Hearing two grown men discuss a children's book that I saw many a time in my mother's classroom on a magic podcast is the type of content that I come here for.
The reason people were made about War of the Spark Mythic Edition is WOTC sold them through ebay and oversold their allotment so many people thought they paid for a box only to have a cancellation afterwards. WOTC apologized by sending uncut foil WAR rare mythic sheet to those that were cancelled.
Y’all missed Triskelavus from Time Spiral, which was a reference to both Triskelion and Tetravus, with there also being a few Vus-es over the years (Pentavus, Hexavus etc.)
I like the flavor of the Vesuvan Dopplegangers versus Clone. A clone, after all, is just a copy of another creature. Exactly the same in every way. The Dopplegangers, though, are always Dopplegangers in some sense. They might look and act like the creature they're mimicking, but they're still themselves, so having them retain their own color makes sense from a flavor perspective.
I'm glad I have Graham's approval for how I interact with LRR content. I must have listened to the first 15 minutes of every episode of Road Quest at least 50 times.
It looks like the "off-template" specters are "Specter of the Fens" from Strixhaven, which has an activated ability to drain 2 life from target opponent and Dread Specter from Mirage, which has a triggered ability to destroy creatures it blocks or was blocked by. Neither of these specter involve hand interaction.
Fun fact about Strength of Lunacy: Not only does it have the Madness ability - it was also part of Torment's Insanity theme deck. A perfect storm of crazy if you will.
All this talk of Tooth & Nail, Triskelion, and Onslaught block shenanigans hits me right in the nostalgia. Avatar cycle talk also reminded me of good old casual magic where my friend would turn 1 Dark Ritual, Entomb, Reanimate Avatar of Woe. A more innocent time!
Wheeler perfectly describes this show at 1:58 in a Dragon Ball Z comparison, and I’ve never been more sure I made the right call clicking on a TH-cam video.
The whole War of the Spark mythic edition caused problems that ended up with them sending those uncut sheets to people wasn’t it? Then some people got toothbrushes, some people tried to get them framed, one guy posted how the company framed the foil sheet…glued face down.
Golgari Germination is one of those "goes infinite with a ham sandwich", but has like no comboes on EDHrec. My first thought was Gravecrawler + GG + Phyrexian Altar + any other zombie = infinite mana and infinite saprolings. Bladewing's Thrall + a creature type changer like Maskwood Nexus or Xenograft + GG + Any free sac outlet = Infinite enters, dies, and sac payoffs. Life and Limb + Bloodghast + GG + Any free sac outlet = Infinite saprolings/lands, infinite enters, dies, and sac payoffs. Basically anything involving Sword of the Meek. There's probably like a dozen more combos that can use GG as its glue.
A random thought: Avatar of Might could be surprisingly easy to play as part of a deck making heavy use of Gift mechanics. You use a bunch of stuff to Give A Tapped Fish or similar token creature, rack up the required creatures with cards you wanted to cast *anyway*, then drop the 8/8 with Trample
After seeing Doppelganger I found myself wishing y'all covered classic L5R because I want to hear the crew pick apart what "that samurai must not do what he was about to do" means as rules text
Specters have a place in my heart (with Drakes)... I have a Foil Doomsday Specter... I think from the very first Magic booster I bought... or just one of the constructed decks of the Invasion Block
The statement about more time between sets and pay the designers more. 10/10, number one reason I worry about the cascading quantity of content being released.
Don't be sleeping on Tezz Master of the Bridge.. I use him for my main historic brawl deck and it does more than you'd think... rocks to get him out early and then just start dumping ornithopters, memnites, foundry inspectors, tokens, frogmites, thought monitor, etc for free or nearly free... I've ended many games in the turn he comes out simply due to his +2 drain
Update from the future: So it turns out Nadu *was* a woopsie-doodle of "Eh, Commander folks said our original version that let you cast things with flash would cause problems, so here's a last minute change we didn't playtest," situation.
I hmave far too many stories of me sitting on a 1 mana protection spell in hand and no mana, and an opponent targets Nadu with a removal spell that flips a land that turns on my protection
Strength of Lunacy is great in the Anje madness deck. I mean, it has madness, so I get to cycle it for free... and madness of 1 means I can enchant Anje in response to a Swords or something. Anje's such a good commander design, basically giving a new life to these old madness cards that wouldn't see play anywhere else.
I almost feel like Nadu has to be on purpose because like... the MOMENT it got spoiled, people saw it and knew. I think the actual thing that probably guided design decisions on Nadu was that they were trying to design a card that is so good that it'd make people stop playing Fury, and then by the time MH3 was going to the printing presses, Fury got the banhammer. 4 toughness is enough to where your opponent has to 3 for 1 themselves to fury and point all the damage at Nadu. "only triggers twice each turn" specifically feels like a line of text added as a result of how scam tends to do the thing and thus makes it extra bad to spread your fury damage around. Risen Reef was a thing that saw a lot of play, so they stapled on that text box, but also, yeah... the lands coming in Untapped is like... the one point where it might not have been intentional. Like... maybe the lands coming in untapped was meant to be a way to give further counterplay Vs. Scam, but at the same time, like... they didn't want Nadu to be just a sideboard card, which is why you can also trigger it, and it's too much.
Funny enough, I don't think people knew when it was spoiled, just because it's even better than everyone assumed. Some new absurd interaction kept coming up, like, every day after the set was released. Like "What do you mean it activates on the enemy spells too? What do you mean they enter untapped?" Fun stuff all around, basically.
My thoughts on Nadu come down to a comparison to Risen Reef. Same CMC. +2/+3 and flying, and instead of a creature type synergy, it's a ward effect on every creature you control. More than a little bit bananas.
in my personal completely unverified conception of reality, someone realized nadu was awful to play with and changed it from once a turn to twice a turn so that wotc would be forced to ban it
Thank you Wheeler for saying something I haven't heard in discussing Nadu - "embarrassing". Everyone knows it's busted, everyone agrees it should be banned (except the higher ups at WOTC who want to sell MH3 packs). But I haven't heard anyone else call it "embarrassing", and that is what it is. It's an embarrassment to R&D. Pay your godsdamned designers more and give them more time between sets WOTC.

