I get bags of each of all - and many manure bags (I like country manor) and I mix them all up in dustbins. Add perlite and vermiculite. No idea if it helps but like baking a cake or playing with a chemistry set it keeps me happy😂
Very interested to see the results of this experiment Mark! We've just built 3 huge pallet compost bins on our plot in anticipation of price rises - definitely the right thing for us, as the price of our go to bagged compost from the nearby farm shop rose by 20% this week!
Buy the cheapest compost you can, add coco coir, and vermiculite if you like, then sieve it, and voila! Great seedraising mix. When the seedlings get bigger they'll need some fertilizer of course.
Good to see someone else comparing, I look forward to the results. I did a comparison between M Grow and Sylvagrow comparing against my own PF and I wont spoil the fun by telling how mine turned out as I look forward to your results.
Hi Mark, im still catching up on your videos. It'd been raining her fir the past 2 days, but it has finally stopped. I'm not sure how long it will stay dry🤞 will be interesting to see if your seeds germinate in the 4 types of compost. Look foward to the next video. Thanks for sharing and take care 😊
On the upside with all these vids to watch you'll not have any problems getting to sleep 😂 I've been keeping an eye on the experiment each time I go down to the greenhouse. Need to thin out some of the plants with multiple germination, then its time to pot them up 👍🌱👍
I used to Levingtons m/p compost in the past. It was contaminated with weed killer… or something. The tomatoes suffered with weird deformed growth. All the discussion forums mentioned this problem with Levingtons and other similar priced compost. This year, I used Vitax Q4 and Evergreen m/p compost. I seemed to be having problems with the Vitax, so I did a comparison potting on of my chillies between the Vitax and Evergreen. The chillies potted on in the Evergreen, defo grew better in the Evergreen. So, at the moment, Evergreen peat free m/p compost is my number one choice.
Hi Mark - Seems a reasonably controlled experiment without going over the top, therefore will be interesting to view the result. It does appear that even if one purchased sack of compost is of reasonable material, the following batch often will be different esp. in texture. If I understand correctly, the black colouration is considered as an indication of high temperature decomposition favouring bacterial activity whereas dark brown may indicate a more balanced fungal / bacterial breakdown process. The latter considered as producing more of an idea final compost . For my set up: Sieved home compost has worked well over the years. Thank you for comparison.
I used Sylvagrow for the first time this year. No problem with germination, but the plants never moved on. Just don’t see the advantage of the stuff for the price. I buy mine now from Costco, sieve it and it’s ok, it’s cheaper and my unscientific observations are it has done better than the sylvagrow.but probably best that everyone tries the options and find what suits them.
Will watering from the bottom risk nutrients mixing between them all? I guess not enough to make a significant difference. Looking forward to seeing the results.

I reuse all my compost, empty pots, sieve, mix in vermiculite, perlite and slow release fertiliser and fill up pots again. Jo Devon 🙂

🐝Thanks for the great video🌻
I’ve got access to the best compost ever. I wish you well with your stuff 🤩

Silvergrow hasn’t had the best write up recently. I do believe it matters how people use it & watering makes a huge difference with compost success 🤩
Fantastisch Good work Mark compost the zaailing groente thans te video Top Sunday ✔️⛅😅🌞🌱🌺🏵️☘️
The only issue I have found with peat free composts is they are filling them up with wood , plastic and even glass fragments , it’s scandalous .
I only use Clover (peat) £4 for 60L, you don’t even have to sieve it as there’s no bits in it… every bag of peat free I’ve bought has been sh ite …
