I'm shocked how amazingly good this album is. Whole Aura, Rumours, Concept of entire thing.... its just beyond my imagination! My fav track is We'll be back. Megadeth rules

I've heard the full album twice, so far, and am listening to it for the third time throughout my work commute today. As of right now, "Dogs of Chernobyl" is my favorite, and "Night Stalkers" is a close second. Honestly, I prefer their last one, as that is still my fourth favorite after Rust, Peace Sells, and Countdown. Nonetheless, definitely among my top ten of the year so far!
Damn good album and I'm 15 listens in - 9/10.. contender for album of the year.
Love this album. Great natural sounding production. You are right, this is the perfect mix of thrash Megadeth and melodic Megadeth.
Again, I love that you don't get out with a review the day the album comes out of a day after. You take the time to listen properly.

I like your reviews because you don't come in with preconceived notions and biases, you just describe the album in a fair way! Most album review channels should be called "let me try and ruin this album for you" so I barely listen to those meatheads, thanks for your honesty and integrity! To me, its right up there with their best! Dave is planning more albums soon so they'll be back!✌️
My CD copy is signed by Dave Mustaine. Pretty solid album. Life In Hell is probably my favorite on the album.
Megadeth has been putting out great albums in recent years. This new Megadeth album SKULLS!!! The band is so tight throughout these songs. Mustaine still sounds great. Definitely a highlight of the year for me so far. I give this album a 10/10!
Production is outstanding, sounds great in the car played very loud. This is a great release
Production is terrible. Distortion is weak. Drums have no punch. Seems to be common in todays metal.

I was very very surprised by how much I liked this. Dystopia was decent despite it being extremely top heavy, but I still haven't been wowed by a Megadeth album since Endgame. In fact tbh I'd been largely turned off by their output in the early 2010s as I thought a lot of it was a little subpar. This has really reignited my love for Megadeth, and is easily their best album since Endgame. Love pretty much everything about it, production's phenomenal, the riffs are excellent, and I love the thrashy energy that I feel has been missing a bit in recent years.
Allowing Kiko and Dirk into the songwriting process a bit more, I think, was the best decision Dave could've possibly made, as what they've brought to the table has brought a real freshness to the band. It's on my year end list for sure, and probably will be pretty high on it 🤘🤘
My two favorites on the album are the title track and Dogs of Chernobyl. This album is in my Top 2, might be my favorite by them!!!
This album was a pleasant surprise! Dave kicked cancers ass and now he's pissed off about it! Seriously great stuff here, Pete!

I've been listening to it all week and really digging it. I just love the arrangements and production. Also, the covers, "Police Truck" (Dead Kennedys), and "This Planets on Fire" (Sammy Hagar), are stellar too.
This is a killer lineup of the band! Digging the album a lot, it has some cheese as all their albums do, but also has loads of killer riffage as all their albums do! Kiko is a badass...this album jams!
The best since Endgame, 100%, and possibly since Countdown. The undeserved hate this album is getting is completely nuts.

I think Dystopia was a better record but I’m very happy as a lifelong Megadeth fan that Dave is just making good, heavy songs still!
It's a little try hard cheesy mainstream at points I think that's why it's getting the hate it's getting but overall it's a decent album.
The System has Failed, UA and Dystopia are clear above in my opinion. TShF gotta be the most underrated Megadeth album.

Sidebar: The only thing I do not get is everyone saying they’re “not much of a rap fan” in regards to Ice-T‘s cameo. It’s no different than the little bit of dialogue in “Captive Honor” on Countdown to Extinction. Pete you actually said it yourself, it’s spoken word. It seems more like it’s the idea of Ice-T being involved at all is what people won’t accept. If that part was left uncredited I feel like no one would’ve said anything.

