Jon Lord is my all time favourite player. But no-one should underestimate Don Airey, the guy is truly great. In my opinion, the only one who could replace the Lord.

It is down to nuances and style. Both are incredible players and can make a Hammond sing, growl, rock and appeal to all types of ear.. enjoy both and rejoice in the fact we have videos of Jon to still see his performances.

@TMUSICIAN - Jon Lord personally approved of Don Airey as the next man in Deep Purple and since he played with Rainbow and Whitesnake which has quite much to do with Deep Purple I feel it was a natural choice. The word "technique" is overused on the internet. I actually seen a documentary where one person says Ritchie Blackmore had superier technique and in the next minute another says he had average technique. I can't who has better, Lord or Airey, but that don't matter to me. Both are great!
So I have to add one more to my list of Keyboard greats. Don Airy of Collasium. Little known to me until he replaced Jon. The others well Rick and Keith of course.

Cut Runs Deep for Airey and Highway Star (made in Japan version) for Lord.... I just love Lord.... My techniques of playing the keyboard are based on his playstyle, on my profile u can find myspace address where i've put my prog/rock songs with Organ, and you can say if I'm Airey or Lord peon... Long live to both, but Jon Lord is the best organ in rock player
Airey is technically better than Lord, but music isn't only technique. Lord is a pioneer of the rock keyboards, he can be compared only with Rick Wakeman, or Keith Emerson, or Tony Banks, musicians of his generation. Airey is a musician of the next generation. Without Lord and his works of pioneering, the style of Airey never can be developed. Anyway, Lord is a classical and rock composer, not Airey.
Only die hard fans and non musicians like you can´t see that JL did not develop since the early 70s - for whatever reason. And JL = No.1? ...best joke on youtube .... Here you can hear that Airey is far ahead - as is Emerson, Argent, Wakeman, Rudess and many others.
