about symetry, literally everyone is naturally asymetrical. this is why it can be quite uncanny to see perfectly symetrical faces.

Yes! I have a friend who I send my finished artworks to, they aren't an artist they are a pure hypeman. But just the act of saving the piece and pinging it over Discord, means I get to see it in our chat history all small and regular, which helps me see my art in a sort of context. Also sometimes it makes me like the piece more because it looks finished, rather than just sitting on my tablet.

the flip upside down thing is something I did in school when we were learning how to draw well from observation/reference. We were practicing the skill of "draw what you see, not what you think you see". I think it was very helpful in that context, because turning an image into "nonsense" forced me to just look at the actual shapes. From that lesson on I had an easier time drawing from observation and reference.
Flipping upside down to view original works from imagination and such isn't necessary though imo. Horizontal flips for such works are ideal, I've especially found them helpful with portraits. (for those wondering how to do that with physical art, I've used mirrors and also taken photos on my phone to flip digitally)

  • @gallagherwitt

The tip about taking a picture on your phone is great, and not just to spot mistakes. I use my phone A LOT while I'm painting (traditional painter), usually when I'm in "this is terrible and I've gone completely off the rails" mode. Looking at it on the phone gives me some distance, which usually makes me realize it's not as bad as I thought. And it also makes the mistakes jump out. So it almost always shifts my mind from "kill it with fire" to "Oh, I'm on the right track, I just need to fix X, Y, or Z."

I think the biggest problem when it comes to art tips is the fact that they will not always work for everyone. It is important to know that when you are trying out a tip an artist gave you online, it might not work well for you as it did for other artists. When I first started drawing and taking my art professionally, I was told to constantly study, practice, and copy other artists' work so that I can learn. But that didn't work for me at all. Those tips stunted my growth as an artist for a very long time. I hated studying other people's work and I wanted to focus on making my own. During this weird period of my art, I came to the conclusion that I learn best when I'm not studying at all. By that I mean: I learn as I go and learn by observing rather than creating separate studies. So, if a tip isn't working for you, it's okay, we all learn and create art differently.
Edit: sorry my sentences sound like microwaved word salad

im one of those people who draws for excessive amounts of time all at once, and i find flipping vertically to be helpful when I just can't see anything when flipping horizontally. Flipping horizontally is best, but sometimes there's still something wrong with it and i can't quite tell what, and sometimes flipping my drawing upside down helps me realize what's wrong with it! also, it's easier to do traditionally. i don't always have access to a light box or mirror to flip my paper

the best tip for me personally is when i finish one, i dont instantly jump into the next one unless i'm REALLY prepared for it.

One tip I learned in class that I found actually immediately works is that instead of drawing the thing u want to draw, draw what's around it. Or try to draw it upside down. This will help u to not focus on the thing u draw and therefore be more accurate cuz the tunnel vision u get when u focus on an object leads to inaccuracy

I'm late, so someone may have already said it, but a combo method with the grid is good for beginners.
If you start with a sketch without the grid/not minding the grid then make adjustments based on how close or not the object is on the grid to the image you'll get a more natural flow as well as learn how to catch mistakes (such as lengthening or warping). Then you can add detail to the grid areas as needed for the focal point based on how busy that area or square is

3:20 That's from Drawing on The Right Side of The Brain, it's a beginner technique to force people to stop seeing objects as the figures (or symbols) the brain is trained to see (for instance, if you ask a non artist to draw a mouth, there's a high chance they just draw something that looks like the mouth emoji) and to think of them as shapes instead.

I was recommended to flip my drawing vertically, and my photo ref, because I was trying to draw a self portrait and it wasn't looking like me and I couldn't figure out why. 10/10 it helped so much if you're looking to make something look like nonsense to draw the nonsense instead of what you think you see

Hey Sam! I hope ur doing well
Ur new editor is doing great. Can I point out sth though? The edited unsteadiness like in 6:26 feels a little uncomfortable.
I love how so comfortable ur vedios are, I watch them multiple times and this small edit thing kinda makes it not like before. I hope you take that in mind :) love your content!

The girl at about 4 mins in is talking about a technique from a book called Drawing from the Right Side of The Brain. It talks about drawing upside down helps you see just the shapes and not "this is a nose, this is an x". Apparently, when we get caught up in the thing we are drawing, we tend to mess up more.
