I'm a Cook Islander! Growing up in the 80s in Porirua WGTN NZL! My mother played this song on the cassette alot at all the kuki parties. Everyone was singing it! Just reminds me of my late mum and all my aunties and uncle's past and few present. Still it brings tears to my eyes and love! When I hear this song. Been awhile since i played this song! But my late mother just came back to me! Still resonates to me and all the kiwis my generation here in Oz! And its October 2024. One of the most Beautiful waiatas from back home! Makes me homesick

I remember this song when I was in my teens, it was the theme song for an emotional time back in the 1980's when the English Government at the time allowed the return of many Maori artefacts which they held in there museums for more than a century. It was held at the Auckland Art Gallery for many months with cues that stretched for many miles and took days to see the return of many lost ancestors. It was called "Tu Tangata" I will never forget it and how special it truly was.

Your comment alone just shows how much Māori culture means to all kiwi. Thanks for sharing that...I was only a young child when this came out, I remember my mother singing this and she's pākeha...

The first time I heard this waiata was on T.V. It was "Te Maori-The Homecoming". The Maori treasures; which had just returned from the U.S.A (Chicago); were welcomed home after their extensive, & very successful tour; including our own country (NZ). I can remember seeing the exhibition in Auckland. Both my late wife; a Nga Puhi, & I; Pakeha; & our two daughters fell head over heels in love with it.

omg..I haven't heard this song since I sang it at school at the age of 12yrs. That was back in 1960. Taught by Mrs Dean Rewiti. I did the welcome and lead of our school group. Though we sang it with the guys, that came in with a chant.. So beautiful. I love your version too Cara. Thank You.
