  • As the seventeenth century came to a close in England many noble patrons were busy supervising their own building works. Lord Carlisle in 1699 commissioned, an acquaintance from the Kit Cat Club a haunt of the Whig grandees John Vanbrugh, to draw up classical designs for his new Country House. Castle Howard in Yorkshire is today probably the most dramatic of all the Great Treasure Houses in England and Wales. www.thecultureconcept.com/circle/
