He’s dissing the televangelist just like Lex said. Not religion in general. Just the ones putting on a show, selling salvation. And then you see them in the tabloids for nailing their secretaries. Seemed to happen often in the 80’s
Ya thats what i liked about the song.....religious types are annoying but mostly harmless....and these televangelist scum use religion to take peoples money (mostly elderly ones, too most on a fixed income) ......they are the lowest forms of life on this planet

As a devout Christian for about half my life now ( 20 years) I've felt and viewed this song from a couple of perspectives. I still quite enjoy it and view it as a valid rebuke of the greedy for gain/TBN type of false believers more than a poke at all religious people and belief.
As a a fellow Brother In Christ I feel the same way. It's a rebuke of the Jim & Tammy Faye Baker's of the world

Also Christian here this is one of my favorites, it’s not dissing religion or Christianity just televangelists and those fake preachers who want to make a quick buck off of gullible people. As a whole I don’t believe they’re trashing christianity as a whole.

During live streams Orion often gets requested and Brad is hesitant because there are no lyrics. During this and your Master of Puppets reaction I heard the term "my speed". I am near certain you will like it. And Metallica fans cannot wait much longer for Lex to have a possible out of body experience.

i learned to play drums from rock star and guitar hero when they added drums. now i can play drums no shit.
She also seems to have a very good ear, she nails the song's/singer's key every time!
Master of puppets was the first metal album excepted into the Library of Congress's National Recording Registry for its cultural influences and significance. Orion is a significant part of that album and Metallica's history. Besides that it's what your fans want. Why not give it to them? Not only will you give us what we want but I'm certain you both will enjoy it and it will complete your reaction to this album in its entirety.

This song is very much aimed more at the televangelists, and not so much the church as a whole. One of my all time favorite Metallica songs, and iMO one of the best. Love the reaction. 🤘🏻
I feel they were always wary of losing their audience by dissing religion as a whole so they would criticize only certain sects, I have no proof of this though it's just an unfounded hypothesis

I really enjoyed seeing Brad react positively to this one... I'm a music producer, so I'm always trying to see how people react to certain elements of music and watching Brad, I've come to realize that there are certain frequencies that some people just don't jive with. Brad seems to not enjoy some of the higher frequencies, but definitely gets down to the lower ones, especially when there is a descending chord progression. I find this channel really educational, but also super entertaining.
While I'm rambling, may I suggest checking out "Orion" by Metallica. I bet you'll both love it. It's beautiful

My dudes James Hetfield grew up playing piano around 3-4 years old and played classical pieces and his mother was an opera singer he grew up on listening and learning classical style of music making at 15 he picked up his first guitar by 17-18 he made his first album “Kill’em All”
James palm mutes are what makes the first mini solo so good which he’s a master of palm muting lol
“The god that Failed” is another reference to the Christian Science and about how god failed to heal his mother

God did not fail,he blesses doctors the knowledge that could have helped James parents get well,but they trusted in Christian Science,which is a doctrine that doesn't believe in doctors and medicine,so man failed here not God.
I get the feeling Brad might enjoy Load/ReLoad era Metallica more than any other. He doesnt seem to enjoy the thrash solos, so maybe the more bluesy style of the Load era is more his speed.
Lex might enjoy that era also because of the layered texture of their sound with tracks like Bleeding Me, House Jack Built, Devil's Dance, Fixxxer, Outlaw Torn.
I know I’m in the minority here (oh, boy have I felt some backlash from what I’m about to say and have said for years) but I absolutely LOVE those albums. I’ve been a Metallica fan since just before the Black Album (born in the early 80’s) yet can’t stand anything after ReLoad. I, personally, think that Load and ReLoad were great points in their musical history.
@@alexanderzadoroznyj Have you heard their new album? I too wrote off Metallica when they put out St Anger and Death Magnetic, but their newest stuff was actually much closer to their Load sound. Best songs: Moth into Flame, Halo on Fire, Atlas Rise, Now That We're Dead, Spit Out the Bone. All great songs imo.
@@TenTonNuke I actually haven’t heard much of it. I’ll give it another go. But from I heard off of Sirius, I ended up changing the station. Something about the riffs and vocal cadence just seemed… I dunno… amateur? But perhaps I was going in with a biased mentality because of the prior albums.
@@alexanderzadoroznyj Check out Spit out the bone. It's the best song theyve released since AJFA. Overall, Hardwired is a solid record. Not jaw dropping or anything, but solid.

