Fun fact. Burgess Meredith actually HATED smoking. He'd given it up 20 years prior to the role and found the cigarette smoke extremely irritating for his throat, ironically resulting in him developing the iconic "quack quack quack" laugh as a means of hiding the constant coughing.... Actually, this fact's not very fun is it? Just makes you feel sorry for the guy.
My favorite Burgess Meredith "Penguin" moment happened in the 70's. Meredith was co-hosting a series called "Amazing Animals", and one episode featured a small colony of Penguins in the studio. At one point Meredtih told the Penguins to follow him, and he'd "teach them to waddle like the Penguin do..." and he walked out in the penguin walk he'd made famous during the Bataman series, and when the penguins followed him it was priceless!
I actually enjoy the fact that the Penguin had to struggle so much to survive, since it allowed us to get so many different takes on him, and there seems to be something to enjoy in most of them, different as they are. For me, the defining trait for the Penguin is his giant and frail ego. He wants to fit into society... well, high society at any rate... but he also has the need to be notorious. Basically is mantra seems to be "Why can't people just accept me for who I am? Their superior!"
My all-time favorite character of any media!! I related so much to him as a little girl with my relationships with my parents, being picked on in school for being short and having a tic where I'd twitch my head, and I have always had a deep affection for birds. In a way, this character was a "hero" of sorts for me in a sense where you could still be someone significant (whether you're bad or good at heart) no matter your differences. I don't mind the mobster take on Cobblepot as I really love it as most fans do, but I don't mind seeing Penguin as both a criminal mastermind, thief and capable fighter. Out of all the takes on Ozzie, I'd choose Robin Lord Taylor from Gotham as my new favourite. Keep up the good work.

Thank you for devoting such a long video to my favorite Batman villain! I've always loved how his design and theme are so quirky, yet he's legitimately threatening, or at least cunning. Batman Returns' depiction made me love him even more. The "freakish outcast" idea was a really good fit for him.

Awesome video! Really went in depth on penguins growth and change throughout cobblepotts time in comics. I was wondering, could you do a Gotham video? The show is ending soon so I think it's the right time too😂. Gotham's version of him is my favorite.
The Penguin in the Arkham Games is imo the best version, but I love Burton's creative take. The only issue I have with it is that after the initial scene with Max Schreck, he loses his intellectual threat and becomes Shrecks pawn. A tension between Penguin and Shreck would have made the character seem stronger.
14:30 I personally hate both villains of Batman Returns due to their being portrayed as crazy, as Catwoman and Penguin are suppose to be the most sane of the Rogues Gallery!
I think penguin isn't very popular at the moment because most people don't know who he actually is. There are no mainstream comic accurate depictions of him right now.
As much as I love Batman Returns and Danny DeVito's performance in it, I never cared for the "freak" version of Penguin in anything else. My personal favorite version of Cobblepot is the second Batman TOS version, where he runs the Iceburg Lounge but has the classic personality and look. Batman TOS had the best voice for him too.
I love the joker but tbh the penguin is my favourite batman villain. I grew up on the danny devito and the animated series versions of the penguin and i recently started watching gotham. Robin lord taylor is fantastic but danny devito is still my favourite. I cant wait to see colin Farrells interpretation of the character.
Great rundown as always! For some reason this was the one I wanted to see the most of any of them. What can I say, I just have a soft spot for this character! Lol If you do continue however my gut instinct recommend Mad Hatter given that he’s another classic villain whose popularity has fluctuated significantly including having a phase of mockery like Penguin, Riddler, and even Scarecrow all got to some extent. Because they’re not as “Extreme” as guys like Ra’s al Ghul, Black Mask, Bane, or Hush I guess? Haha But naturally the problem with Hatter would be that he doesn’t have the longest history, especially due to the whole impostor switcheroo with a character you’ve already covered. I mean as far as the golden oldies go there is The Joker and Catwoman I guess, but of course due to pretty much always being popular and front-and-center up to today they probably have been covered more heavily and don’t have as much of a rollercoaster with the fans or publication. Maybe Mr. Freeze or Poison Ivy could be fun. Lol So the last guy I can think would be Hugo Strange. I don’t remember you covering him yet, and he gets dragged out every several years like the cicadas too much to technically classify as forgotten. Eh, whatever the case I trust your judgment! Haha
@Mr. Rogues: Great job on the video! My favorite version of the Penguin is the one from the Batman Arkham games. Also, have you thought about maybe covering the history of some of Spider-man's rogues?
