- Are you ready to get started with Adobe Fresco? This video was made for those you that aren't too familiar with Adobe Fresco, but even if you are, I'll be talking about my workflow and giving some tips that I use-so I guess it's for everyone! Follow along with me as I go through the different tools, brush settings, layer options, motion tools and more.
There are a few reasons why Fresco is my preferred drawing app over other apps, like Procreate. { Here's a video that goes deep into that comparison: • Adobe Fresco vs Procre... }
Fresco is part of the Adobe Creative suite and works seamlessly with the other apps, like Photoshop and Illustrator. As a professional illustrator I'm almost always dealing with photoshop and illustrator documents as they're the industry standard.
Let me know if you learned anything new, and don't hesitate to ask questions in the comments. I try to respond as quickly as I can! I post new videos every Tuesday-so don't forget to subscribe!

Another awesome Fresco video - thanks, Chris. By the way, you mentioned the ‘Learn’ content on the home screen. It actually contains excellent walk-throughs and videos to teach users how to use Fresco. So, yet another cool feature that distinguishes it from the competition.
Thanks Kyle! I appreciate you taking the time to check out my videos and respond to comments! That’s super cool of you.
Oh my, the brush god left a comment!
My adhd and I need a super basic tutorial with someone who speaks quickly but leaves enough time to follow along, step by step. This isn't working for me 😢
You have a crack version of it share the link plz
I've been playing around with fresco for ages but my adhd is so bad that sitting down for a tutorial is hard, glad I finally did :)
I know how that goes!
Same 😢😢😢 struggling...0:25
Same it’s hard😢
Honestly, the killer tool is the seamless vector work/tools. It's by FAR the easiest and most intuitive way I've ever worked with vectors, and absolutely love it. Thank you for your channel and your hard work, your art is super rad, and appreciate your Fresco knowledge!
Agreed, thank you!
Thanks so much for doing this tutorial (and also showing me you can push through that “I really hate this” feeling and be brave and just share what you are doing. I know that feeling!! 😊) This was really super helpful for me to get the basics.
Glad it was helpful! For me "I really hate this" is just one of the steps in the process, lol.
First off, I'd like to say thank you. I've been following along and have been loving it.
Over he years, I've been through quite a few tablet gadgets including Wacom, Bamboos, Intuous - always wanted a Cintique but could never justify the cost. Go an iPad mini, pencil, fresco (Adobe CS), and now brushes
I too think this is a game changer!
Glad this was useful! The iPad + fresco really is a great combo!
I just started using Fresco and I’m not an artist at all. Video was very helpful and I’m impressed that all of this is available in a free tool.
Glad this was helpful!
I really like your transformation and improvements from your first videos to now… your presentation skills and feel has become more viewable and I’ve definitely subscribed…. Well done on all your achievements. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you. I appreciate the feedback.
Thank you my dear. Your opening was sort of intense, but when you got into your obvious comfort zone I learned a great deal!
Hah sorry for the intensity.
You have convinced me to try Fresco just for the animation features alone. Great tutorial!
Thanks! Have fun!
🎉 Thank you! That was super helpful. I like the modified brush for erasing.
Glad it was helpful!
Cheers Chris. As a seasoned illustrator and Photoshop user, I’m just about to move my illustration workflow on to the iPad and was heading towards Procreate. I think watching just a couple of your vids, I’m swaying towards Fresco. Keep up the good work
Glad it was helpful!
This video was super helpful. I have worked with a variety of tools before and wanted exactly this level of info. Perfect! Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Hell yeah. I subbed earlier this week. Wishing you well on your channel, mahn. The tutorials are magic.
Thanks so much!
Thank you so much this helped me soo much i am new and was so overwhelmed with all the options now i can least use basic start something 💜💜
Glad I could help! ☺️
This video was so great so straight forward! This is really going to help me with my portfolio. Thank you for sharing!
So glad to hear!
thanks Chris! this is really helpful. cast to my tv or use picture in picture on the ipad as i practice with fresco really helped me grasp this
Glad it helped!
