The adaptor you use is for MFD’s, kewtech make a dedicated set of plug in IP 2x pins so you can use your VI units safely as well as the MFD units, to prevent the false readings you describe.
Good explanation. But two point , 1) why did you test line to earth ? You should test line neutral and line earth. And neutral earth. 2)GS38 say we should not use a multimeter because we could set the wrong range? What’s to stop me setting the wrong function on my MFT ? All it takes is a small distraction or lack of concentration, I have made such a mistake and blew up my MFT had set for continuity instead of loop impedance damage was so bad it was beyond economical repair. Simple mistake due to a distraction.

Broken PENs are rare but real, an additional earth rod is now making noises within the industry 🤷♂️