I love that we’re discussing the plot points of Are You My Mother not even 10 minutes into the video. Peak content!
Y’all missed Triskelavus from Time Spiral, which was a reference to both Triskelion and Tetravus, with there also being a few Vus-es over the years (Pentavus, Hexavus etc.)
These are always a good time. 5/5 will fall asleep.
audibly cheered at the mention of goku and piccolo driving, happy to be here for the filling
Love how these episodes introduce me to cards I have never seen
"That guy" fantastic shade from Wheeler towards his Podcast CoHost
More scryfall roulette!!

Loved the Winds cycle. Denying Wind was always a fun time. For me.

There's also Specter of Mortality, from WOE, which can exile stuff from your bin to give the board -1/-1 for each one you exile.
Fun fact about Strength of Lunacy: Not only does it have the Madness ability - it was also part of Torment's Insanity theme deck. A perfect storm of crazy if you will.
11:15 Yes hello that is me. I have definitely put on repeats of TTC and North 100 (among other things) as listening material when I go to bed.
I'm forever chasing that childhood joy of a turn one Swamp, Dark Ritual, Hypnotic Specter.
Benjamin Wheeler: I dunno, I'm not a whale
Also Benjamin Wheeler: Yeah so I bought a lot of Beta over COVID
I thought I was the only one who remembered "Are you my mother?" and I expected you to say "You are not my mother, you are a snort."
Man, I'm just catching strays left and right this episode 😂
All this talk of Tooth & Nail, Triskelion, and Onslaught block shenanigans hits me right in the nostalgia. Avatar cycle talk also reminded me of good old casual magic where my friend would turn 1 Dark Ritual, Entomb, Reanimate Avatar of Woe. A more innocent time!
Aww, this is fun. Nice to see you all.
Wheeler perfectly describes this show at 1:58 in a Dragon Ball Z comparison, and I’ve never been more sure I made the right call clicking on a TH-cam video.
42:00 Avatar of Woe was also a feature player in early Commander. I would run into it weekly back in the day
Delightful as always!
Loving Specter Roulette
Omg the Are You My Mother references made my life. What a wonderful book.
Ooh, Avatar of Hope, cracked one of those back when I first got into Magic.
11:20 I feel called out by this, except its usually the Canlander playlist I do it to.
The whole War of the Spark mythic edition caused problems that ended up with them sending those uncut sheets to people wasn’t it?
Then some people got toothbrushes, some people tried to get them framed, one guy posted how the company framed the foil sheet…glued face down.
11:28 HEY, you! I make it to AT LEAST the twenty-minute mark.
Trivia: All of the Avatar creatures are illustrated by rk post.
Nelly calling me out since scryfall roulette and stump the experts are some of my favorite “fall asleep listening to”s.
I looove Scryfall Roulette! If you did one of these a month, I would be so ecstatic 🎉

