When you hear your drag. Don't reel. Your getting nowhere and twisting your line. Learn to "play" the fish. It's surprising how many people do this. Set your drag resistance according to your line strength and hook strength if using braided Kevlar. Aberdeen hooks will straighten out with too much pressure. Also smaller hooks may rip out with too much pressure. You also consider drag with the kind of fish. Finesse vs hard hitting....crappie vs smallmouth. Overpowering a crappie will land you a set of lips and no fish. "unless hooked in the roof of the mouth" Too little pressure with a tougher mouthed fish may result in poor hook set and it just falling out. Smooth even pressure letting it run when there's too much and reeling when it starts to slack. Learn to work with your drag. It will land you more fish.