Love this channel, your style of teaching and videos are great!
Thanks so much! I appreciate that!
Playing with the paths really speeds up the animating. Thank you for a great tutorial
Glad you liked it! Paths definitely make it so fast to add some movement.
Great beginner tutorial👍🏼! I’m using Procreate and I feel quite limited if I wanna animate with it, but this tutorial was so nice explained that I feel I can start to do simple animation in Fresco😊.
Glad it was helpful! Check out today’s video, I think it will be more helpful: th-cam.com/video/5IDJWtePRAc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=TEjFQ2GIUCHgUiYC
Thanks so much for this video. It was right to the point, and made me a user a fresco!
Glad it helped!
Thanks! I just started doing digital art and already prefer fresco
Thanks for the comment!
Bought an ipad recently, for UX sketching. Was researching procreate vs Fresco, and I found this video. Yup, fresco definitely ! Loved your tutorial, followed every sketch, love how it turned out!
Thanks so much!
Same here but one month later. 🤗
Thank you very much for this video. Your videos are the Best👍👍🤙
Thank you so much!!😎😎😎
Just subscribe to fresco today I’ve always loved the brushes so I can’t wait to finally give it a good try
Oh cool, have fun!
WOW thanks for this awesome tutorial. It helps a lot.❤
So glad to hear!
Hey, that was very well done and very helpful! Thank you, excited to try fresco
Great to hear!
Great tutorial! thank you!
You're welcome!!!
Thank you Chris!
My pleasure!
That was amazing. Liked and sub’d. Thanks for sharing!
Awesome, thank you!
Thank you so much for this! Very helpful 😃 Also your monster at the end made me laugh 😁
Glad you enjoyed it!
Had me at double taping the control button….I was wondering about a tool in Ai I used and have been wondering if it was in fresco. I found thro your tips 💪💪
Nice! Glad this was helpful!
Wonderful my name is Kirk! Thanks for going through all of this I love your work! 🎉
Thx Kirk. Let’s do a livestream soon.
very helpful tutorial. thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Love Fresco…🎉
Recently bought an ipad pro and wasnt sure whether to stick with adobe (been using ps and ai since 95!) But this is great, thank you
Happy to help!
Thank you so much!!!
You're welcome!!
thanks a lot for your dedication to create all this content1!!
Thank you!
Thanks for the info!
You bet!
Your videos are awesome much appreciated 🙏
Thanks so much!
@@chris-piascik have been using procreate last couple years watched tons of tutorials and still felt like I didn’t know how to use it to its full potential. Got fresco last night after watching your vids and feel like i already know more than i did in procreate. Really dope
That’s really great to hear! Thanks for letting me know.
Thank you !
You're welcome!
I love you, thank you for everithing
Thank you so much ❤️
ahhh! so cool seeing my name all piascik'd up!
Glad you like it!!
Chris, THANK YOU so much for your videos. You are opening up worlds of possibility for me as a beginner with this app. I don’t know the best way to ask a question, but here goes… Is there a way to easily close a shape, either with the pixel or vector brush (or some other tool)? Or do you have to keep drawing and then clean it up? (The Touch Shortcut and Vector Trimming tips you gave are super helpful.)
So glad this was helpful. I can’t think of any easy way to close a shape without fully drawing it though. You maybe be able to snap to shape when you’re close to closing it.
Thank you! This was SUPER helpful. Adobe needs to pay you because I learnt more from you in this video than I did from their "learn" feature.
Hah thanks so much! That’s nice to hear!
@@chris-piascik I just applied some of your tips to a drawing I had been working on and the improvement is HUGE. Thank you so much!
@itsmuffinbear ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for this video it was so helpful ❤😊
I'm so glad!
Thank you great introduction
You are welcome!
Really cool. The integration with Adobe ecosystem is much like Apple's ecosystem of devices -- once you get a sip of it, you're hooked. Also, the gif-making capability is awesome!
Thanks!