Great review Pete. I've seen Megadeth 2 years in a row and they sound great live too.
I have seen them also on the last couple tours. Headlining last year with the Ryche and Trivium opening was better overall than opening for 5FDP, but 'Deth was outstanding both times.

totally disagree with saying ice-t not fitting in on the song, and I think it's so cool to bring a song down and let it take a breath.

I've been waiting to find out out what your thoughts were on this album. I bought it, the day it came out and have been listening to it ever since. Great album - for me. ranks high in their catalog.
I really enjoyed this album. This and Dystopia have been their best albums since the 2000’s. Kiko is such a great addition to the band 🔥 Also, there’s two extra songs after “We’ll Be Back”, “Police Truck” and “This Planet’s On Fire (Burn In Hell) ft. Sammy Hagar. Worth checking out
The extra songs are only on the digital release. Physical doesn't have those.
I’ve listened to it twice. My first listen was on streaming and I gave it a 3.5/5. I listened to it yesterday after I got the vinyl copy. I think I am at 4/5 now. The production is excellent, I just think there are one or two songs they could drop easily and it would make it a better album. But this may be a grower like Dystopia was. I also agree on the consistency of Megadeth. Other than Risk or Supercollider I can listen to every album and enjoy them.
That's exactly why you can't rate a Megadeth record too fast.

It’s a great and solid album! I really dig the title track. Great solos by Kiko. I would say 4/5 too.

Great album. I've been a huge fan of the band ever since Peace Sells & have enjoyed every album (even Risk).
This might just be the honeymoon period, but I feel like this is the best Megadeth album since the 90s.
Damn good album. Great production, and the individual performances are incredible (naturally). After just a few listens so far, I still feel like I prefer “Dystopia” more overall, but the bottom line is it’s another winning late career release from Dave and company.

I think they have had two late-era returns to form. The system has failed through to end game. Then the wheels fell off a bit on 13 and then they totally crashed into a ball of flames with super collider. Second return to form is dystopia through to the sick the dying ...and the dead. So probably got at least one more good album left in the tank.
I don't understand the hate for 13, it's a record full of great songs from diferent eras of Megadeth.
@@stephanea5364 It's just a bit of a letdown after end game - I have a soft spot for a few songs though like black swan and wrecker! I have a theory it was cobbled together using old songs just to complete their final record obligation with Roadrunner.
@@ronanfreeburn1388 Yeah it was cobbled together with some older songs but it's very good songs anyway. People judge the idea that made Dave trying to have 13 songs, they don't judge the record by itself.

Daves voice sounded pretty thin and tired imo on this album .

I thoroughly enjoyed this new studio album! Megadeth still has it after all these years! My favorite songs on the album are Celebutante, Soldier On! and Mission To Mars! I’d love to see them live!
What a return to form after 6 long years !!! Mustaine is surely BACK ! This is just one of their best records and easily the best after Countdown ERA !!! KIKO is just amazing ! \M/

I listened to it and then discussed it with my friend, as usual with me I listen to a new album once, then record it in a spread sheet and move on to a new album. I ave heard about as many albums as Pete has CD's behind him.
The main riff on "Soldier On" is similar to Budgie's "In for the kill".
Album is 9/10 true banger with killer riffs made by thrash metal legend. Dystopia was great but this one for me goes 1 point up. That riffing in second part Mission to Mars is pure 80s megadeth at best.

You hit it!! You're the first person that I have heard say it. I'm a Megadeth fan from way back We'll be Back - DEFINITELY has elements of Black Friday. I caught it the first time I listened to it, LOVE it.
I was an extreme thrash and speed metal fan for a long time but just not my thing much anymore but this album is fairly strong.

I really wanted to ignore this album (and Megadeth) after Ellefson got fucked over (like you didn't do worse shit in the 90's Mustaine) but it sounds like this might somehow be better than Dystopia.

