  • Where the rubber meets the road! There are a number of different compounds used for the tires we race in our slot car club, the Arizona Garage Racers. The material used makes a huge difference in a slot car's performance. Let's get into it!

Back in the early 60s I would use the harder rubber tires for the road tracks and the softer foam tires on my dragsters. One really popular tire back the were the Cox tires. I had 2 Cox cars and everyone wanted to buy those tires. Looking forward to the next episode. Tires were always one of those mystery areas for me.

The strangest tires I've seen were in a class we ran years ago (I think they were NSR?) where we put the soft rubber tires on the wheels, and then with a small syringe pumped a bit of air pressure in to plump up the tire. Had to always explain to my wife the presence of those needles in my car box. 🤣

I personally think tires are BS and a waste of money. I hope the people that are using these tires understand what the purpose of a slick is for, but I really don't think they do. So real slicks are for creating adhesion but how do you create adhesion on a piece of plastic or wood when there is no heat created between the tire and the track. Back in the 60s the cars came with treaded tires with no magnets in the car and you enjoyed the cars. I got back into this to have fun but I can't see myself spending $100 for a car and then spending another whatever amount it takes to create a faster car, that's not fun and the enjoyment is gone. All I can say is best of luck to those who want to spend that kind of money and time to get what are you going to win thousands of dollars doing this, I bet not but as they say each to his own. I just wish somebody would make tires with treads you would find it would it would run better on the track.

I agree that most importantly you should be having fun-- whatever tires you prefer!