Just stumbled upon your channel - some absolutely amazing content on there!! This video included! I definitely prefer adobe fresco to procreate even after just a week of trying fresco. There is just something limiting about procreate's too-simplified interface that I never really jelled with. With Adobe fresco, I feel like I have more control and I love how it works with the rest of the adobe suite! Thanks for this introduction video. It's great getting a quick overview and this video is top quality, so a joy to watch! Can't wait to see your content and channel grow in the future :)
Thank you so much; I really appreciate your thoughts and glad my video was helpful!
Thank you so much. I tried playing around for a while and was losing my mind on how to make a clipping mask >
Glad I could help!
hello, great video, where can I purchase the retro inker brush from? - thank you
So helpful! Thank you. Do you have a video that goes into greater depth about the texture layer option you did with the paper texture?
Thanks! I think my recent video about Layers in Fresco goes into that a bit.
Nice introduction to Fresco
Thanks ☺️
Great video! I'm very interested in learning Fresco now.
Any suggestions on which sized iPad to buy? Are you using the 11" or the 12.9" iPad Pro? Would you recommend one over the other?
Thank you! I use the 12.9” iPad Pro, but I also like drawing on my iPad mini. I think that it comes down to preference. It’s so easy and intuitive to zoom in and out while working on an iPad that the screen size doesn’t seem to be a huge issue.
Hey Chris, absolutely love these videos. I currently use fresco on my laptop, but I’m looking to make the jump to iPad. Question: do I need to buy the new iPad or what iPad do you feel is good enough for the next few years regarding working with fresco. Thank you so much for your insight and I appreciate you. MCC
Thanks so much! I’m still rocking a 2021 iPad Pro with the M1 with no issues. I’ll upgrade to the new one, but only because I’m an Apple nerd. But even that didn’t make me want to upgrade to the last version. The iPad’s especially the Pros have been overpowered for a long time now. Also Fresco was built from the ground up for the iPad so it’s extremely well optimized for it. It runs fine even on my old iPad mini. I’d say any iPad with a M1 (and up) chip is going to be very solid and last many years without feeling underpowered. My wife is also an illustrator and has the M1 iPad Air and that works great too.
Hello Chris, great video... I enjoyed watching this, I do have one rather big issue... ive been drawing an image... i use the bucket tool in areas of the image as youve demonstrated but... it continuous chooses to paint the full page with said color... I also tried using (paint within the lines) tool and that was completely ignored ... so i am very much on the verge of deleting the app and going back to illustrator but i dont suppose you know how or what option I can choose to amend this?
It sounds like you might need to lower the fill margin (the slider that pops up when you use the paint bucket), if that doesn’t work you may have inadvertently set a layer as a reference layer.
Thanks! The reason you can mix vector and raster is because the layers need to be either vector or raster, if you used a vector brush on a layer that wasn’t vector it wouldn’t be vector. Hopefully that makes sense!
Awsome!
Thanks!
WOW thanks for the video! Question.. what would be the reason to ever use raster? Wouldn't you always want vector so you can modify the paths if you need to?
Glad you liked it! There’s some things that vector just can’t do, like realistic texture and subtle gradations in tone/texture. Both realism and natural analog texture style are both nearly impossible with vector.
Thank you this really helps! By the way In adobe fresco can you Live Symmetry or Live Mirroir thing? I've been struggling to find it.
Thanks! Glad it was helpful! fresco doesn’t have symmetry currently, but I think it’s coming.
Thanks
No problem 😌
Great video.
Thanks!
So.. I've been using procreate.. but your vids talked me into getting Fresco and I gotta say.. i think I like it better than procreate. I feel like it's more user friendly. I dunno. Good content.
Thanks! fresco is a really app and Adobe keeps making it better all the time.
I loved your monster 🧡
☺️☺️☺️☺️
Thanks for your tutorial!
Some reason the bottom left of the screen is not responding to my brush
Everywhere else I am able to draw
Do you know why this would be?
