Thank you for this session. That was truly the best tutorial on the subject I've ever seen and heard. Great job. It's going to change my guitar playing from now on, just as you intended...

This song (and the picking style) pre-dates Merle Travis by a number of years so it's not "Travis-picking". There were many folk/blues players playing that style long before anyone had heard of him, but the term "Travis-picking" has somehow gained traction here on TH-cam. It was even called "Cotten-Picking" all those years ago too!
*contorts all 5 digits to do an F chord, including unnaturally fretting with his thumb* "There very simple!" You and I have very different definitions of the word "simple".
@@JoeMurphysGuitarlessonsThat's true. But presenting an advanced piece with unconventional chord fingering as though it's "easy" is only setting up people for disappointment. Fretting with the thumb is only physically possible if you have especially large hands and a fairly narrow guitar neck. No amount of practice will change that, but it will frustrate young students and make them hate guitar.
@mikeroch200 well I disagree. You can play the chord however you like. Barre chord if you prefer neither is easy, but they have to be tackled if we are ever going to achieve anything. With the right attitude we can achieve anything, with negative thinking we go nowhere.
I have fairly small hands and have a tough time fretting an F this way, but it isn't physically impossible. It takes practice, a.k.a. WORK. There are a great many songs that you simply won't be able to play unless you can learn how to do this. It is worth the effort.
@@gregpiper8416Oh, I'm sure it's technically possible. That's not the point. Playing guitar should be fun. Physically injuring your fingers, just to play "Freight Train" is not fun. There are far more great songs out there that don't require such ridiculous fingering. Never think you need to subject yourself to such torment just to play a tune. Life's too short. It's not worth it. Every second you waste on a terrible song like Freight Train is time you could be learning a song that's both fun to listen to AND play.
Excellent lesson, thanks for this breakdown & clarity
Took me months to play streets of London Travis style. Thanks again joe
What a wonderful challenge!...Thanks Joe
I like this lesson on this song. Easy to grasp.

Do I need to be a Patrion member to get the tabs for this song?
Yes Dave
You need a thumb pick to give it a little 'edge'
No I don’t thank you, happy as I am

Just get practicing if you would like to do these things, telling yourself how difficult it is will not help you.