But since it is Metallica and those albums strayed from the traditional Thrash/Heavy metal sound... people shit on it. Load and Reload are really damn good albums, I agree
this entire album was just perfection. The peak of thrash metal! Every song is so perfectly written from both lyrical and composition point of view

So glad you guys did this hidden gem! As a guitarist I would call that first 'mini solo' a 'lead break', where the next phase of the song is breaking out, with a kickass lick in a higher register to set the tone of what's to come!! there are many of these in Metallica songs, like Battery, Trapped Under Ice, Damage inc. - all badass! Keep up the great work!
In the 7th grade we brought in music and explained the lyrics to the class. I brought in this song. Everyone looked at me like I had just admitted to using heroin. I was a very mature child.
I did the same thing at school with "One"
I had the first two albums. Then an older kid in my junior high school asked me, “Have you heard the new album?” He let me hear the opening to this song, and I think I bought the album before the week was out. One of my favourite Metallica songs still!

Master of Puppets is Metallica at their peak IMO. Ride the Lightning and And Justice for All are also great but MoP will always be #1 for me. Great reaction! Glad that you liked the song.

Crazy when I think of this but I first heard Metallica in May of ‘84 when a friend loaned me his Ride The Lightning cassette. I had that cranked up full blast in my boom box for at least 6 months and listened to it in its entirety a minimum of 4 times a day. I just turned 55 a few weeks ago and been listening to them 38 years now. Have seen them 4 times in 4 States with all 3 bassists. Crazy

I always liked this song. It's one of the secondary songs of Master of Puppets (if there's any, really) and I had the chance of watching them playing it live. It was a perfect rendition of the album's version. 🙂

One of the most brliliant elements in this song is that call and response at the beginning between Cliff's bass and James' guitar.

This was one of my favorites growing up.
Yes, that is very much James' personaliry... he's the rock within Metallica, for sure. He expects and gives loyalty, and he expects and gives commitment. Ironically, he's also probably the innately most shy.

I remember driving my first brand new car a Ford Escort GT bright Red. Constantly playing this Cassette Tape and jamming to every song. To this day it's in my top 5.
For Whom The Bell Tolls and Leper Messiah…both songs stand out to me as the best of the best of Metallica since the rest of both albums are legendary from beginning to end
They have a signature way of playing a lot of their riffs with a strong and accurate tempo. The bass guitar hits almost like a secondary precussion. They keep time with it. IMO no other band had or has better sounding riffs than pre 1995 Metallica. The good news is they had like 4-5 albums worth of mostly excellent songs in those years.
The song about his parents that you were trying to recall is Dyer's Eve.
Well, "The God That Failed" was more directly an indictment of his parents' beliefs, but they've probably not got to the less known Black Album songs yet.

My favorite band growing up
What you tend to think being a small solo are in usually an "interlude", a "bridge", a "fill/lick" or even "breakdown". Solos are almost always easy to distinguish from the all other parts of a song that has a solo in it. It's one of the fastest things you'll learn, with metal especially.
In this case the first "solo" was in fact an interlude. Which you can see as a tease for the solo. Hinting a solo is pretty common in metal music by changing the vibe in a way that creates and builds anticipation for it.
That "Lower End" range is known as the "Cliff Burton Effect". RIP
It was written by Cliff Burton, their bass player, along with Master of Puppets. He was a Julliard graduate and he can make a bass sound like nothing else. This is why I have said you should listen to his solo Pulling Teeth. When you hear it and realize it is done on a 4 string bass you really appreciate the talent
i personally believe he was the best bassist I've ever heard, no one else is even close, it was truly tragic to lose him... but that loss also brought us some amazing things from the rest of the band. you can tell that James specifically never forgot Cliff and how close they were and how much he meant

Over the years of me listening to Metallica this has grown to be basically my favorite song off this album, it’s just the one that I tend to play the most and it gets me groovin the most.

I can't remember, have you guys reacted to The Thing That Should Not Be from this album? I know you still haven't reacted to Orion because of Brad's hesitancy over it being an instrumental, but I know both of you would like it. Just sayin'. Lol! Plus, they have other instrumentals that are awesome.
James is 100% direct, he is no games, he is genuine and authentic, honest, thats why he has dominated for 40yrs, nobody keeps it 110% like that guy... number 1 band of all time.

Hetfield's opinion was rich given that they really should've done a side project for their softer 90s albums and maybe a punk project for St. Anger, then returned to metal.

Yes, James upbringing was very sad. He had no idea how to mourn because he was not even allowed to mourn his own mother after she passed. That’s why he took Cliffs tragic death sooo so hard. I just wanna go back in time to give him a hug.

This is the first time I ever played drums to a song, on a drum set. This is when I realized I might have some rhythm.. A long while ago... Since I'm reminiscing, this is also when I realized that my guitarist sucked. So this is also when I started playing guitar. The first Metallica song i learned was Am I Evil. I said this three times or four including this one or five including that one.

the energy Lex has is what i get when listening to old Metallica my first record was And Justice for All when i was 11 years old and i was sold, if it werent for Metallica i would probably be a criminal now, i had to get my anger out and Metallica's music gave that ot me.
