Former student police officer whistleblower here - students were being educated better since than in Ben's day. There's lots to be said for hands on experience. But getting a degree is helpful too. We learned how to assess threat, risk and harm. It's great to identify a criminal on the street but its 100% true lots of criminals wear suits. We learned not only to identify criminals but also how to understand vulnerability. Criminals can be vulnerable and vulnerable people can be criminals.
I know it was meant to be a funny video but remember a lot of the real criminals wear suits.

@@cz9850 very true, it doesn’t make people criminals, but in my experience these wonderful creatures who do commit multiple crimes do have a propensity for not being able to string together a sentence unless it is constructed almost entirely with chavish gangster slang, punctuated with expletives and aggressive gesturing.

This was brilliant. My mate is a police officer in a not very nice part of nth London and he told me when he's on patrol what cars he looks out for and top of his list is grubby black 10 year old BMW 1 series, particularly with tinted windows. And then any 'old' black german car with tinted windows. Finds a reason to stop them and 9 times out of 10 comes up trumps. Criminals, little tip, get a Toyota.
1 series is for some 22 year old selling draws 😭

Ain't this the truth. Every scumbag I know either has a 10-20 year old rough as a sailors legover black or grey German motor with tinted windows or a nearly new Range Rover/BMW 3 Series with a shit incorrectly spaced 4D number plate. My best mate (who's ex plod) calls them "Section 1" cars 😂

I walked past a couple of police officers searching someone in the high street, and the guy said ' why you searching me i have done nothing wrong '. The policeman said ' The way you are dressed you might aswell have criminal tattooed on your forehead '. Came out of the shop 5 mins later and they were arresting him so they must have found something.
As someone who works retail the amount of shoplifter I've seen getting caught wearing exactly what you described is high (as are they, lol)
I worked in Co op for a year and shoplifters were fairly easy to spot

When I was a london street trader in the early 90's we used to watch out for plainers/crime squad. They used to wear trainers, jeans, warrant card a little bigger and thicker than a credit card wallet in their back pocket, dark anorak or sports jacket, rucksack over1 shoulder contains their radio and evidence book. They always looked like they they were trying to blend in and observe discreetly

I got set up for attempted burglary when I was 18 , they said I would get 3 years if I went not guilty, I got remanded for nothing, there’s plenty of bent cops, I got 12 months, burglars used to wear Reebok classics in jail fact in early 2000s
30+ years in retail. This is totally accurate. Shop lifters are also easy to spot.
Nowadays it's all designer. There was a designer faze with Burberry back in the day, then that fizzled out into cheaper sportswear like Nike. Then Nike got expensive and now they all wear LV man bags and Moncler coats. Your average drug dealer wears a £4k outfit

Yep. I was burgled by four little shit bags a few years ago. The rozzers rolled them all up and I got all my possessions back. Three of them engaged with restorative justice and so I met them, one in prison. They were all wearing "the uniform", as the social worker called it.

Totally nailed it. I had a good laugh the other day when i saw a pair of 'little darlings' dressed exactly like that, sat on a patch of grass in handcuffs while the police helicopter was above presumably looking for their mates 😂

Hi Ben, I have just had an offer for my local police force after a really long process. I am currently an electrician so taking a significant paycut to begin with but the police is something ove always wanted to do, Would you reccomend it or am i better staying as an electrician its such a hard decision with a young family. I deal with shoplifters all day long and I'm telling you all now.......I CAN SPOT YOU BEFORE YOU ENTER MY STORE. Seriously just get a neon sign that says 'totally not a criminal' and it would be less obvious.
@@GodDamnItCarl Nah trust me, if you're dodgy we know it. Walking out without buying anything doesnt make us suspicious. Walking in areas of the store that seen out of place, taking unpopular aisles, posture, behaviour etc all make us watch you more. I can also tell instantly when a customer is just a customer so youre good dude.
So you can spot a thief just by the way they look? What a load of BOLLOCKS haha! You cant be a good security (or whatever you are?) guard then. Theres plenty of criminals that by looks alone would be the very LAST people youd expect. Thats what makes them super effective as people like you only go for the stereotypes.

Here's the thing, if it's my store you come in and we know youre a prolific shoplifter (lean in this is a good one I promise) sometimes we let you. Thats because we have cameras and your face on record which is great with our new system that actually has facial recognition and sets off a warning when you come in. We record you through our whole store, the shopping centre, car park and all until youre off our property. Then when you come next time (usually after we have a nice little file) we call the cops and let them handle it. Then youre not just looking at one offence of shoplifting that gets you a slap on the wrist, youre looking at multiple and a sentence. Trust me no criminal is even remotely as clever as they think they are 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Just a question for anyone who may know: why do some officers wear high vis vests and some wear black vests? Are they assigned to each officer or are they just chosen? I’ve always wondered if there is a reason for each colour.
High viz is usually mandatory if you're doing any form of roads policing, or out of vehicle policing on the roads. Standard response and ARV will wear black unless dealing with a traffic job.

the person stealing to feed there kids still knows its wrong but sees no other way and if given a choice would have chosen not to be in the situation she or he is in at this time

Ey up, Ben. So I have a funny anecdote for you. I'm fairly sure you arrested me and a few of my family and friends back in the day (West Yorkshire) and we all had BMF wallets. They were custom made. I can't think of anyone else I know/knew with those wallets so I am wondering if it may have been me and mine you're on about. Was it a trend for others aswell or was it a specific group you had in mind?
Either way, I can promise it wasn't from Auntie Maureen and it didn't have JD sports vouchers in it. Also never shoplifted.
