100% agreed.you had to stick to plastic protectors as opposed to the superior tempered glass protectors. Im so happy that i can now put a tempered glass protector on my s24U.
I also have a oneplus 12 which came with a pre-installed plastic protector, which is tough ( its thicker than your average plastic screen protector)
and although it shows heavy damage now, i dread removing it bc i know a 3rd party protector wont stick to the edges like the factory installed protector.
Im also happy that the oneplus 13 is expected to come out with a flat screen. I will for sure trade in my oneplus 12 for a oneplus 13.

I think saying the consumer drives the market and we choose function over form is very generous. Phones still have glass backs which is very impractical, they don't have headphone jacks, they prioritize thinness instead of making them thicker to allow more room for a bigger battery, plus they'd be easier to hold. We have screen cutouts for cameras, how is that practical? They got rid of LED notification lights, the list goes on.

    • @kenon6968

The consumer does drive the market. Samsung copied Apple for not having a headphone jack but people bought them anyways. Curved screens left because people didn’t want them. The iPhone mini failed since the market said people don’t want small phones.

    • @MichaelSheaAudio
      @MichaelSheaAudio 15 วันที่ผ่านมา

@@ganymedehedgehog371 Samsung saw the same potential as Apple in that they could take something away and sell you the solution, in this case, wireless earbuds. We'd be dealing in "what ifs", but I would think that Samsung is too big to fail, being the top smartphone manufacturer. Samsung dropped the headphone jack with the S20 in 2020, and at least in North America, who was left making flagship phones that people knew about and would gladly switch to? LG was on their last legs, HTC was dead, Huawei phones were banned in 2019, Sony is still around (my choice) but for dumb legal reasons, the fingerprint scanner was disabled. It still works on the international versions, so luckily I get those in Canada. Their only real competition was the Google Pixel, which even today only makes up about 12% of the North American market. Yes, the world is much more than just North America, but it's an example of where Samsung is at. It's not really Android vs iPhone, it's Samsung vs iPhone. When regular people walk into a store to buy a phone, they'll be greeted with Samsung and Apple as the top options. People were going to buy Samsung phones regardless because they're the top brand and regular people aren't going to do the research into other brands.
I can understand curved screens. I've never owned one, but I can tell they'd be awful to use. I don't understand the shift away from smaller phones though. I have smaller hands, so I picked out a relatively small phone that would be easier to handle. For a couple years I used the Sony XZ1 with a 5.2" screen, then in 2021, I got the Sony 5ii with a 6.1" screen, but it's only slightly taller and not as wide so it was a lateral move in terms of size, which is good. I don't know what the deal is with smaller phones, I wish they were more popular.
I don't believe brands removed features because people didn't want them though, it was probably more for form. Reviewers like Marques kept pushing and pushing for smaller bezels, thinner designs, and "premium feel". Useful features got in the way of achieving these goals, so they had to go, and I think phones are much worse than they could be because of it. If a phone is supposed to be an all-in-one media device, why are we missing headphone jacks, big batteries, and great internal stereo speakers? They've improved over time, but they could be so much better. Why are we putting glass on the back of phones when these are supposed to be able to withstand the abuse of being on the move?
There's so much I could say, I hate the path smartphones have taken and I have for many years now.

Would 100% use it over my s24+ or the flip 4 that ive had since then. Like my 24+ alright but don't like the squared off edge trend as it makes phones feel awkward to me in the hand unless you have a bulky case that can make it more hand-shaped(which is also awkward in just a different way). Overall, video was mostly inconclusive and only reason Samsung stopped making them is because it's A. Cheaper, and B. (Unlike apple) is a change of design. Because iphone 13 to present are subtle in differences.

Maybe Samsung is going away from overly curved screens because no one really wants them and Apple is doing well with their flat displays. Seriously who really asked for curved displays to begin with? When they first came out I'm pretty sure the majority of people hated it and wished Samsung and other phone makers would go back to making flat screens again.

