Yuzuru’s fan here and nobody is gonna hate you : )) mad respect for Artur to train the 4A over the years without being loud about it at all. Yuzuru was injured so bad right before the free skate so we didn’t know how he’d do if his ankle was good. Hope they both can safely land it in the near future
Thanks for this breakdown wow❤️ Even if Yuzuru doesn’t land it first, it will not erase for me the mad respect I have for him for opening the gates alongside Artur (first one to attempt it). The difference for me is that Yuzuru has been pushing the sport (first 4lo) while also being a competitive skater at the top for so many years, delivering insane programs. It seems very risky to do that and it also takes a huge toll on your body (and his poor ankle). Very inspiring
Ok before reading all the other comments, when I watched it “live” I knew it was somewhat under-rotated because of the way he fell. As an (old) competitive skater, I remember slipping off the back of my blade, which usually meant I was under-rotating my 2A. However, Yuzuru is the king of saves! Before seeing your slo-mo video, I thought was just barely 3/4 under-rotated at the most, but after watching your slow-mo video, it looks like he’s “landing” a bit more than 3/4 under-rotation….still just a bit….don’t think it was a at a full 1/2 mark, but I may certainly be wrong. So I really appreciate your video capture AND your whole analysis in general. I agree that he gained more speed in the “simpler” entry, but it was NOT at all like the whole half rink just push push push jump that many skaters do to get that speed and height to make any quad successful (even just one of the same quad, whether it’s in combo or not.) I definitely see the difference in his take off compared to JNats. His speed, height, and tighter rotation is obviously better. I understand where you compare Aturo’s 4A, but I still prefer Yuzuru’s more elegant, if you will, way of gaining speed. He’s gets much better speed in a shorter distance because of the strength in his strokes. He also has no discernible pre-rotation. I’m sure he’s landed it solidly in practice but not consistently. I don’t think anyone has landed it consistently in practice. And this is just my conjecture, but I think he decided to try it knowing that Nathan Chen would win gold if he didn’t land the 4A at these Olympics, yet it seemed like It was a bit of his “swan song”….all in just to attempt it. If he’d played it safe (without the 4A) it wouldn’t have been a challenge to him, no matter his placement. Yuzuru pushed himself rather than pushing just for Gold.
Yuzuru attempting the 4a has nothing to do with Nathan. He talked about wanting to do the 4a since he was at least 9 years old. It's a longtime dream of his. Especially after Pyeongchang, there had been more footage of practices, interviews, or attempts to include it in competition.
@@samchau3476 Agree completely! That’s why I say this was like his “swan song.” He pushed himself….he competed with himself rather than competing against Nathan Chen. You can see this clearly in the friendly exchange with Nathan and other skaters.
Add to that that his Olympics attempt was a lot more rotated that Dimitriev’s at US Nats, I think people were blinded by the fact that US judges only called it under when it was definitely a downgrade
love how yuzu's inspiring all the other skaters to try and attempt the 4A when before him it was named as a "humanly impossible jump", and now watch the points for the 4A get higher as well lol

Yuzu fan here too and no, not angry at all XD Thanks for your analysis! I don't know when the first ratified one will be landed or by whom, but I hope whoever does it, does not sacrifice the program for it. Ten to Chi to was still a mesmerizing masterpiece full of nuanced musicality and showcasing his skating skills. The king of jumps (or jump of the king) deserved it. Honestly, I don't think Yuzu will try it anymore. But, whoever gives birth to 4A-chan, please surround him with an entertaining program worthy of him. Then I'll be happy.
In the interview with CBC, Hanyu commented that if he focuses on 4A alone he might be able to land it but he insisted in having 4A with everything that he considered important for his ideal figure skating which means music, performance and story telling.
I'm sure people have said it but Yuzuru's ankle was busted, like, really busted when he performed this. Thanks for the analysis!! I really enjoyed it 😊
After Malanin's success, it seemed to me the issue was simply height. The difference between them is astounding. Yuzuru is always about all aspects of a jump being correct, including distance. I wondered if maybe the problem with his quad axel has been the desire to achieve distance at the expense of focusing on height? I don't know. All I know is that whenever I see Malanin's 4A, I see all height and zero distance.