As someone who regularly throws on TTC to chill out to, Nelly makes me feel seen
Hey I'm one of the future viewers Nelly was talking about. We now have a new Spectre - Commander Shepard from the Mass Effect Universes Beyond
Favorite specter: Sedraxis Specter. The unearth is so good
Oh man, the Specter segment really makes me miss my Specter typal deck
The statement about more time between sets and pay the designers more. 10/10, number one reason I worry about the cascading quantity of content being released.
true randomness is wild
Gonna be buying Serrated Biskelion for my Mikaeus, the Unhallowed deck.
Just finished EDSC, great timing LRR
Looking forward to Tetraskelion printing
tiktok clip of jon lovitz mocking bill burr to his face about his comic ways; Ben you are a comedian thank you xoxo
Most importantly, Tezzeret seeks amulet of vigor in Patron of the Moon commander.
I'd argue about the "most" part in this statement.
Wow. Just all high-profile cards this time. :)
After printing Vesuvan Doppelganger in Beta, they finally made a 4 mana clone with Clone. In Beta.
I love the Luxury Suite.
Don't be sleeping on Tezz Master of the Bridge.. New Bottom idea: "Each?!"
Wow boy do I love the episode of dbz when they take driving lessons
Don't know what it says about me that I look forward to the "filler episode" the most but I don't care!
Update from the future: So it turns out Nadu *was* a woopsie-doodle of "Eh, Commander folks said our original version that let you cast things with flash would cause problems, so here's a last minute change we didn't playtest," situation.
6:39 spoilers for Are You My Mother
so glad there's a bi skelion
I hmave far too many stories of me sitting on a 1 mana protection spell in hand and no mana, and an opponent targets Nadu with a removal spell that flips a land that turns on my protection
Do Commander or acorn cards appear from the Random button? I never see them.
i've decided on pronouncing tezzeret like cesare
The problem with Mythic Edition was it was only acceptable in North America. No-one else could buy it
It me, the Bi Skellion
11:15 good evening nelly
11:20 I feel seen by Nelly

It’s 100% on purpose. They knew. This is FIRE design and non standard sets.

Nelly sees me ;-;
Lots of Madness cards have little to do with Insanity. Basking Rootwalla and Arrogant Wurm in the same set come to mind.
My thoughts on Nadu come down to a comparison to Risen Reef. Same CMC. +2/+3 and flying, and instead of a creature type synergy, it's a ward effect on every creature you control. More than a little bit bananas.
That is an uncommon, and in a Standard Core set, not a Rare in a straight to Modern, supplemental set.
chilling at the sulphureous springs with a hot tub demon reminds me of a certain DnD Beyond session, if you know you know
Tezzeret looking fuckin snatched with the waist cincher 👀🥵
in my personal completely unverified conception of reality, someone realized nadu was awful to play with and changed it from once a turn to twice a turn so that wotc would be forced to ban it
FIRST. NEVER GOT TO DO IT BEFORE
Happy for you bröther
Have to agree with wheeler that no the list does not count. He should’ve tackled James.

Which higher ups specifically said it shouldn't be banned?
