Thanks Tony, I'll never forget going to my first bonsai club meeting. A guy rocks up with this massive impressive bonsai for a club crit. I was like 'wow' and asked him what the history of the tree was. He replied 'I grew it from seed 30 years ago'. He still sows seeds today.
Lovely video Tony, nice to see you working on your mums table, joke. My latest from seed are still either cherry or plum or both, but have regularly done lemon. Also succeeded with almonds, germination is better than keeping them alive, from 14 I've got 3. Got some spruce and pine to have a go with so will try. Some maples and whitebeam I have outside haven't done anything neither have the acorns, still hoping with them. Keep growing.xx
I enjoy your love of propagation Tony. Either from seeds, or from cuttings, I derive great joy when I succeed,. And I’m not that sad when I fail, because there will ALWAYS be more seeds to sow! I gave you a shout-out on my channel today, touting your wiring bravery! Cheers.
Cheers for the shout out Steve. I'll check it out now! You make a good point about the success of these propagation techniques, it really is no big deal because as you say, there will always be more seeds.
@@TonysBonsai ,,, I know you’re joking but don’t sell yourself short. It’s your creativity that separates you from the pack. Additionally you’ve inspired your viewers to take chances and not just play it safe. Looking forward to purchasing my first tree from Tony’s Bonsai Nursery. Thanks, keep growing
🤣🤣I'll look forward to sending you one mate. I think 2023 is going to be a brilliant year updating and working on all my projects, not to mention the stuff I've got planned still to create.
They grow well for you! I love growing things from seed and watching them change. Watching them transform into trees or start to flower, yield fruit/veggies. It's a very good feeling!
I’m with you I love growing anything from seed even though at the age of 62 I’m never going to see most of them through to fruition. I think I’m just a plantsman and it makes me happy.
Yes, There is a joy in growing, and as you say you'll never see them as very mature bonsai, you could well see them as pretty nice trees. You better keep exercising and taking those vitamins mate!
Ive had scots and black pines sprouting since the end of September! By spring I should have well over 100! The tissue in the fridge/ window sil method is by far the best. Talkin of scots pines. My local nature reserve have been redesigning the car park area and they dug up a 7 foot pine and chucked it on the recycling pile. Needless to say it is now planted in my garden. Winning!
I love starting a tree from seed very enjoyable to watch them progress, I like to do what Terry Erasmus does to his pines once they grow a bit I take a cutting pines can be very leggy
Grear work on this video Tony. Sometimes I feel propagation by seed is difficult for me personally. I like what you are doing with the early wiring, get that movement in now! Thank you for sharing!!
A great experiment. I normally have good success with your second approach; planting outside in some bonsai soil. Nice video mate, thank you for sharing
I really enjoy planting a few pine seeds myself Tony. Last few years I grew jpb and austrian BP. This year managed to get some jwp. Just planted up last weekend 🤞 Never tried scotts pine. Next year! Hope yours all pull through the wiring process 👍
Sounds like you've got a nice little production line on the go there mate. I suspect a few of my pines will die with this wiring, but that's fine. I think it's worth it to get some interesting trunks.
I'm agree with you Tony, starting from seed and is like giving birth to a future bonsai, and i wire most of my seedlings and cuttings in their first year to start good movement in the trunks..nothing wrong with that mate, you have to be light handed and gentle with them but usually its successful and tree's grown from seed end up with nice trunk flare compaired to my cuttings i find. Hope they grow well for you.🌱
The more I get into bonsai, the more I am seeing the value in starting with young material. It's great working on a big old yamadori, but it is all about dealing with problems. With young trees we can design them to hopefully be fault free to a certain extent.
Nice work, I've got a dozen or so Black pines I bought last year as seedlings and wired them immediately. Some of them do look a bit ropey but they have buds so I'm hoping for a strong growing year this year to start fattening them up. I also lean towards to making really small trees so seedlings are perfect!
Its an addiction to watch things grow and progress over time as u manipulate everything that goes on in its life and care for it. I tried from seeds but they died. I got too busy but may try again this spring. Ive also watched momiji-en put a screen lightly on top of them and as they grow they bend into the screen on top of them to get some twists. Hes got a very good maple channel if u havnt heard of him
Hi Chris. That sounds like a fantastic method. I am subscribed to his channel, but I've not watched one of his for a while. I'm off to take a look now mate
That was really interesting to see Tony. i have not tried seed propagation in my entire 22 years. However, last year I started. so hopefully some of those seeds will actually germinate this spring?
Tony, the seedlings look very, very healthy 👌. I had not much luck with use of regular mineral bonsai soil for sowing conifers and I'm going to return to more organic composition. If you could once again give us the soil recipe? And another question about cutting off the whole root part of very young seedlings to create compact well ramified small form. Are you considering this technique? There's a fiew videos on YT showing it.
Hi PAwel. Yes I am going to try that technique in a furure video. I have plenty of little seedlings so I'm going to test it out. I know bonsiafy does well cutting off all the roots. My soil is pine bark, grit, perlite and compost in equal parts, but I have just this morning ordered a load of coco coir which I will be using going forward instead of the compost for certain trees, and pines are definitely in that group.
when I repot, I place a small flat stone under the trunk to help with root spread. Also, you seem to have a lot of new plants, are you selling any of them? I have hundreds of seedlings and cuttings. I am planning to sell most of them (just for fun).
If may I give a suggestion: it would be desirable to cut the taproot in that repot. In fact, with pines, I do it as early as when the first real lives appear.
I cut the odd tap root off, but I'm not sure if it was becasue I already disturbed the roots last year but many of them didn't really seem to have one strong tap root.
Hi Ian. Thanks mate. I tend to keep in touch with people on here in the comments, but if it is for something specific, you can email me on anthonyhigginsonphotography@gmail.com
I don't think there is a right or wrong way. If I was you I would wire at least a few of them now just to compare the different techniques to see what works out best
@TonysBonsai to be honest I struggle getting them to live past 6" so I'm letting them grow as healthy as possible first as I had around 50 saplings last year and they all grew well and as soon as they all started to get to 6" they all started dying one by one 🤣

I grew some Austrian and black pines last year. So fulfilling seeing them come up. Enjoyed your video and good to see you looking well.
Cheers Peter. Those Austrians are vigorous growers. Are they out performing the JBP?
@@TonysBonsai Yes, they are certainly more advanced. The problem is keeping the growth tight but I'm giving it a go.