Wasn't We'll Be Back actually the first single ? Anyway, solid album. The only song I found kind of cringe was Mission To Mars, at least the first half. But aside from that, it's a guitar and drums filled album. Kiko and Dirk even co wrote some of the songs with Dave, and it's a refreshing top notch sound.
Mission to Mars is super catchy but yeah, at least the first half lyrically and musically is very un-Megadeth. Still, a fun hard rock tune, just out of place. That and the Sammy Hagar cover makes me think Dave should make a rock/hard rock solo record.
Straight to number 3 on the mainstream UK album chart. Thumbs up!
Another really entertaining 'modern' Megadeth album. It took a while but since Dystopia i find much to like in their post 2000 albums.
Like Iron Maiden they can never top their first run of albums but since 2015/2016 i've been listening more to their later stuff.
I didn't notice the Black Friday similarity at first but a few days ago i heard it and now cannot unhear it. Still a fun song.

I have to agree, I feel this album pleases fans from every era of Megadeth. I really hope Dave can keep this lineup together for a few more albums, really want to see where they can go as a group. 8.5/10

Dave and Megadeth has busted is balls for 20 years making great relentless metal, while Metallica has COASTED for years with mostly mediocre Albums. LONG LIVE MEGADETH!
I'll give Metallica props- the last record was quite good, MUCH better than Death Magnetic. Not a fan of most of the last 25 years either though.
@@whatwouldhousedo5136 Death Magnetic is way better. At least it’s thrashy all the way through. 3/4 of Hardwired just sounds like tired retreads from the Load era. The only thing that’s better about Hardwired is the production, each to their own though
Drinking game for every time someone has to bring up the OTHER band every time Dave does something . It’s been like 40 years. He’s also released his fair share of dodgy material

@@whatwouldhousedo5136 Death Magnetic was Metallica's return to form and way thrashier than hardwired but I like them both.
I seen Megadeth back in the late 80s. Had the first two albums. They were okay, but I never got used to Dave Mustaine's vocals. Love his guitar playing, but his vocals are like nails on a chalkboard. I never got into the later stuff. I haven't listened to Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax in ages. I seen them all in concert in my 20s. They were great shows. I'm more of a Prog, Fusion guy anyway so I guess my tastes have changed.

Ive always been a huge fan of this band, it is surely on my top 3 bands ever and I also love Kiko Loureiro and his former band Angra. After pointing that, I think the musicians are great in this track, the mix is awesome, but I feel something is missing here to make it a great album. For example Night Stalkers could be much better without the middle to end part and Mission to Mars has a boring astronaut or whatever voice right on the best part of the song that ruins it for me. Still a solid album, but not even close to Megadeth's greatests.

I disagree regarding the Ice-T inclusion. I dig it; gives the tune a copy killer edge that I welcomed.
If you gone to target you would have got two bonus songs. one that is with sammy hagar this planet is on fire (burn in hell (sammy hagar cover)and the conjure live. My favorite actually the bonus track this planet is on fire just old school thrash and great licks. My second favorite is night stalkers and then third is we'll be back.
Also "the conjuring" live track included as a Target bonus track

There is a mistake on targets part. It even describes it on Discogs website at the bottom, detailing that Target limited edition cd. That live version of Conjuring sounds awesome.

Solid album from them. I feel it is more “in your face” than Dystopia (which I also really dig). Completely awesome
Great album. You need a mix of tempos, which it has, to keep everything from sounding the same with zero dynamics. For me it would have been a 9 out of 10 if they left out the two covers which don’t fit at all. It could have ended on a high note with We’ll Be Back.

Think this is the best since The System has Failed or even since Cryptic Writings. Solos are crazy, Dave's voice is getting better and the production is way better than Dystopia.
Dirk's drumming is similar to Gar Samuelson and adds a LOT to the songs.
The only song I didn't like is Sacrifice. Don't know but it won't connect with me at all.

Great review Pete! I’m still 50/50 with the album on my end. I like it of course, just need it to grow on me a tad more. I think Nightstalkers is good just didn’t need Ice T in it.