Glad it was helpful. Unfortunately I have no idea what could cause that unresponsiveness? Is a tablet? Maybe it needs to be recalibrated?
Hey! How do I make outlines around text so that I can paint inside those outlines to have a more cleaner look and finish??
I draw the outlines when I do that kind of thing, but if you use the vector brushes you can choose the outline brushes.
Do you use certain settings on the basic vector brush in fresco?
I am pretty sure I just use the basic brush and adjust the smoothing as needed.
Hi Chris, where can I buy a pair of good gloves for drawing like this? Any brand or materials recommended?
I just use random ones from Amazon bc I always lose them. Huion makes a decent one.
Hey Chris, thank you for being the beacon of light that you are. You are a beacon of light.
I'm brand new to Fresco and wondered if it's only photoshop brushes that are compatible or can you import illustrator brushes also? On stores like Retro Supply Co the PS brushes seem to be raster only and so for vector brushes I assume you would need to buy the Illustrator brushes to use in Fresco?
Cheers!
Thanks so much! Unfortunately you can’t import illustrator or other vector brushes into Fresco. The only thing you can do it load presets, but those are limited in what can be achieved. I’m hoping someday we’ll be able to import illustrator brushes.
@@chris-piascik Thank you for the speedy response! You're brimming with light. A true beacon.
No worries, I shan't lose sleep over it but good to know, thank you!
I need this app for a school project, and I was wondering that if you could do a tutorial on this app but without a pen. Because my iPad doesn't have a pen. That would really help.
Hi, unfortunately I don't think I'll be able to get that done, but most of it should be the same, just without the precision and pressure sensitivity of the pencil.
Just a question as you say , the photoshop brushes from retrosupply also work in fresco ?
Thank you
Yes! Fresco uses Photoshop brushes :)
Great videos. Thank you. One simple question to anyone. In the animation example you were able to adjust properties while animation was playing. When I hit play the properties are hidden. I’m sure simple solution I am missing.
Thanks! I think you can toggle it on and off with the effects option to the right of the path setting.
Thanks Chris, got it.
No problem! Glad you got it sorted out.
Great video!
Is there an easy to just just select a layer? I imported a photoshop file with like.. 100 layers haha. I want to be able to easily be able to select a layer without having to dig through all the layers.
Hmm like autoselect in PS? That would be cool but I don’t know of a way to do anything similar.
I've watched this multiple times (THANK YOU!) and am about to create a logo for a company and have maybe a basic question: Why would you want to have rastor AND vector art in the same file? Why not just go vector the whole time? Thanks for any insights!
The Vector file is good because it can be infinitely scaled without loosing its quality. You could start with the rastor file for sketching then use Fresco Vector Brushes for the final work. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Thanks! @@chris-piascik I get that, but why not just use vector for everything? Is it that the vector brushes are less malleable? I would think using only vector would save time? Thoughts? THANK YOU! :)
I'm researching which digital art program to use w a good learning curve. Thinking fresco, I already use Adobe for creating PR work. Can I use the Procreate templates in fresco? I'm not a fine artist, but I want to start making IG templates and brushes to make passive income.
I think Fresco is definitely the most versatile. I’m not 100% sure about the templates as I don’t know what they are.
I just found out fresco is free and I absolutely love the pencil. excellent tutorial! Helped me a lot to start out, thanks! ❤
You are so welcome!
11:40 try the continue filling in procreate it the same thing.
Yeah it’s mostly the same, but it can be a little more annoying when adjusting the fill margins.
Your videos are amazing. The background, though amazing is a bit distracting. Maybe, it’s just me. I like to focus on what you’re showing completely as it is basically an educational tool. Is there any way to show the whole of the iPad screen whenever you’re showing it? IDK. Just a thought. Anyways, thank you so much for a detailed Fresco tutorial. Kudos. 🎉🎉❤
Thanks, I try to go back and forth because a lot of people find it helpful to see what my hands are doing.