Yuzu used the same entrance he went into the A jump at age 9 to jump the 4A in this Olympics. That's the reason why he used a very different entrance compared to JN.
Good analysis. But, I didn't understand why you choose Arthur's attempt? His attempt is also good but obviously his attempt was looked like "YOLO" thing, unlike Yuzu's growing. Also, in slowmo he couldn't opened his leg for the landing, he literally landed two foot. Yuzu's jnats attempt was similar to Arthur's which also two foot. But, I think Yuzuru's Beijing attempt was the best. Because he opened his leg for the landing at the air so I think he was more close to land. Unfortunately, we don't have enough video footage of Arthur's attempt. So I think his attempt has illusion because of the camera perspective. And I remembered his others jumps are also messed up. When you think about that, I don't think Arthur has too much risk. So it doesn't matter to him how he fell on 4a or whether he made the other jumps. Therefore there is a possibility to focus more on 4a . But Yuzuru is someone who thinks in terms of program. Although he tried 4a , he aimed to complete the other elements correctly . Therefore, he had to focus on the program rather than 4a.
I'm a Fanyu who's a little scared of the unreasonable expectations of some loud fans which I hope doesn't affect him. One example is how they cite his almost always successful past attempts to land a new jump in competition as a hopeful indicator for the 4A. The thing is, he's probably landed those jump in practice but never in competition until their debut, whereas he's never done it with the 4A. Mad respect for Artur too for still doing it at 29!
@@joyjoyjoy9451 Sorry, but this is not about USA VS Japan. Yuzuru has a HUGE fan base all over the world….and this doesn’t mean complete retirement necessarily at all. Yuzuru skates for himself and against himself. That’s the true mark of a competitive figure skater. If he decides to retire completely that’s his own decision. He will ALWAYS be a star worldwide. He will always be a star for Japan in particular whether he chooses to compete or not. He will never be forgotten. He’s playful too. So let him play a bit on ice with his friends???? As I said, he competes against himself! Let him decide what he’d LIKE to do.
I admit not being figure skating knowledgable but isnt Artur's 4A landed 2 footed? Isnt a valid jump required to be single foot landing? So why is Arturs 4A considered better? Plus he skated through almost the entire length of the rink to accelerate and his rotation in the air somehow doesn't like the same needle like, elegent rotations as Hanyu's. I dont have the knowledge to explain why but Hanyu's 4A looks so much more beautiful and breathtaking to layman's eyes of mine.
Nah I don't think it's just layman's eyes, it really is breathtaking and it shows how much of a genius Hanyu is. If it was others, they would've done what Artur did, especially that it's a new jump (I mean attempting to ratify).
Thank you for the video! I thank TH-cam for recommending your channel to me! I like your analysis of the jump! Even yuzu was surprised to know his 4A attempt in the olympics was certified in an interview.
His 4A was indeed certified as the first 4A attempt on the score sheet in history which means his score was done based on a valid 4A attempt with deductuon without being downgraded to a 3A like what happened in the 2021 Japan Nationals.
Yuzuru wants to push himself to the limits. The 9 yr. Old boy who dream to lands the perfect 4A. Betting his life to this jump. He even said win or loose he just wants to land the 4A in his entire career. Maybe he wants to put another level of challege to every figure skater to try the 4A. And I think every time that he performed in every competition 4A was always ther e.
Nice analysis, but I can’t see how anyone could prefer Dimitriev’s attempt, especially after this analysis. Rotation wise, Dimitriev’s attempt was downgrade, it was called only under, but that’s because it was US Nats, come on, while Yuzuru’s was basically a q, maybe missing 95º (I don’t understand the people saying it was closer to
Not sure how I can possibly be biased Artur vs. Yuzu like on what basis 😂 (like overall I obviously think Yuzu is a way better skater?) it seems like anyone who says anything even slightly critical of Yuzu gets labeled as insanely biased & against him whereas I think it’s really the other way around lol.
