In my mind, I think the ending was perfect. Yes, it does leave you wondering about "will they or won't they" but the scene does a perfect job in showing that it doesn't matter. They'll be fine whether or not they end up together because they've helped each other grow and mature in multiple ways. One person can think "Oh well Connell moves to New York, falls in love with it and someone else and moves on even with that piece of Marianne with him" and another can think "Connell goes to New York and grows as an individual, not relying on Marianne's support. Then moves back and their love is stronger and healthier." Either way it works out perfectly.

I agree with this, too...my takeaway is that they have learned from all their struggles both individually and as a couple - learned it is safe to express themselves fully, lessened their concern what others think, to actively accommodate each other, to listen deeply, etc. They have experienced a loving and supportive relationship and increased their intimacy. At this point, Connell states he is aware that Marianne is very unique and special. They have many months until he leaves. I was not under the impression they were saying goodbye right then. I see them taking their skills and insights to continue to grow closer as a couple.

It ended just like the book. The whole series was just like the book. I liked it bc in my mind these two could never stay apart and for that reason they won’t be apart for long.

same I know sometime in the future their paths will cross but what made me sad in the book is when Marianne said that maybe in the future, if they meet again Connell will be different from how he was in the present, that once he leaves he'll also change.

I keep "stumbling" into these reviews despite scanning YT incessantly since the tv series first aired. I enjoyed this one just as much as the others!
I agree with you regarding Paul Mescals scene with the counsellor. He really lives it and the way he moves between overwhelming emotion and attempts to gather himself is truly great acting. Daisys' portrayal of Marianne was equally mesmerising. The only possible "criticism" is that she is very beautiful unlike the Marianne of the book who is described in certain sections as "ugly". No "normal" guy would treat the Marianne of the film in the way Connell does. Eric, Jamie and Alan (her brother) would have been served up with some very full and frank discussions if I were Connell.
The sex scenes between C&M were not gratuitous imho and actually quite beautiful esp in the first scene where Connell shows such care for Marianne (if only he'd behaved like that all the time!).
One of the best shows I've ever seen in all honesty and while the ending left me very disappointed on first viewing I've come to see it as a very clever device even if I do oscillate between how it all ends up. The nearest I've seen to it is John Fowles providing two ending scenarios in The French Lieutenants Woman very cleverly executed in the film (Harold Pinter idea I believe).

I've heard of Intimacy Coordinators and the like recently, seems to be a bit of a shift (especially in the past half decade or so) where film and TV are really putting in the effort to make sure that explicit scenes get treated with the care they need to make sure everything stays above board and nobody has to feel uncomfortable.

Yeh and I think that is wonderful! Because it is an area where many people can be very easily exploited and so I think it is a wonderful development. From the sounds of it, the coordinators is on the side of the performer and his priority are the actors :)

@NateGate They serve as advocates. Ida choreographed the scenes with the Director. This frees the actors up to emote and express the emotional material and the sexuality and expression is realistic and to move the story along.

I mean I think the ending was very true to the story and characters because it almost wouldn’t make sense for them to have a clean cut ending given their circumstances.

Nice video essay. Would've expected this level to have hundreds of thousands of views. Lucky, i somehow stumbled on it. :)
And there were just the right amount of sex scenes.
Exeptoinal relationships can happen to bormal people. Thats one of the points.
Well the ending, yeah, had to rely on booknerds telling they break up. And it's silly. "Story kf self growth" - do me a favor. But whatever. I want them together and no new seasons for that reason.