Many of the Chinese phone brands still use curves. They're slightly curved on all sides, top, bottom, left, AND right, and it makes the phone feel so much nicer to use.
Basically, every edge has become its own function to swipe from. When it's flat, it feels far less comfortable than when it's slightly curved.
Personally, I prefer the curves. I'm currently using a Samsun S24 Ultra, all flat screen. I like the phone, but I certainly miss the tactile feeling of those curved displays.
I also miss how beautiful curved screens look, compared to the way flat screens look.

I've been using curved screens since 2016. No accidental touches, no glare 0 problems, and I always use a phone case on my $1K+ glass pocket computer because I'm not an idiot.
Actually, I remember when the Galaxy s10e came out, and everyone was complaining that it did not have curved edges.
Curved edges not only give it a sleeker look, thinner side bezels for a better edge to edge display, but it also feels nicer in the hand for those who don't use a case. Unlike iPhone a few years back, when people were complaining about it's sharp edges digging into their hands.
Did it serve any practicality? Not really other than getting rid of side bezels. The only real downside is a little bit more vulnerability to cracking when dropped.
Now I'm not saying curved edges are the future, or need to be on every phone, or are specifically a luxury feature, but I will say it is not a hindrance by any means. It's just a design feature, like choosing rims on a car.

It's sad how marketability cuts creativity. There have been so many amazing designs throughout history that were abandoned because of low marketability

Curved screen protectors were hard to find but I borrowed a 6S Edge way back in 2016 for two weeks and I never had any accidental touches. Honestly, phone companies need to take that big risk and just bring back the curved screen, just remove the side buttons for a way more integrated experience. Camera Control is a great example of what not to do, Steve Jobs said it himself, you can't add a button to a keyboard. But, if it was all one big screen, you could do anything you wanted with the space. The same goes for curved sides on Phones.

The curved screen on my old samsung was practically indestructible. Working in construction, i def had alot of accidents to test that on. I never put a protector on it.

It's expensive to make. The benefits are useless, and the phones break easier with poor repairability.
The S6 edge is one of the worst phones I've ever owned.
The S8+ fixed almost everything i hated about the S6 edge.
I switched to iphones after that until I made the jump to the Z fold 4 and S24 Ultra. Both are so much better than the old curved phones.

Never new there were phones that were curved inwards! That seems like a neat idea, actually. Especially when using your phone one-handed, having the display be higher up on the opposite side would make it easier to reach the other side of your screen with your thumb.

When I got my S22 Ultra I was quite confused about the screen protector as I wasted at least 5 of them before I managed to find out that fits. Now with the S24 Ultra my screen protector has been protecting it so well.

It became a curse on my Note 10+ when my cousin started playing clash of kings on it and accidentally dropping his troops in the wrong place.
Truth be told, I was all in for the Edge displays, the VR+Smartphone duo, the huge freaking cameras on the back and now the whole folding frenzy. I like innovation and there are enough rich people to pump those innovations forward. Of course they are impractical, they're outside the norm. Why settle for boring? But art and science is dead and profit is the only goal.

The thing with curved screens was that it had "more screen" which meant more glass which further related to an increased chance of damage and glass breaking which was also more expensive and difficult to repair/replace and thus they went out of trend

I still think that S6 and S7 Edges were one of the most gorgeous phones ever imo. I still remember how much I craved for S6 edge, when commercials were rolling for it.

Watching this on a flexible OLED!
Might be worth noting, iPhones with OLED panels use flexible OLEDs, tucking the end in towards the connector on the board. This allowed them to reduce the bezels.

Can I be honest? This video is my very first exposure to curved screen phones 🤷‍♂️. I had my last phone that was crappy even then for like 8 years and only recently updated to a new one so I must have missed all the in-between

I had the Samsung S7 Edge, it never had input issues. The real reason this didn’t catch on is simply because it has no functional advantage, it is purely for giving the appearance of a thinner bezels, but now days we can just have thinner bezels without the bend.

My Note 5 was so old that when it broke my insurance sent me a Note 8 as a replacement. The curved screen was so cool and futuristic that I absolutely fell in love with it. When I finally upgraded to the Pixel 8 Pro the flat screen was probably my favorite part.

I loved my S6 Edge. The features like, edge notifications, were awesome. And they were genuinely useful, and not just a gimmick!