For me, Penguin is n:o 1. Like most versions I'm familiar with a lot (very much including Gotham and Batman Returns), though the one from the animated "The Batman", I don't know... Fun to see "Snow and Ice", which I feel like we must have read the same Swedish translation of. Cheers, thanks for the video!
I would absolutely LOVE a Complete History of Ra's al Ghul. But I kind of doubt Rogues will do it since he has said several times that he doesn't even really like Ra's that much.
Most of the time wherever the joker appears the penguin is bound to arrive there eventually I’m really happy about that as he’s one of my favorite Batman villains alongside scarecrow and clayface
His brief presence in Beware the Batman intrigued me. Yeah, it was just a small cameo and some references, but Beware liked to foreshadow upcoming characters like that. So, maybe they had plans for Oswald in the second season they never got to make.
Please continue these series. Catwoman is certainly one to consider. Ivy another. It's not like you're doing egg head, false face. Louie lilac, tut, and clock king. Catwoman, bane, ivy, are 3 to consider
dixons version is my favorite i think him being the kingpin of Gothams underworld works so well and the batman Arkham games adopted this version to and he's one of my favorite villains in the game series
Really enjoy the “Complete History of...” videos. They are long though, and video portion to detailed... can’t podcast it. If you break Complete History videos into multi-episode series with a summary at the end, it may work better.
In the comics Penguin looked like a Comedy character for a while. But its actually a good irony. He looks more bizarre than most of Batman's villains. But he is actually one of Batman's most ordinary enemies. He wasn't dumped into a vat of acid like the joker. He isn't an Eco-terrorist like Poison Ivy. He was bullied as a child and became a gangster to make money and take revenge on the world. He shows that something can look fancy but still be utterly common and pedestrian. But the irony also goes the other way. If The Batman who Laughs is telling the truth, then he is the last rogue to fall to Batman in most universes. He looks silly. But he is actually Batman's most recalcitrant enemy.
There’s an upcoming Batman mini-series coming out featuring Catwoman, the Penguin, and the one and only great and intelligent Riddler teaming up to pull off the greatest heist in history. I can’t remember what the name of series is. I think you would like “The Joker Presents: A Puzzle Box”. It’s a mystery involving multiple rogues including the Penguin, Two-Face, Black Mask, the amazing Riddler (who is a focus point of the series), the Mad Hatter, Scarecrow (who beats up Bane like it’s nothing in the latest issue, they decided to go with a stupid Bane unfortunately of course this is being told to us through the Joker’s point of view so I’m a little ok with that portrayal), Killer Croc, and many more. It involves Commissioner Gordon and Harvey Bullock investigating the supposed death of the Riddler with the only one at the beginning willing to talk being the Joker, who isn’t the most trustworthy narrator. As the series progress and more rogues are interrogated it is shown that things aren’t what they seem. Featuring the rogues planning something as a subplot while incarcerated at the GCPD.
I always though that Penguin would make a good freelance spy. Selling information to the highest bidder. He could also so have a love/hate relationship with Catwoman.
I think the current #2 is Bane, which is honestly disappointing since he's so new. Every debate over this I read however, always comes down to Bane, Ras al Ghul, and Two-Face. Ras is kind of boring and Two-Face has a TON of untapped potential, so he could probably swing back into #2 once he's written correctly more often. Oh and when they stop saying Bane is smarter than him. His plan was very basic and simple, and the way he finds out his identity was dumb. He's highly intelligent, but there's nothing to say Dent couldn't do what he did if he ever tried.

17:15 -- Probably didn't help that this version looked like an evil Glenn Quagmire :(
Nice video dude
Lol
If you do continue however my gut instinct recommend Mad Hatter given that he’s another classic villain whose popularity has fluctuated significantly including having a phase of mockery like Penguin, Riddler, and even Scarecrow all got to some extent. Because they’re not as “Extreme” as guys like Ra’s al Ghul, Black Mask, Bane, or Hush I guess? Haha
But naturally the problem with Hatter would be that he doesn’t have the longest history, especially due to the whole impostor switcheroo with a character you’ve already covered.
