader on the ATM, I even check my local ATM here in HK. Probiotic tablets are a great idea and something to deal with if that doesn't work. Most places sell imodium or similar. Do not feel bad, drugging is a common thing in the Philippines. Also cases of them getting your email (you share with a new friend) and they hack your email and notify your contacts that you are stuck in Philippines to send money to a Western Union...where they collect your money. I would never get in the vehicle and I've lived outside my home country 20 years, have local residency, would not do it. Hope all is going well with your student loans.....great life plan.

They just got into a fight and i happened to be tbeir get away driver on accident. They were whispering on taking me somewhere and robbing me. I just remained calm like nothing happened no worries. Staying calm helped me to manipulate my situation for me own benefit. They tipped me and payed me out of fear. They went to jail the next day. Due to the fight prior. Back on your boat Poppy. Sorry I ever doubted u. This seems pretty specific to women though. Men can fall into a lot of other traps so you should do some interviews with a man about all this stuff as well. Honestly, men do make up most travelers without those support groups though.

      Maybe you'll enjoy part II better than, I don't think any of them are specific to men

    I pray before travel & I purchase good travel insurance and pray while on the trips of course no matter how much you prep before trips things can still go wrong , so I watch crap aka dice games from time to time because when you travel it's a sort of crap/dice game . I let my bank know before I travel , The State Dept Pass Port has a card pass port size like a driver license for 55.00 so you can leave your book pass port in your hotel safe while in the country you are in . Despite all of this things can go wrong so get travel medical insurance , veterans should take their FMP Documents Foreign Medical Program . I travel to dangerous countries on line on you tube and cry at the sad tragic stories and it's great to watch these shows and know u can ask why would the victim travel there in the first place .
