REPAIRING AN EARLY ZENITH RADIO

- This session we will restore a very early Zenith radio from the 1920's. It is in bad condition with many missing parts and some damage. Later versions of this same radio are different inside so this may be an early prototype from the looks of it. Quite a collectible piece of Zenith history!

Is there anything you're not able to fix? Every aspect of your restoration is admirable, and your ability to reverse engineer both the circuit and cam...outstanding! I must say, I felt your frustration with "Every damn one of them is fkd!" ...genius! Thanks for your great videos.
Total respect for your wide range of skills, but turning a box full of smashed and broken parts into a working set is beyond belief...seems impossible. Your experience, knowledge, and analytical ability is inspiring.

A tip I use to stop things sticking on screw tops is I smear a very thin coat of Vaseline on the thread. Works well even on screw tops of super glue.

I've been enjoying your videos for some time, remembering old radios we had when I was a kid. My only disappointment is that, whenever you turn one on, I still expect to hear a program from the 1940s or 50s.
You can buy an am transmitter with Bluetooth and send old recordings from iPhone music to it.

I love how you make everything, no matter how complicated - just look so easy and simple to fix ! I think your cat heard you talking about food and came by to get her DeMille close up and some food !
Reminds me of a similar Radio we had in our house 50 to 55 years back. The box top cover could be opened to replace tuning coils on octal plugs to change band. They were not not hetrodyne. So two separate tuning capacitors were there that can be adjusted by a 10:1 friction knobs. We kept a notebook indicating selected band coil numbers, number dial setting on the two tuning capacitors and station names.The speaker did not have permanent magnet, instead used a electro magnet coil which doubled as the DC supply choke. The power supply was in another box wired through a octal plug to the radio. The antenna was vert long, around 30-40 feet running up high through the house garden. You made me remember my young days. Thank you very much.

That was the most entertaining and enlightening video I have seen on TH-cam in a very long time. When you were tuning in stations you looked like a kid playing with a rocket ship. You have all the cool toys and the knowledge to use them. Molding your own knobs! Bravo! You are incredibly talented.

I found a photo of this radio in the book "Radio Manufactures of the 1920's" Vol 3 page 255. It's shown as a model 4R(early) November 1923 $85

This is great. I will be restoring an old homebuilt square-wire radio soon. half the parts are hand-made from wood or bakealite.

Thank you Ron for your master class standard fiddling. Your method of fixing ancient things, what people don't know is how much study you do to find out what to do. I hope ya'll are being keytonic in your nutrition standards to keep alzheimers at bay. Not saying in any way ya'll are showing signs of it. But I have noticed over the years a slight memory slightening. I only say this because your hands show you are approximately my age and I have been taking mct oil, as well as k2 mk7 and nac to keep my mental functions as well as possible. Carbs effect many people adversely in older age and I was no different and have had to alter my eating habits. Water fasting has dropped my weight by 30 lbs and now I become actually hungry which for many year until my memory went astray did I pay any attention to. Now with fasting and mct oil my memory seems much better.
I'm with you on the keto. I also use the fish oil and mct oil. (plus all the vitamins) Got to keep this old clunker body going for another 20 or 30 years yet! Don't forget your exercise, daily!

This video shows how fascinating the process of restoring back to life a vintage radio can be. By the way, the epoxy casting of the knobs and its great results got me into starting to make my own "clones" from old and hard to find knobs! Silicone and resine are quite cheap around here, which helps a lot!