@@chris-piascik That totally makes sense. Maybe use a passive background and zoom onto the parts of the video when needed (maybe in post). It’s just that it’s a bit difficult to read the stuff on the iPad with its distance from the camera. Just a suggestion. Your work rocks!!
thank you bro!
❤❤❤
Hi there, could you tell me which brush package/bundle to buy for the classic anchor? I want to use it in fresco but I’m not sure under which category (photoshop or illustrator) the item is listed. Thanks for your help!:)
The classic inker? That’s in their liner set, fresco uses photoshop brushes.
Yes, the classic inker. Thank you for letting me know.
Is it also possible to install your illustrator brushes onto fresco?
What would those sketches in your background be called? I want to learn how to sketch those, and am trying to find a book! Thanks
Oh hmm, that's just a pattern I made. It's just my illustration style-but I'd say it's a mix of retro, cartoon, illustrative lettering.... I don't know if there any specific books aside from my own, but those are just pictures and not tutorials. I do have videos on this channel where I talk about my style and process if that helps.
شكرًا جزيلًا ❤️
😁😁
Is the vector art that we do is printable on T-shirts ?
Yes, you can use it for anything. But it will work well for shirts.
How do you keep working from fresco and then on illustrator keeping the files vector?
You can send your fresco file directly to illustrator in the save/export menu.
Hey ! Beginner artist here, (who honestly is not doing well financially) I am just wondering what options are good options for a more affordable ipad / tablet (i literally do my art on and iphone se)
Thank you !
Hi! Non-pro model iPads have been able to use the Apple Pencil for a while now. And iPads have been very powerful for a while now too, so in my opinion the best budget option would be to find an older iPad used or refurbished with the first generation pencil. The original pencils worked just as well as the new ones they just charge a bit more clumsily. You can find what iPads work with the Apple Pencil here: support.apple.com/en-us/HT211029#:~:text=You%20can%20use%20Apple%20Pencil%20(1st%20generation)%20with%20these%20iPad,iPad%20(10th%20generation)* I have a mini in addition to my pro and I like drawing on it. It feels like a sketchbook.
Hey Chris! I recently started using AF and love it. Unfortunately I'm having an issue with Vector Trimming. For some reason, the previous vector paths that I've made are no longer trim-able. Now when I try to trim it, it removed all the paths that are touching each other (95% of my artwork). What really trumps me is that vector trimming works just as its supposed to with new paths that I lay down. This issue has really interrupted the workflow I was enjoying with Fresco. Would you happen to know anything that I'm experiencing? Theres nothing I can find searching online.
This can happen if you’ve filled in a part of it with the paint bucket… it does something to the path / shape to make the trimming no longer work. Could that be a possibility?
@@chris-piascik omg!! you’re right, now that I recall it did stop working right after I used the bucket tool on my shape. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge! This was driving me crazy and nobody mentioned that this was a possibility. Again thank you 🙏🏼
Wait a minute.... are you saying that everything you do is automatically recorded and can be played as a timelapse? If so, can the timelapse video be saved on the computer so we can post it on social media/youtube .. and also, can you tweak how fast/slow the timelapse plays?
Yes!!
Hello, in Fresco, can we set individual start times for each moving object? For example, if I have two objects in motion, I would like the second one to start moving after the first one stops.
Unfortunately not, but you can sometimes get around it by adding in blank frames at the beginning of a sequence you want to delay.
ok got it, thank you for your reply@@chris-piascik
As someone who is getting back into design, and now with an iPad (welcome to 2010!), do I bother learning Procreate or just go to Fresco? It seems like Illustrator but without the math.
Well Fresco does both pixel and vector, that’s one of my favorite parts. This video explains my feelings on Fresco vs procreate and may help you decide. They’re both great, and mostly do the same things.
@@chris-piascik My plan is to draw for vinyl and laser cutouts which means vector graphics wherever I can. We also want to make stickers and shirt designs which we can print and cut out afterward, so there will likely be some rasterized drawings as well, but if I'm working mostly in vector graphics, it may make sense to work with Fresco then. My wife is taking a course on Udemy on Procreate ($18 ftw) and I'm considering a course from either there or Skillshare.
