Its getting scary out . I feel so bad for all the grads leaving college now. All of these layoffs are incredible morale breaking l. We all felt like tech was safe but it looks like NO industry is immune to massive layoffs.

I learned during the last recession that top performers are usually the ones laid off and companies care only about giving additional money to their shareholders. I was asked to produce a report with all positions and the amount paid in the last year. This was not unusual as these reports are used to determine bonuses, develop new positions, or give raises, etc. Was shocked when top performers started getting laid off left and right and replaced by inexperienced or low/average performers. One example is an employee who made $5m in annual sales deals for the company and was paid 2.5% bonus paid over each quarter was laid off because "she was too good and made too much bonus". She was replaced by her Assistant who started with the company 1 yr prior fresh out of college. They felt she had learned enough that she could sell as much at a much smaller bonus incentive. Needless to say they had a record loss the next year.

This is exactly it! Some tech companies are removing the degree requirement and training on the job to attract lower wage earners into these jobs. They actually need employees but want to pay them less.

Hey Bukola, I was impacted by the IBM layoff, and it was tough initially to think it wasn't about performance. The piece of advice I can give is regarding the employee's skillset and mental health. You should always invest time in people supporting you as your family, friends, and therapists, but also be aware/prepared - financially - that the tech industry might have some fluctuations now or in the future.

9:25 Such a great tip for program managers! Do not work on dead end programs and in dead end business units. The future is cloud so stay in that area. Or stay in the area that has stable ROI AND is innovative/evolving. This promises future programs and projects to keep you busy!

Bukola, this is my first time seeing your channel. A friend sent your video. I am very impressed. You gave the most intelligent and comprehensive breakdown of the tech layoffs that I have seen. The Fed is definitely playing a huge role and is hungry for more layoffs. I’m not really convinced with the over-hiring argument. As you pointed out the layoffs are mostly tied to particular projects that companies decided to jettison. But the Fed created this environment and continues to apply pressure. And major stockholders always want people fired, if it nets them more money. And they like driving down salaries. Thanks again.

I think the current situation is about how macroeconomics impact on the growth of profitability. The tech industry is progressive than other industries due to a higher risk. If they project the slow down, they will freeze hiring and layoffs. Other things probably miss the forecast and budget during the pandemic.

I think there's a problem with you all "IT Influencers": There's only Google, Meta, Microsoft, Apple, Amazon - nothing outside of these options - some of you maybe consider "start ups", but there isn't anything in the middle. I work in a large insurance company in London - 60k+ employers around the world, and my Team in the last year increase from 14 to 35 members, all the promotions and bonuses are on place - the salary is very good (maybe not as good as Google): But there's no layoff. Stop thinking only in Google or Apple, the world is more than that...

    here's the thing:
our USA government is notorious for greatly & deliberately UNDERREPORTING the *real* inflation numbers. for instance, this includes the fact that re: the annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) many items are NOT Included in that calculation. including but not limited to TWO items that, I promise, no one lives without or should have to live without if they don't have enough [due to the cost of living and/or access:
    FOOD & FUEL.
how many of us know of *anyone* who lives without food & also in some form or fashion, fuel? or greatly need food and fuel? as well, those who wonder why they can't keep up with inflation. this is largely the reason why, along with the fact that the purchasing power of traditional fiat currency is shrinking by the minute, since the early 1970's it has been reduced by 80% to 90%, after Nixon took the US dollar off the gold standard..which he claimed would be "temporary" but of curse, that was not the truth at all.
    another fact:
the official CPI numbers are what is used to 'calculate' how much of an increase is given in Social Security Retirement, SS Disability, Veteran's and many other citizens benefits. now, just imagine why so many of our most vulnerable citizens, including our elder retirees and those on Disability are struggling financially. why so many are having to choose between food, medicine and the light bill.
also, we've been in a recession for quite some time and the those at the top of at Fed & The Treasury, including Jerome Powell & Janet Yellin, also know this because Powell actually very publicly announced that the official definition of what a 'recession' is was going to be adjusted.
traditionally, the word, 'recession has meant:
a period of economic decline in which economic activity/industrial activity/trade are reduced, noted by a fall in the Gross Domestic product (the GDP) in two successive quarters.
and, well folks, we've been in that place for quite some time. however with dishonest official government reporting of economic stats, such as the CPI numbers being woefully underreported, it's nearly impossible for the average everyday householder to know what's really going on. but most people are *feeling* what's going on when because it affects their pocket books & for the banked, their checking account balance.
as well, the experience it every time they go to the grocery store or the gas station..or when they buy a commuter's bus ticket.
one last thing about all the corporate layoffs:
yes, there are a handful of factors..one of which, all around the world [including in the USA] corporations are obligated to maximize investor profits, no matter what. so I'm sorry to report that IF layoffs are the solution or part of the solution that, as always, is what happens. and I'm so sorry that it's the most powerless in at a corporation, the employees, who suffer the most.👩🏾‍🏫

Layoffs are a great way to arbitrage labor and try to bring down salaries.

I considered going into tech…chose healthcare instead…any job that primarily requires making software is going go be phased out very soon due to AI

    • @MsEssance
      @MsEssance ปีที่แล้ว

Most jobs that primarily require making software will not be phased out anytime soon due to AI. AI can automate the manual aspects of software development, such as code writing, testing, and debugging, but AI cannot replace the creative and innovative aspects of software development. AI can be used to help improve the efficiency of software development, but it cannot replace the human element. Ultimately, AI cannot replace the need for human input and creativity when it comes to creating software.

@@MsEssance beyond that. Software development is a meme. Most programming jobs eventually become maintenance/ support operations for successful products or services. It has very little to do with creativity or innovation at that point. Just need someone who can keep the money coming in while the business is making sales.