Lol
So the last guy I can think would be Hugo Strange.
Cheers, thanks for the video!
oh robin lord taylor's penguin is the beeeeeeeeeeest
I'm a 90's kid so the Animated series is by far my favorite.
If you do another of these Ras would be fun to learn more about.
I would absolutely LOVE a Complete History of Ra's al Ghul. But I kind of doubt Rogues will do it since he has said several times that he doesn't even really like Ra's that much.
keep this great work, that's just perfect
I actually enjoy these, please make more, Hell I'll help research it.
*THIS*, is a "Best Review"!😉
Of the choices you gave, TAS was the best. Late 80s to mid 90s comics had the best penguin in my opinion, even if they didn't sell as well.
How cool would it have been if Penguin was randomly added to MK11 instead of Joker... Push Penguin, damn it!
Most of the time wherever the joker appears the penguin is bound to arrive there eventually I’m really happy about that as he’s one of my favorite Batman villains alongside scarecrow and clayface
My favorites 1st to last is: Scooby Doo, Lego Batman, The Batman Cartoon, and Batman Returns.
Tas is my favourite penguin.
Penguin is one of my top ten Batman villains!
How I missed those videos. The best rogues videos belongs to the one and only
I think The Batman's version of the Penguin is my favorite. It was also one of the first pieces of Batman media I've ever seen.
His brief presence in Beware the Batman intrigued me. Yeah, it was just a small cameo and some references, but Beware liked to foreshadow upcoming characters like that. So, maybe they had plans for Oswald in the second season they never got to make.
You should do the history of Posion Ivy and the history of Hugo Strange.
Drinking game: take a shot each time Rouges refers to The Penguin by some form of tiltle.
9:18 yes and it was supposed to called the League of evil which would more bat villains but instead they had to call them the legion of doom.
Please continue these series. Catwoman is certainly one to consider. Ivy another. It's not like you're doing egg head, false face. Louie lilac, tut, and clock king. Catwoman, bane, ivy, are 3 to consider
One thing I forgot to mention, with the appearances of people like Sammo Hung, Penguin being able to fight isn't as ludicrous as it seems.
dixons version is my favorite i think him being the kingpin of Gothams underworld works so well and the batman Arkham games adopted this version to and he's one of my favorite villains in the game series
I think the Arkham games version is kind of bland though. They should've kept the gentleman gimmick rather than just making him a generic thug.
Oswald Cobblepot aka PENGUIN is a version of Rudy Guilani Blessings and HUGS! 👑💜
Really enjoy the “Complete History of...” videos. They are long though, and video portion to detailed... can’t podcast it.
If you break Complete History videos into multi-episode series with a summary at the end, it may work better.
I'm hoping he makes another underrated rouge video this year
In the comics Penguin looked like a Comedy character for a while.
I don't like so much penguin because he is only a mafia boss
@@nevermind-9630 you are WRONG, he is an antisocial expert thief who wants to defeat the Batman and be respected by high society
7:18 Look at the Penguins face right here
Well is it too late to say "Happy new year"?
Paul Williams/Batman TAS Pengy FTW. Danny Devito was born to play him, but Tim Burton mucked it up. :(
give us that top 15 pengy story video plz I would love that lol
Haha maybe some day.
My favorite Batman Villain. Tied with Two-Face.
When you feel bad for a villain, thats when you know its a good character.
His trick umbrella fits in with the spy theme, as apparently spies in the past actually used secretly weaponized umbrellas.
Great video on Penguin! You should consider doing Lex Luthor when you have the chance
"aliens, robots, rainbow creatures, giants, dragons, aliens, and *more* aliens.Did I mention aliens? Yeah a whole lot of aliens"👽
*¯\_(ツ)_/¯*
I think the current #2 is Bane, which is honestly disappointing since he's so new. Every debate over this I read however, always comes down to Bane, Ras al Ghul, and Two-Face. Ras is kind of boring and Two-Face has a TON of untapped potential, so he could probably swing back into #2 once he's written correctly more often. Oh and when they stop saying Bane is smarter than him. His plan was very basic and simple, and the way he finds out his identity was dumb. He's highly intelligent, but there's nothing to say Dent couldn't do what he did if he ever tried.
