One way I actually use that private image function on procreate is if I’m having trouble with finding a pose reference, I’ll use myself but sometimes I just need to trace the shapes to understand the pose more, and if I want to maybe post that time lapse but I don’t want my face in it from the pose photo, the private image really helps! (Idk if this makes any sense lol)
tracing a pose is okay and legal. poses are not copyrighted and no artist in the world can tell you that you "stole a pose", so if tracing helps you, go on and trace the outlines of a pose as much as you want & done let ppl tell you otherwise, cuz imagine ppl sueing eachother over sitting the same way or standing the same way XDD its ridiculous. NOT TO MENTION ALL PRO ARTISTS IN THE COMIC SCENE MOSTLY USE THE 3D POSE IN THE ART PROGRAMMS AND TRACE THE POSES TOO xD
Yeah that would be fine but if it's another artists work and you are tracing without credit and trying to use that feature to hide the fact you are tracing someone else's artwork and make it look like you drew it all on your own then it becomes a problem
@@chickenanddoodles oh yeah I completely understand that I was just saying it’s not all bad and just that I use it for this. I do see that the copying is a problem that it could be used for
As an artist who doesn’t want to show myself online at all and doesn’t even like the way that they look, that private photo thing will be a life saver. Sometimes I just can’t get the references I need so I take them of myself and then I can’t upload that timelapse because I or part of me shows up in the video.
Adding a darker or more saturated line to the outside of your shadow is like my favorite little “art hack” that I’ve been doing for years and I love how it looks, even works with just black and white by bumping up the contrast and helps define those shadow forms, very tasty.
Gaussian blur is my go-to for glow effects. I typically draw the glowing object then make a few duplicates of the layer, set them to smart objects and apply incresing degrees of gaussian blur. I also like to nudge the hue, sat and lightness settings and then set them to a layer mode that looks best, like color dodge.
While the private photo thing definitely can be used for tracing and theft I think it's purpose was probably more to not have ref pics being distracting or potentially flashing as the layer gets turned on and off during timelapses. Which I think is nice
6:32 this part. You know that one game with the colored balls and you have to go through (idk how to explain its an old game) this part reminds me of it
6:23 I’m not the best but I think if you want to step it up a bit you can use triad colours. This is based of my pea brain but I think triad colours are colours that are 3 colours apart from each other on the colour wheel if that makes sense
13:10 this is prob how my art got traced. The person showed the timelapse and my art wasn't there but it was an EXACT copy give or take a few details they added themselves ☠☠☠
Lmao I always do the gradient mapping thing, it’s a life saver. However I just draw different parts (ie skin, hair etc) on their own layers before applying because the selection tool is hard for me to cleanly use so never use it outside of fixing my sketch before going into line art.
“The best complimentary color combo is blue and orange.” I also raise you ~purple and yellow~ combined with blue and orange you get gold and indigo, which is great for shading daylight.
Honestly for me personally the private photo tip is actually rly helpful cus I like to post my art and Timelapses online. However, I sometimes take my own reference photos and I don’t want to show my face which would usually mean that I can’t post the timelapse.. now I can tho! :D
How did I find this video its only been 3 minutes since you've uploaded it... Love your work Sam I'm still currently working on my digital art skills :)
Jingsketch has a procreate brush called edge control that has one hard and one soft edge like the CSP one mentioned in case anyone is looking for something like it. The jingsketch brushes are awesome.

I'm super addicted to that satin part... trying to figure out how to replicate something like that elsewhere (since I have no idea what program they were using, but I imagine that program costs money)
11:45 or... or maybe paint it all to the shadow color, set layer lock then make a light blorb with the airbrush...? am I the only one who thinks thats easier?
The private photo thing in Procreate has been a feature for a while now and it was done specifically for instructional purposes to make the time lapse videos more flawless and require less editing. Yes, some people use it for tracing or hiding their references. One artist I like uses that two eye at a time technique. It just catches me off guard every time because it looks like she is creating some kind of mandala on a separate layer when she does it and she gets it good and detailed before she places and warps them. That tool with the four arrows is called a Move tool, or the Move and Transform tool, which actually originated in 3D modelling software before image editing software. Nice ink Sam!
Can you do a full walkthrough of your art process + how to use procreate please? I’m reaaaally not understanding how to use it and work it. I think you are the perfect person to help me :) keep up the great work sam!
I know my comment is quite late but I'm just seeing your videos for the 1st time and what you described as subsurface scattering is something I think I do in Watercolor... a lot! And I do enjoy it but I think I over do it sometimes. I'd like to know more about this... Thank You for sharing!
3:44 is that the same thing WLOP always does at the beginning of his speedpaintings? I always wondered how he does it - really usefull. I didn't even know I could do that with Procreate
another maybe even better) way to get your lineart from traditional to digital (at least in clip studio paint, idk what other programs have this feature) - scan your lineart and open it in csp - go to edit > convert brightness to opacity now you can even color the lineart!
For the tracing one at the end, it would probably be pretty easy to tell even though it doesn't show up in the end video because MOST of the time digital artists are constantly changing/adjusting proportions because we don't get them right on the first try, so in the playback it might look a bit weird if the person gets the perfect shapes first try unless they're VERY good at what they do... Probably BTW LOVE YOU SAM KEEP UP GOOD WORK
