In 1973 I spent 9 months at DLIWC in Monterey to learn Russian....after language school, followed by another classified course at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo TX, I scored a tour first at an isolated site on the German/Czech border and then the unit moved to Augsburg...I even met my future wife there who was also an AF linguist. Married over 40 years. The Air Force was the catalyst to everything good in my life. :)

That is the exact path I want to take now, I qualified with my ASVAB score of 98, scheduled to take the DLAB within the next week. I would like to go to DLI to learn Russian (fingers crossed I get the limited slot). I’ve already been learning Russian before I decided to enlist, after I swore in at meps my recruiter told me I could have an opportunity for this afsc.

@@Sweetbunniez I’d say it’s more weird than hard. The time limit and the fact that the audio can only be played once are what makes it kinda hard. But if U’re well prepared u’ll be good. I'm a linguist at heart. In my free time I've been learning mandarin and Russian. But I want to learn Mandarin or Russian fluently and that's why this kind of job is so alluring. But I'm scared about the job outlook. What comes after the air force? Do they at least offer translation certification so that you're not in limbo and are employable after your contract ends ? Because I'd actually enjoy learning one language after the other my whole life. But since their cutoff age is 39.... Idk. Are there jobs out there for ex cryptolinguists?

j.m There’s a chance. You would have to become a permanent resident first(get your green card). Some recruiters may discourage you because your chances are lower than born-citizens. That’s if you are an airman. If you want to be an officer, you’d have to be a born citizen. There’s a chance of getting a waiver, but it’s unlikely. If you want to be an airman, I say give it a shot! As long as you get our residency, you should try!
