As the seventeenth century came to a close in England many noble patrons were busy supervising their own building works. Lord Carlisle in 1699 commissioned, an acquaintance from the Kit Cat Club a haunt of the Whig grandees John Vanbrugh, to draw up classical designs for his new Country House.