Thanks for replying. I've been loving your content as we prepare for something new!
Which retrosupplyco brush set is the your classic inker from? Standard pens?

Do u have a tutorial on how to make brushes or fonts?
I do have a couple for fonts. But I haven’t really done much brush making.
Why would one work in vector and what was it? Rastor?
Edit : as i am watching this, it looks almost like pro create but almost better in a way?... im kinda thinking about switching I am always bothered by the "pixel-y" lines in procreate.

I really like this demonstration video!! truly amazing! But I just can’t seem to merge my layers. Whenever I do animation it won’t let me for some reason? I think it only works with drawing but I don’t want to believe that. Can you do a video on this if you’re available?
Thank you! You can merge layers because it would flatten the animation, but you can group them! Just drag your animation layer onto the other one you want to combine it with. Then you’ll be able to move and transform them all together.
@@chris-piascik I’m sorry if you won’t be able to, but I tried that already and it made my animation have a few problems.. I really would like a video about the merging process for animation on fresco, but if you can’t, that’s fine I was just a little desperate at the time I really want to finish some animation on there..
Hmm, What are you trying to do?
@@chris-piascik i’m trying to copy and paste one of my characters eyes right? But then when I paste that one eye it becomes another layer but the problem is that I can’t merge that other eye down to the right eye so it can be easier for me to only edit the eyes only.. but together in unison.. you get what I’m saying? Like apps like FlipaClip allows you to copy and paste onto different layers but you’re able to merge the two layers down and only edit the two eyes at the same time.. but I can’t do that on Adobe Fresco I have to group them but when I do group them they’re still separate and I can’t even edit them the same way I can like on FlipaClip, etc… I don’t know this is my first time using fresco for its animation.. and I guess I’m just a little frustrated that it’s not something that I’m used to..
@@chris-piascik by the way, reload your TH-cam, because there was a lot of typos in the comment I just posted I just edit it for you so you can reread it.
there must be a bug my brushes keep vanishing, feel so frustrating theres always an obstacle somewhere :(
is the premium plan worth it? or can we survive just for free plan
I don’t have any experience with the free plan since I already have Adobe Creative Cloud so Fresco gets included with that. From what I hear, the free version has less creative cloud storage and you’re limited to 200 brushes. I *think* that’s it. One thing I’d note is that although it still says 9.99 per month in a lot of places online, the premium version of just Fresco is only 9.99 per year. I think the monthly plan comes with Photoshop and that one is 9.99 a month.
I cand export png sequance of my animation in AF ? why? allso can i huse vectors sketch in Adobe Ilustratro from Fresco ? thanks
You can export a png sequence, I do it all the time, just choose motion export and pick png as the format. You can send your vector art in Fresco to Illustrator on the iPad or desktop.
You never know how stupid your audience is, so you bedda not gonna tell them to leave, if they want….made my day!!!!!!😂❤
Lol
As a barber, is there anyway I can do designs on imported portraits instead of drawing on the picture with pencil? I want it to look as real as possible to I can suggest a certain design for my clients
I think I’m confused about what you’re looking to do. You can bring the photo into Fresco and then draw on it easily, but that’s not what you want?
Hello Chris, I'm want to start with digital illustration, I have this question: What tablet and software would you recommend me?
I’m a huge fan of the iPad. I know they can be pricey, but they’ve been very capable for a long time so it easy to get refurbished previous models for an affordable price. For example, I still work professionally on an iPad Pro from 2021. The recent iPad Airs with the M1 chip are also a very viable option. I think Fresco is a great option because you can use it for free as you learn and if you decide you want to import your own brushes down the road you can upgrade to the full version for 9.99 per year.
@@chris-piascik Hi Chris, thanks for your advice, I was reading about M1 chip and is a powerful 8-core CPU. Cool. I'm checking Fresco too. I know vector and bitmap software, Why Do you like Fresco?
