Stop at the overlook at the lake for an epic pic. This road is the otherside of the MDHW where people come over the dirt passes but this is all paved. At the lake is where a lot of folks come out of the mountain passes. You can get to the mtn passes here to Siverton/Ouray as well I think. Those are not to be taken lightly.
I was there June 2024, and you are right. It was made for motorcycles. At the top of the pass, there is an abandoned campground and behind that is a Really nice dirt road along side a stream. (It loops around.) Your bike would be perfect for it. I did it on a triumph scrambler 900.
The dead trees aren’t caused by burns, they are the result of drought stressing them and making them susceptible to the bark beetle. If you ride to the Rio Grand Reservoir on the dirt road you will see thousands more acres of them.

Dirt roads are accessible to Animas Forks from Lake City and go over to Ouray and Silverton .
Lake City and Creede are the coolest little old mining towns along this route.Great mining museum in Creede.Great area to camp or get a cabin.
